Two thousand is a big number. Sitting down to write 2000 words can be extremely intimidating, so the first thing you should do is make that number friendlier.

Write 500 words in 4 writing sessions.  

Chop up that big, intimidating number. Start with a goal of 500 words. In one session, with no breaks, write them all. Take a break, then write the next 500. Repeat until you reach at least 2000. 

If you write 650 words in one session, don’t aim for 350 in the next. Let those extra words add up. A few hundred extra words each day will get you to 50k quicker than you could imagine.

I recommend timing your sessions, aiming for 20 minutes each time. The deadline will help you get the words out, With 10 minute breaks between each session, you can reach your 2000 word goal in two hours. Which brings me to the next point: 

Write fast. 

Don’t stop and think about your words. Don’t go back and improve a previous sentence. Save all of your edits for later. Focus on writing as quickly as possible, throwing everything you have at that blank page. This will actually help boost your creativity. Make your brain work so fast, be so focused, that it doesn’t have any space to doubt itself and you’ll be amazed at what you can come up with. 

But don’t worry if you can’t write 500 words in 20 minutes on day one. Writing quickly is a skill and it will take a few days of training. 

Let the words suck.

This is absolutely key if you want a high word count. When you’re writing an entire chapter in a day, you shouldn’t expect the words to be beautiful. You’re not aiming at lyrical prose. You’re mining raw material that you can work into art later.

Letting the words suck can include:

Writing [something happens here] in place of a scene.

Letting yourself use cliches as shorthand.

Dialog that is really exposition.

Long descriptions of things that don’t matter.

Letting your characters ramble until you discover what it is they actually need to say.

As long as there are 2000 words and they relate to your story, they’re exactly what you need. And if you hate having bad words on a page, once you have your 2000 for a day, you can go back and fix all of it. Take all the time you need. Just reach that word count first. 

Tip: if you do edit at the end of each day, make that a separate document from your official NaNo doc. This way, you can trim scenes, descriptions, and dialog without worrying about its effect on your word count. (If you make a scene/description/sentence longer, feel free to include that in your NaNo doc.) 

Don’t know what to write next?

So you’ve written 1200 words, completed a scene, and you have no idea where the story is going next. Here are some things you can do to get those 800 words in anyway:

Go to writeordie.com and FORCE the words out.

If that doesn’t work, reread the scene you’ve just written and see if you’re missing some obvious foreshadowing, some clue as to where the story’s headed. (You can also add a few lines to bulk up your wc.)

If that fails, take a walk and let the fresh air usher a solution to you.

If that fails, skip the next section. Write another scene. Go where the story is waiting for you. Come back to the other scene at a later time.

Helpful tip:

Instead of breaking your writing session into four parts, break it into five. Use your first writing session to sketch out an entire chapter, like an outline, but with bits and pieces of dialog and description. Figure out where you’re headed and a couple of key stops along the way. Knowing what you’re writing towards will make doing the actual, fleshed-out writing much easier and quicker.

It wasn’t until late afternoon that Tamiko-chan was able to leave the contest hall, hat upside down in her hands so that her 80cm bug could at least pretend it was being carried around. The blonde twisted the ribbon around her pinky finger, thinking about Nozomi and her contest potential – Tojo had a natural stage presence, and her eventual battle against Tamiko had made for an interesting clash of auras. Tamiko found herself feeling complacent; it’d been a while since she’d seen some fresh ideas, and the Sinnoh native(?) had supplied just those. It probably came with facing someone who had at least prepared their routine.

  “You did well today,” Tamiko told her Masquerain. “The Blocks must be paying off.”

A chirp was her response.

  “Maybe we should try some Poffins before we go back to Hoenn? They look a bit stodgy and awkward to make… Well, not that that matters to you.”

  “Phoebe, to the stage!”

Tamiko smirked as her Masquerain became airborne, eyeing her opponent and their Pokemon. Did either of them know what it was? Nope –it must have been Sinnoh-native– but it didn’t seem to have a type advantage, so Tamiko-chan’s plan was already off to a great start. She turned her attention towards the referee, already eager to begin, and nodded when asked if her and her foe were ready.

  The referee cleared his throat: “3… 2… 1… BEGIN!”

  “Phoebe, start off with a Sweet Scent and then a Gust!”

Wasting no time, the bug Pokemon flicked its wings back and expelled a sugary pink cloud into the air in front of it, quickly following up with a wave of wind that carried it over to the enemy ‘Mon. The puff streaked across the stage, and Tamiko narrowed her eyes, watching the boy across from her fret at her quick start.

  “Shellos, dodge it!” the other contestant commanded, but the poor thing mustn’t have had any agility stats because it had hardly detached the front of its body from the floor before it was knocked back a good foot of distance. The sticky vapour slung to its slimy skin, lowering its evasion even further; distantly, Tamiko heard a judge complimenting her two-in-one technique, but she tuned them out – it was a simple idea, really. She shouted out her next attack: “Now hit it with a Bubblebeam before it gets up!”

Masquerain nodded, shooting forward to pepper the pink Shellos with a stream of blue balls, deftly dodging when it tried to tried to land a Mud Slap. Tamiko frowned; that could be a problem.

  “Pull back!” the coordinator commanded, watching her opponent carefully as Phoebe soared up and over in a loop formation to return to the safe side of the field. The boy was a bit older than her, but it was obvious that he’d never been in a contest until now, judging by how uncoordinated he was.

  ‘Way to make it look like I’m getting an easy win, geez. The least you could do is at least give me an opportunity to show how good I am.’

  “Shellos, Mud Slap again!”

  “Dodge!”

Masquerain skilfully darted sideways, and Tamiko stepped back to avoid the splash back when the wet dirt collided with the floor. Her nose crinkled in distaste.

  ‘That is the ugliest attack have ever seen,’ she thought, ‘And it doesn’t seem to know much else. Weakkk.’

  “Let’s finish this off Phoebe!” she called “Hit it with another beautiful Gust!”

Even as Tamiko-chan waved cheerfully to the audience after her first round win, she couldn’t help but fume on the inside.

6 months after the Log Out Button was removed, 3 months since the start of Wonder Zone.  

“Young boys and naughty girls, it’s time for my contest debut!” Nozomi shouted as she ran to the stage. After learning what contests were, and doing some research, she decided to take a break from gym battles. She had practiced a lot with her Pokemon and it was time to see if her hard work would bare any fruit.

  Nozomi knew that it would not be easy, so she took her time practicing and mastering her Pokemon’s skills and move set. Not only did she train her Pokemon intensely but she managed to regain some of her spiritual connections. She had also observed many other Pokemon Contests in an attempt to gain knowledge in the battling style. 

Time to showcase my newest Pokemon.

“Go, Lucky, Use Rapid Spin!” 

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* SHORTLY AFTER *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

 Once the Performance Stage had concluded Nozomi waited in the lounge for the results. Everyone’s performance was incredibly good and it was entirely possible for her to have been eliminated. She was inexperienced, uncoordinated and unorganized, however the judges were pleased enough. She managed to get last place and proceeded along with the other 15 contestants. The coordinator who was standing next to Nozomi managed to land a place as well. 

  Once all the positions were known the match-ups were randomized. The player next to her, along with another impressive coordinator were given the first fight. Nozomi was given the last one. 

  Nozomi walked up to the other coordinator and decided to congratulate them.

When Nozomi approached, Tamiko-chan was leaning into a corner of the waiting room, muttering the same four words to herself as she looked up through her eyelashes at the Masquerain perched delicately on her head. At first the girl seemed distracted, but once Nozomi spoke, it became clear that she was just bored. Distant-looking eyes only briefly flicked towards the medium before turning back towards the ceiling, and Tamiko waved a disinterested hand in Nozomi’s direction.

  “S’was only the first round – a piece of cake when you’ve got a player like me and a natural beauty like Phoebe here.” She nodded up towards the Masquerain and pushed herself off the wall. Stretching her arms above her head, she shrugged. “You’re too much of a try-hard, kid; you’ve gotta loosen up if you wanna win.”

And with those words, Tamiko-chan winked playfully at Nozomi and started her journey towards the stage.

  “Keep an eye on that monitor and you might learn some things!”

Features:  (under the cut)

The only people in canon who left their village without becoming a missing nin were Jiraiya and Tsunade. I tried to cover why this happened in this ask. Basically, if your OC happened to suffer some kind of injury that meant that they could no longer function as a ninja then they’d have to retire, and I think they’d be allowed to leave the village to do whatever as long as they could be trusted not to give away any sensitive information. Otherwise they could wind up on some long term mission (maybe infiltration or information gathering) like Jiraiya but they’d have to return to the village at some point.
