The jackalope is a mythical animal of North American folklore (described as a fearsome critter). A jackrabbit with antelope horns, the word jackalope is a portmanteau of jackrabbit and antelope. There are many jackalope taxidermy mounts, including the original which are made with deer antlers!
In the 1930s, Douglas Herrick and his brother, hunters with taxidermy skills, popularized the American jackalope by grafting deer antlers onto a jackrabbit carcass and selling the combination to a local hotel in Douglas, Wyoming. Thereafter, they made and sold many similar jackalopes to a retail outlet in South Dakota, and another taxidermist continues to manufacture the horned rabbits in the 21st century.

References to horned rabbits may originate in sightings of rabbits affected by the Shope papilloma virus, named for Richard E. Shope, M.D., who described it in a scientific journal in 1933. Shope initially examined wild cottontail rabbits that had been shot by hunters in Iowa and later examined wild rabbits from Kansas. They had ânumerous horn-like protuberances on the skin over various parts of their bodies. The animals were referred to popularly as âhornedâ or âwartyâ rabbits.â
Legends about horned rabbits also occur in Asia and Africa as well as Europe, and researchers suspect the changes induced by the virus might underlie at least some of those tales.
Folklorists see the jackalope as one of a group of fabled creatures common to American culture since Colonial days. These appear in tall tales about hodags, giant turtles, Bigfoot, and many other mysterious beasts and in novels like Moby-Dick. The tales lend themselves to comic hoaxing by entrepreneurs who seek attention for their products, their persons, or their towns

Researchers were shocked to find the remains of a baby bird perfectly preserved in a chunk of 99 million-year-old amber, according to a study published Tuesday in Gondwana Research.
The bird, thought to have been just days or weeks old when it was engulfed in tree resin, belonged to a group of birds called enantiornithes, which became extinct 65 million years ago alongside dinosaurs.
Preserved feathers show that the hatchling died during its first feather molt, indicating that it was entombed in amber within the first days or weeks of its life.
Highlights from ScienceDirect Article
We report on the most complete bird preserved encased in Amber uncovered to date, including most of the skull and neck, a partial wing and hindlimb, and soft tissue of the tail, the morphologies of which refer this specimen to the Enantiornithes.
The proportions of the bird and morphology of the plumage indicate a very young individual, adding the mounting data that the Enantiornithes were highly precocial; however, the scarcity of body feathers represents a distinct departure from living precocial birds.
The plumage includes filamentous body feathers that resemble proto-feathers, scutellae with distal bristle-structures, mature remiges, and erupting ornamental rectrices, revealing an unexpected diversity of primitive and derived feather morphotypes present in the plumage of early birds.

The Puerto Rico trench is the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean, and due to its depth, it has not undergone much study in the past 25 years. However, on this recent expedition of its ocean floor, researchers were able to catch a glimpse of some rarely viewed creatures.
With ambient ocean music playing in the background, this video will not only amaze your eyes, but you will somehow get lost in the ocean yourself, even if only for two minutes. The Puerto Rico Trench reaches a maximum depth of 28,373 feet, and every foot of it provides amazing insight on the ecosystems that live beneath the oceanâs tides.
[symple_divider style=âdashedâ margin_top=â20âł margin_bottom=â20âł]
The Puerto Rico Trench is located on the boundary between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The oceanic trench is associated with a complex transition between the Lesser Antilles subduction zone to the south and the major transform fault zone or plate boundary, which extends west between Cuba and Hispaniola through the Cayman Trench to the coast of Central America. The trench is 800 kilometres (497Â mi) long and has a maximum depth of 8,648 metres (28,373Â ft) or 5.373 miles at Milwaukee Deep, which is the deepest point in the Atlantic Ocean and the deepest point not in the Pacific Ocean.
Scientific studies have concluded that an earthquake occurring along this fault zone could generate a significant tsunami. The island of Puerto Rico which lies immediately to the south of the fault zone and the trench, suffered a destructive tsunami soon after the 1918 San FermĂn earthquake.
