The Sandman-

Church Grim- 

I’m afraid that I don’t have a drawing of this creature as there hasn’t been a confirmed visible sightings, just the screech. The Lac Wood Screecher, has been heard in Lac Wood, Quebec, Canada. There isn’t much known about it, just that it produces a loud, almost metallic screech.  The people who have heard it, say the noise causes a painful throbbing in the head, nose bleeds, nausea and some vomiting.  It’s also been said that the creatures hairs and dandruff, when in contact with human skin cause irritation, rash, blistering and peeling. But since the creature hasn’t been seen, I’m unsure whether it is the creatures fur or there is possibly another reason.  So I guess if you venture into Lac Wood, maybe bring earplugs and gloves.  Beware and Wonder the Unknown~

Bunyip-

The Bunyip is a creature sighted originally by Aboriginal Australian’s and they believed it to be an evil spirit. It’s name ‘Bunyip’ means “Devil” or “Evil Spirit” in the Wemba-Wemba language. A spirit that would lure people and livestock to the water so it could feed. The Bunyip has been sighted all over Australia, living in multiple water sources such as swamps, billabongs, creeks, riverbeds and watering holes. This could mean that there is a population of this creature. 

The description of the Bunyip, wasn’t straight forward as it was said to look like various things, from bird-alligator to a snake man with beard. But most seem to agree on it following the line of dog-like face, dark fur, flippers, walrus-like tusks, horse-like tail and duck-like bill. So I drew the Bunyip the best I could.

Black Demon-

The Black Demon is a huge black shark said to be 20-60 feet long and estimated to weight 50-100,000 lbs. Big Boi or Gal. The creature is said to look similar to a Great White shark but with a much larger tail, it’s skin having a very dark pigment, almost completely black in colour.  The Black Demon has been seen of the coast of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula . Sightings of this creature is very rare and there is little to no evidence of this shark even among the sightings and expeditions in search of it.  But there is a theory that this Cryptid is actual just a very large Great White shark with Melanism. Melanism refers to Black pigment, and is basically the increased development of the dark-coloured melanin in the skin. 

Whether it is new, yet old species of shark or just a large Great White, it’ll remain a mystery for now~

The Dover Demon-

This creature was sighted in Dover, Massachusetts by a variety of people but these sights only happened for a short time in the late 70′s. They say the first sighting was by William ‘Bill’ Barlett at 10:32pm, on April 21st, 1977. This was soon followed by several other sightings, a couple of these people sketched out the creature they saw. 

The Dover Demon is said to look like a variation of the ‘grey’ aliens but instead of having grey skin, this creature’s skin was rosy in colour. It has a large head with a stick-like body, it’s eyes either glowing orange or green. The Dover Demon is also said to be bipedal but it was also saw to walking on all fours. 

The creature hasn’t been associated with any UFO but after these initial sightings, the creature hasn’t been seen again.. Well as far as we know. But who knows maybe it was an alien and picked up, or it has learnt to hide better from humanity.

The Devouring Gourd-

In Bantu Folklore, Gourds and Pumpkins have the potential to grow into giant devouring creatures, easily swallowing people and animals. In a Swahili story, it’s suggested that it may have been the reincarnation of an Ogre or a wicked magician.  Here is the story-  ‘According to legend, the Devouring Gourd was discovered by a group of little boys at play. “Look at how big that gourd is getting!” said one of the boys. To their surprise, the gourd responded. “If you pluck me, I’ll pluck you!” it said. The boys ran home and told their mother, who refused to believe them. But their sisters insisted on seeing the large gourd, and when they were taken to it, they said as their brothers had, “Look at how big that gourd is getting!” This time the gourd did not respond, and the girls went home to complain about their brothers being liars. As the gourd was not plucked, it continued to grow. Eventually it became the size of a house, uprooted itself, and went about swallowing everyone in the village. After consuming everyone within reach, it rolled into a lake. Only one woman had survived the gourd’s rampage, and she was pregnant. When her son was born, they lived together in the ruins of the village. When the son got around to asking where his father was, his mother told him “He was swallowed by a gourd, which is now in the lake”. The son decided to avenge his father, and went out to the lake where he could see the gourd’s ears sticking out of the water, and he proceeded to taunt the vegetable. “Gourd, come out!” he yelled. “Gourd, come out!” Annoyed and enraged, the gourd hauled itself out of the lake, but the boy was ready for it, and fired a volley of arrows into it. The tenth arrow killed it, and it died with a roar that could be heard all the way to Vuga. The boy cut it open with a knife, released the villagers unharmed, and went on to become a great leader of his people.’ 

There is much info about the devouring gourd other than these folklores, but I think it’s pretty interesting. 

Akkorokamui-

The Akkorokamui is said to be a gigantic part-human-part-octopus, yet sometimes just a gigantic octopus. The Akkorokamui is around 120 metres and red in colour, a very striking red apparently, ‘likened to the color of the reflection of the setting sun upon water’. This quote is from a book called The Ainu and Their Folklore by John Batchelor. 

This creature is revered by the Ainu and is prominent in Shintoism, where the Akkorokamui is considered a minor Kami, a divine being. The Akkorokamui apparently lurks in Funka bay in Hokkaido, Japan, but this isn’t the only place it has been sighted. 

The Akkorokamui is said to have great healing abilities, with the ability to self-amputate and regenerate limbs. Thus followers believe giving offers to the creature will heal their ailments like disfigurement and broken bones.

The Loch Ness Monster or ‘Nessie’-

The Loch Ness monster or Nessie, is probably one of the most known Cryptid’s apparently having a plethora of sightings dated back all the way from Sixth Century. Though like all cryptid’s has yet to be scientifically proven regardless of the sightings, photographs and even sonar scans.

The first sighting of Nessie or at least a creature similar in the vicinity of Loch Ness, was by an Irish monk called Saint Columba, his story about the creature was written by St. Adamnan’s. We may never know if it was really Nessie but the idea is fascinating regardless. 

The next more known sightings in the 1800s and have continued ever since. Nessie has been described to look like many things, mostly it’s between a big sea serpent, a Plesiosaur and the occasional extinct carnivorous whale. But they all seen to agree of various things, a sleek rubbery, blackish-gray skin and about 20 feet long. As for it’s head most say it looks like a horse yet but others have described it as being more turtle like. It’s apparently has a mane running down it’s neck or small horns, or crests. I like to think that this gives the idea that there is more than one creature, but who knows.

The Mongolian Death Worm-

This cryptid is said to be found in the Gobi Desert and is spoken about is folklore by the Nomads of the Gobi, many believing it exists without seeing it. The Mongolian Death Worms’ native name is Olgoi-Khorkhoi, which is translated to ‘Large Intestine’ due to it’s appearance. Though its said to be a ‘worm’ apparently its more like a snake. But as no one has caught this creature, anything is up for debate. 

The Mongolian Death Worm apparently has the ability to spit out a corrosive yellow saliva to take out it’s prey from afar, they also say it can let out a blast of electricity. 

This creature is also rarely above ground, but said to be most sighted in June and July, though all of this is hear say. There has been a lot of sightings of this creature but no one has managed to officially capture it or get a photograph, this could always change!

The Giant Dragonfish-

The Giant Dragonfish has only been sighted once by a William Beebe in a bathysphere, of the coast of Bermuda in 1932. It practically looks like a giant version of a deep sea Dragonfish. The average size for a Dragonfish is 6.2 inches, but biggest officially found was 15 inches. The Giant Dragonfish was apparently at least 6ft long. 

It had been described of having pale-blue lights on it’s side and 2 vertical tendril’s each tipped with a light. It’s head was also said to be bit bigger than an average Dragonfish in proportioned to it’s body. 

There isn’t much information about this creature but William Beebe has wrote down in finding of his voyage underwater in his book titled, ‘Half Mile Down’.

Edition 1-

The Cactus Cat!

The cactus cat has been sighted in the south corner of the United States, more specifically California, Nevada and New Mexico. The Alien’s lost there cat’s maybe? There isn’t much information about the Cactus cat, most of it’s sightings are back in the nineteenth century by cowboys and pioneers. 

Their appearance is often associated with mountain lion’s or puma’s, with some obvious differences. The Cactus Cat has thorn-like fur, sharp bones coming out of it’s front legs and a branch-like tail. The bones protruding from it’s legs are used to slash out cacti to expose it’s sap.  

They were spotted at night, and was known to produce a unique and apparently haunting ‘wail’, also with the sounds of dry bone’s rubbing together. It’s not a particularly aggressive creature, but it will defend it’s territory. 

A rather fun fact though, The Cactus Cat apparently like fermented juice and can become intoxicated.
