The grand chandelier of the ballroom casted an unyielding spotlight on the polished marble floor and simultaneously right onto epels misery

"Posture, epel! You look like a slouching grotesque! As a student of pomefiore you should already know that one must glide across the floor with the grace of a swan, not stomp about like a startled elephant!”

Vil’s sharp, exasperated voice echoed through the enormous room. He tapped his heel rhythmically against the floor, his arms crossed flawlessly over his chest

In the center of the room epel groaned softly, his shoulders dropping as he tripped over his polished boots for what felt like the hundredth time already (it most definitely was..) If anyone knew him they knew he absolutely hated the waltz as he thought of it as too stiff, too prissy, and totally exhausting especially when he had no desire to do it whatsoever

Personally he’d much rather be doing something else like playing a few matches of spell drive

As he stood there completely excused with his hands on his hips a voice broke suddenly broke through

“Vil? I’d be more than happy to help epel if you’d like” you volunteered from the side as you push off of the plush velvet sofa, making your way onto the main floor

Vil pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling a long and tired sigh that carried the weight of a thousand ruined performances

"Fine. Perhaps a change of partner will shock his system into some semblance of rhythm. I warn you though, if he still looks like a newborn fawn on ice by dinner, I am holding you both responsible."

He glared at the both of you for a moment, with a dramatic pivot, the dorm leader swept out of the room, the heavy oak doors clicking shut behind him

The moment they were alone, epel let out a massive sigh, as he buried his face in his hands. He kicked lightly at the floorboards, muttering under his breath

“I'm just hopeless at this. Back in harveston if ya wanna dance, ya just link arms 'n spin till ya can’t no more! None of this 'one-two-three, point-your-toe' nonsense."

"You're not hopeless, epel” you smiled warmly, carefully stepping into his space, eyes on his

"Vil is just an incredibly intense teacher…I feel as if he forgets that not everyone was born wearing dancing shoes which is totally fine! I’ve had a few years of dancing when I was younger so just.. here, give me your hand”

Epel’s head snapped up to look at you, his face instantly flushed a vibrant shade of crimson. There was a long moment of hesitation on his part as he stared at your open hand, he swallowed nervously before placing his hand in yours. His palms were slightly calloused, a secret testament to his hard work back home

He was so rigid you could feel his heartbeat hammering frantically against his ribs as you pulled him closer, guiding one of his arms around your waist. The honest truth was that epel wasn't just struggling with the dance steps, he was struggling to function entirely. How could he possibly concentrate on his footwork and pacing when the one person he was completely head over heels for was standing this close to him?

"Hey..just breathe” you murmured softly, keeping your voice low and encouraging. "Don't look at your feet. Look at me and I'll guide you..Ready? One, two, three..."

You swayed together, taking slow, deliberate steps. You were equally as nervous as epel if not a little more. You prayed to the great sevens that he wouldn’t notice how sweaty your hand was getting or how your cheeks were dusted a soft rosy pink..For a few uninterrupted minutes it was peaceful. Epel’s tense shoulders slowly dropped and his movements had become a little less jerky as he let you lead him across the floor. He let out a shaky breath, his lavender hair bouncing slightly with each step, he didn’t dare meet your eyes knowing that if he caught a glance at you the same time you did him, he’d surely loose the little bit of rhythm and control he had

"See? You're doing great..once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad and Y’know you’re catching on quick” you praised, beaming up at him, only having to tilt your head up a little bit

Epel looked down at your smile and his brain nearly short circuited. He completely forgot about the music, the steps, and where he was placing his feet. He just looked at the way your eyes glimmered in the chandelier light, how your lips were curled into the smile he always loved to see, it was like time had stopped as he admired you…and then he stepped forward directly onto his own heel

With a startled yelp he pitched backwards, Desperate to keep from dragging you down with him, he twisted his body and somehow managed to catch his balance at the last second. The maneuver resulted in him wrapping both arms securely around you, pulling you flush against his chest as you both came to a sudden, breathless halt in a dip position

The ballroom fell completely silent, the only sounds was his slightly panicked breathing as he held you up with ease

You were mere inches apart breathing the same air, so close you could feel the frantic fluttering rhythm of his heart against yours. Epel's face was so red it rivaled the ripest apple in his family's orchard which was funny due to the fact that you’ve never seen him in such a state

"Gosh dangit! I’m so sorry that wasn’t..I din’t mean ta do that!” he stammered, his southern drawl slipping out entirely in his panic. He didn't let go of you though, his arms were still wrapped securely around you

“I didn't mean to It’s just...I swear my head gets all muddled when I’m around ya”

"Muddled?" you teased softly, making absolutely no move to step away from his embrace (YOU ARE RIGHT WHERE YOU WANNA BEEEE) as your hands rested comfortably against his chest

A moment passes and epel swallows hard, his wide bright blue eyes searching yours frantically as if he was trying to read your intent. He was tired of hiding it, tired of feeling like he was constantly stumbling over his own feelings as much as his feet

"Because..because I like ya” he blurted out, his voice cracking slightly before he forced himself to hold your gaze

"And it’s more than just a friend. You’re just so patient with me, and ya don't treat me like I'm fragile..you treat me like I wanna be treated see me how I wanna be seen..I can't stop thinkin' about ya, and bein' this close to you like this is drivin' me crazy." He squeezed his eyes shut, bracing himself for rejection, hands still firmly holding you though he was willing at any moment to let you go if you wanted

Instead of pulling away, you let out a soft laugh. It wasn’t a mocking laugh to make fun of his confession, no..it was a laugh of affection. Your heart was doing flips in your chest and if you listened closely you’d be able to hear it. "You really are an idiot, epel felmier."

He opened one eye, looking at you nervously, confusion immediately taking over and pushing his fear aside

“Wait..huh?”

"I like you too” you whispered, leaning up to press a gentle and lingering kiss to his overly warm cheek. You felt him shiver, a breathless gasp escaping his lips. The moment you pulled back to look up at him you could see his flushed cheeks deepening in color, the way his pupil dilated as he gazed at you with one open eye

"I volunteered to help because I wanted an excuse to hold your hand and talk to you a little more…so would you like to continue or just stay like this”

Your words were genuine and playful as epel slowly opened both eyes, the anxiety melting away to reveal a shy but blindingly genuine smile. He let out a soft laugh of his own, his grip on your waist tightening just a fraction as he rested his forehead against yours

"I think..”he murmured his voice softened as he spoke

The afternoon sun filters softly through the windows of the pomefiore dorm, casting a warm golden glow over epel’s room. It’s quiet and sweet, a rare yet precious occurrence and the two of you are making the absolute most of it

You’re sprawled out across his neatly made bed, your head resting comfortably on his chest while he has one arm wrapped securely around your waist. With his free hand, he’s holding up a heavy textbook for alchemy though neither of you actually read a single line in the past forty minutes

"Hey I'm just saying”

you murmur while tracing lazy circles on his shirt with your finger absentmindedly,

"if we get caught, I’m telling vil that you held me hostage with that southern charm of yours”

Epel snorts slightly, the vibrations rumbling pleasantly against your cheek, your hand stops to rest on his chest. He drops the textbook onto the mattress with a soft thud and rolls over, now pinning you beneath him with a dramatic and exaggerated scowl

"Oh southern charm huh? Is that what we're callin' it now?“

He buries his face in the crook of your neck, peppering it with rapid kisses until you’re practically breathless and laughing so hard your stomach hurts trying to push his shoulders away

"Epel- HA- please stop! I can't breathe!"

you gasp, your hands moving up to cup his face, chest rising and falling quickly

The moment he feels your hands on his face he relents, propping himself up on his elbows

His periwinkle hair is wonderfully messy, falling in front of his face. The sharp, tough guy persona he tries so hard to maintain has completely melted away. He looked at you with a softness that is reserved strictly for you, melting into your touch as he kept himself propped up on his elbows

"Y’know..you're real pretty when you're laughing n smilin like that”

he mumbles as a genuine rosy blush dusts his cheeks, his eyes gleaming with admiration. There’s a comfortable moment of silence between you both, just soft gazes and smiles meant for only each other. After a few moments he leans down and catches your lips in a proper kiss this time. It’s sweet, slow, and full of warmth

Your eyes flutter shut as your hands moved from his face to his hair, fingers gently tangling in the periwinkle strands. The kiss deepens, sweet and lingering completely locking both of you into your own little world

The sound of the doorknob turning is sharp and quick but it doesn't quite register to either of you until the heavy wooden door swings wide open

"Epel, I have reviewed your posture exercises for the week and I believe we need to-“

Immediately the voice cuts off abruptly, the owner of said voice seemingly not expecting whatever the scene was in front of them

You and epel freeze. It was almost like time had stopped. At an instant epel scrambled backwards so fast he nearly tumbled off the bed, his face turning a shade of crimson that you don’t quite think you’ve seen on him before. Following him you sit up quickly, smoothing down your clothes, trying and failing to look like you were just...studying the ceiling

Standing in the doorway, looking terrifyingly elegant was vil..His arms were crossed, a single perfectly sculpted eyebrow arched so high it practically meets his hairline

“Well.” Vil begins, his voice was smooth and had almost an icy purr to it. “I can see your flexibility training has taken a rather unorthodox turn.”

"DAGNABBIT!” Epel squeaks, his voice cracking slightly as he cleared his throat, panic clear in his face and voice which made you hold back a snicker behind him, eyes still glued to the ceiling

“I mean-vil senpai! I didn’t expect you to just bust in here I.."

Epels drawl depleting as he spoke in that soft refined act he did when speaking to upperclassmen and teachers

"This is my dormitory, epel. I do not 'bust in’ I simply grace rooms with my presence” Vil replies flawlessly, his sharp violet eyes darting from epel’s messy hair to your thoroughly kissed lips that had become a vibrant pink. "And more importantly, I believe I see the prefect of ramshackle on your bed. Care to explain why the magicless supervisor of our campus is currently acting as your blanket?"

Epel opens his mouth and quickly closes it, no words are able to escape his lips, at the mention of you he looks over his shoulder where you are now watching this unfold, a panicked expression paints his face that translates entirely to “please help!”

You only give him an encouraging nod, eyes on his as you offered a reassuring smile while also trying not to giggle at the situation unfolding

Taking a deep breath, Epel stands up as straight as he can. He squares his shoulders and tries to be confident but the bright crimson blush creeping down his neck betrays him. He took a deep breath as vil stood there waiting for an answer, perfectly manicured nails tapping his crossed arms

"Well..they..” he tried to find the words, he knew trying to go around telling vil the truth wouldn’t work as he could read epel like an open book, his slightly trembling hands gripped the hem of his shirt as his heart pounded in the chest, might as well just rip the bandaid off now since he knew he couldn’t explain what he had walked in on in a normal way

“Well..perfect and I are dating and we have been for a while now!”

Epel stood there awkwardly as you scooted to the front of the bed where he was, you stayed seated with only your legs hanging off the bed, a hand gently landed on his lower back to reassure him that it would be okay

Vil doesn't blink or say anything, he just stares at the both of you for a long, agonizing five seconds, the tension so thick in the air you could cut it with knife if you really wanted to

"I am aware.” Vil says simply, there was no anger in his voice which somehow made epel more nervous. He blinks, almost completely deflating at vils reply, his brows furrowing slightly as he just stares at the housewarden in front of him

“You..huh? You know?”

"Epel.” Vil sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose with an air of dramatic exhaustion. "Numerous times I’ve witnessed you wear a ribbon with colors that are distinctively ramshackle colors on your wrist, your posture miraculously improves only when prefect is around, and you always smell faintly of their laundry detergent. Did you truly believe you were being subtle?"

At that you couldn’t help yourself as you burst out laughing, unable to hold it in anymore

“I told you he knew!” You said in between giggles as your hands made their way to your stomach. You had a feeling vil already knew as..well he knew everything that went on with all of the “potato’s” in his dorm, as he would call them

"Hey! You’re really hot helping!" Epel groans as he covers his face with his hands, his ears burn bright red. At the sight vil lets out a soft, almost imperceptible chuckle, his sharp demeanor softening just a fraction. He looks at you, then back to at epel who’s gaze returned to vil

"While I appreciate that the prefect seems to have a grounding effect on your..tendencies, epel. I must remind you that public,, or semi private,, displays of affection must not interfere with your studies.” Vil fixes you both with a stern look. "And please if you are ever visiting ​pomefiore again, perfect lock the door next time. I have no desire to witness the sequel to this…particular scene."

With a dramatic swirl of his purple lined robes, Vil turns on his heel with grace and leaves the room, clicking the door shut behind him

The room is dead silent for a moment before epel groans loudly and collapses back onto the bed right next to you

"Ah'm so teed off ah could spit..that was embarrassin’!” he mumbles into his hands as he stares up at the ceiling, his face and ears still dusted a deep crimson color "how on earth could I not have known vil knew”

You let out a soft chuckle as you lay back, turning so that your head was on his chest, cheek pressed against the fabric of his shirt as you heard his heart pounding in his chest

“C’mon tough guy, you did great and hey at least he knows so now we don’t have to sneak me in to hang out”

Epel turns his head sideways, glancing down at you with a pout, though a small, fond smile is already tugging at the corner of his lips, his eyes gleaming again as he moved one of his hands to rest on your back, the other resting on his stomach

"Yeah yeah. Laugh it up, sugar” he grumbled gently as he began to move his thumb up and down on your back, "But hey now that we’re in the clear you're stayin' here for the rest of the day, just ta’ help me recover from this”

A smile painted your lips as you lifted your head to look at him, admiring his features for a moment,

“And you think I’d complain about that? You’ve got yourself a deal” You said playfully as you leaned in, placing a sweet and quick peck on his cheek

The mirror chamber was suffocatingly quiet. Crowley stood by the mirror which was glowing a faint green and black, his usual theatrical flair replaced by a sharp, final efficiency. Everything was ready. The way home was open after so many months of being in this chaotic world you had stared to grow fond of.

You stared at the swirling vortex, your chest tightening until it hurt to breathe. It wasn’t ever supposed to feel like this. When you first arrived in this world, in that coffin, you would have given anything for this moment..But now? You had a life here.

Your own dorm, a room in ramshackle that smelled like dust and dried flowers, Friends who drove you crazy almost everyday, a sense of belonging you had never felt in your own world

And you had trey

You turned to him, your vision blurring with hot stinging tears. He was standing just a few feet away from you, his hands clenched tightly at his sides. His usual calm and dependable expression was completely fractured in this moment, the corners of his mouth trembling as he tried to force a reassuring smile

It failed miserably which didn’t make you feel any better despite his attempt

"Perfect, you..you have to go.”

Trey whispered just enough for only you to hear him, his voice cracking on the words. He didn't move to hug you or reach out to hold your hand. If he touched you now, he wouldn't be able to let go and you both knew it

"It's your home.”

"But this is my home”

you let out a choked sob. It was funny really, if your past self could hear you now..hear those words that slipped from your lips almost effortlessly they would’ve laughed in your face. You meant it though, the words tearing out of your throat as you gripped the hem of your uniform

“Please, trey..please I want to stay here. I finally feel like I belong I just-“

"Time is up, perfect.”

Crowley urged, his hand resting heavily on your shoulder, guiding you inexorably toward the mirror

“The magic won't hold so please do not waste any more time”

The vacuum of the portal began to pull at your clothes, a cruel and unnatural wind that smelled of nothingness.

You dragged your feet against the stone floor, desperately trying to fight the forward momentum.

You wanted him to be selfish. For the first time since you’d known him, you needed trey to break the rules, to defy the headmage, to grab your wrist and pull you back into the warmth of the heartslabyul kitchen with him as he did so many times before

Instead, he took a step backward. The distance between you stretched, agonizing and permanent. Your heart breaking as you tried to reach out for him, eyes filled with tears

"Don't look at me like that..”

he rasped, his eyes turning glassy behind his glasses. He looked down at his own boots, unable to hold your gaze

“You don’t belong here, perfect..You don’t belong in a world of overblots and magic. You have a real life waiting for you, one your more familiar with..A safe one…go please.”

"I don't care about safe!"

you screamed over the rising hum of the mirror, the sound ripping from your throat as tears tracked hot down your face, adrenaline rushing through your body as you tried so desperately to stop the pull

“I care about you and I love you more than I’ve loved anyone just..tell me to stay, Just say it please, trey!”

He stood there, gaze still on his boots as his eyes welled with tears.He didn't say it, he didn’t say anything as he kept his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles jumped, his knuckles turning white as his hands remained stuck to his sides

He was choosing to be the sensible one, punishing you both with his silence because he thought it was what was best for you. He didn’t want you to leave the world you’d come from behind, he didn’t want to keep you trapped here especially since crowley had kept his promise and found a way to send you back home

"Step forward, Prefect! We don’t have much time!"

Crowley’s grip tightened on your shoulder as he delivered the final unyielding shove backwards

The magical pull caught you entirely, lifting your feet from the ground without fail. You spun backward into the blinding, freezing light of the vortex, the tether completely severing

You looked back over your shoulder at trey one last time, desperate for him to tell you to stay with him, to be with him forever but he didn’t say one word. He just stood there, his eyes reflecting a profound and quiet devastation behind his glasses as he watched the portal pull you in. His heart aching as he watched the love of his life begin to descend into the mirror

He knew you wanted to stay, he wanted, no..he needed you to stay but in the end he knew he couldn’t keep you here with him, you had people back home who cared for you and he didn’t want to just take you away from what you had there

The last thing you saw before a blinding light consumed you was his silhouette turning around and walking away into the darkness of a world you could never return to, leaving you to fall into the abyss of a home you no longer wanted.

The afternoon sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long, dramatic shadows across the cobblestone courtyards of NRC. You and your partner were taking a slow, peaceful stroll, your hands loosely intertwined. Many students had started to retreat to their dorms for the day allowing a peaceful moment in a usually chaotic place.

Up until this point, your relationship with your partner had been blissful, lighthearted, and completely normal,well, as normal as dating someone at an all boys magic academy could be.

Though even though your relationship was going so well and you had a close bond with your partner, there was just one very tiny towering detail you hadn't quite gotten around to mentioning yet

As you rounded the corner near the botanical gardens, the air grew noticeably cooler, carrying a faint, electric hum of ancient magic. Standing surprisingly alone (without a certain loud half fae half human and sleeping beauty guarding him 24/7) near a crumbling stone archway was a tall, imposing figure silhouetted.

Jet black hair, sharp neon green eyes, and unmistakable, obsidian horns.

Malleus draconia the most feared boy in all of twisted wonderland...

Your partner froze instantly, his grip on your hand tightening in sudden panic.

"Oh sevens."

They hissed under their breath, trying to gently pull you back to turn a different direction.

"Stop! Don't make eye contact.. That's malleus draconia. The housewarden of diasomnia. If we disturb him, he might turn us into frogs!"

They whisper yelled as they continued to try and pull you back

You blinked in surprise as you suppressed a smirk, the feeling of laughter creeping up on you as you placed your hand on your partners

"Frogs? He won't turn us into frogs"

"Well you don't know that! You're just a first year in his dorm. You haven't seen what he can do!"

your partner whispered frantically, trying to shield you behind them.

"Just take a step back and we can go a different way!"

Before you could retreat (or even properly explain) the powerful fae turned his head.

His piercing green eyes locked onto the both of you causing a shiver to run down your partners spine For a second just a second, a look of profound, familiar loneliness crossed his face. The look of someone used to people fleeing the moment he appeared.

As his gaze shifted from your partner to you, and then down to your interlocked hands, his expression shifted into something much more intense

"Ah.”

Malleus started, his deep, resonant voice echoing in the quiet courtyard. He glided toward you both, his heavy cape billowing slightly behind him

"It is just you."

Your partner practically trembled, bowing his head slightly.

"Lord Malleus! G-Good evening. We apologize for interrupting your walk, we were just leaving!-"

"There is no need to cower.”

Malleus interrupted smoothly which made your partner grip your hand slightly harder, that caused his eyes remained sharply fixed on your intertwined fingers. He stepped closer, towering over the both of you.

"I was merely observing. However,„I see you are keeping rather close company with a member of my dorm."

"Oh! actually we're dating"

you chimed in, your tone was more relaxed and cheerful than your partners or malleus was

Your partner's soul practically left the their body. They looked at you, mildly horrified.

Their shoe nudged yours as if to say

"Are you trying to get us killed?!"

Malleus tilted his head. His sharp features tightening slightly

"Dating..I see. So this is the individual who has been occupying so much of your free time lately. The one responsible for your absence during our usual evening tea, no?”

He stepped directly into your partner’s personal space without a second thought. He casted a massive shadow over them. The air grew heavy as he stood toe to toe with your partner.

"Well then tell me, human. What are your intentions? Do you possess the capacity to protect what is precious, or do you merely amuse yourself?"

"I..w-well..”

Your partner stammered, totally bewildered as to why one of the most powerful beings in the world was cross examining their love life

"Well I..I care about them a lot, lord malleus! I swear to the sevens I'm a good partner!"

Your partner so desperately trying to defend themself, malleus leaning in a little making your partner tense up even more than they already were

"Malleus, stop it."

You said with a sigh as you stepped out from behind them

"You're scaring them! And stop using your housewarden voice on my partner please.”

They looked between you and malleus, their jaw dropping. How were you not freaking out?!! Why would you talk to malleus like that especially since he’s your housewarden??? You just called the feature king of briar valley by his first name oh so confidently like it was natural

Malleus let out a soft, rumbling huff. The pressure vanishing in an instant, replaced by a slightly dramatic pout.

"You always take their side. It is only natural that I am protective. As your housewarden, it is my duty to oversee the wellbeing of those in diasomnia, and as your older brother, it is my birthright to ensure your suitor is worthy."

The courtyard went dead silent. A stray crow cawed in the distance

Your partner stood completely frozen, their brain visibly trying to process the information. They looked at the horns, the diasomnia armband you wore proudly then, they looked back at malleus

"Brother?"

Your partner whispered in complete and utter shock, trying to comprehend what words just came from his mouth

“Wait..HE’S your brother?!!!”

"Yes."

Malleus replied. Straightforward as he folded his arms gracefully

“Did they not inform you? We share the same royal bloodline. Though they chose to attend this school and were picked as a first year under my supervision."

Your partner slowly turned their head toward you, their eyes wide with a mix of betrayal and sheer mortification

"You...you're a draconia? You're royalty?! Why didn't you tell me?!?!”

They asked as they let go of your hand and placed both hands on your shoulder

"You never asked!"

you said almost a little too calmly, offering an apologetic shrug.

"Besides, whenever people find out they start acting weird and running away. I wanted you to like me for me y’know?”

"I do like you for you!"

your partner squeaked, glancing nervously at malleus, who was still evaluating them with a calculating stare. They let go of your shoulders and put them down to fall to their side

"It's just...your brother can summon lightning storms when he's upset and he’s literally THE malleus draconia might I remind you???”

Malleus allowed a small yet amused smile to grace his lips. The genuine affection you had for each other was obvious and despite his intimidating entrance, he couldn't deny that your partner seemed genuinely devoted to you

"Very well.”

Malleus declared, stepping back and allowing the tension to go away completely

"I shall grant my approval for now, but take heed, human. If you ever break their heart, you will find that a dragon's wrath is not easily appeased."

"Understood! Crystal clear, Lord Malleus!"

Your partner nodded vigorously, their hand still trembling slightly as they searched for your hand to grab onto it with a firm grip almost as if they were trying to calm the nerves still eating at them

"Good.”

Malleus said, looking thoroughly pleased with himself. He turned to you, his expression softening into a warm, familial smile. That wasn’t something anyone had seen besides you

"Do not forget, we have dinner in the lounge tonight. Do not be late.”

He said sternly with a pause before looking your partner up and down

“And,,,you may bring your guest, if they wish to come.”

With an elegant sweep of his cloak, malleus turned and walked away into the distance leaving a trail of faint, green magical sparks in his wake

Your partner let out a breath they looked like they’d been holding for five minutes, leaning against you for support

"Hey, babe? next time we hang out can we just stay in my dorm room? I don't think my heart can take meeting any more of your relatives”

They said nervously as they turned to face you, hands holding onto yours with a gentle grip

You laughed softly and nodded, gently squeezing their hands and leaning in to place a quick peck on the side of their mouth

“Deal.”

The silence in the NRC library was calming, and punctuated only by the soft turning of pages and the distant scratching of pens on paper. It was late, and the towering stacks of ancient books seemed to cast impossibly long shadows across the polished oak tables

You sat close beside him, shoulders touching and surrounded by an absolute fortress of magical textbooks and loose paper. You were staring blankly at a complex enigmics worksheet, your pencil hovering uselessly over a particularly stubborn problem.
