Poppy found herself in her usual spot, surrounded by piles of books that consumed her days and nights. One book in particular caught her attention, one she hadn’t yet read, and it was brimming with information that felt significant. As she devoured its pages, her mind raced with the implications of what she had discovered. She knew, once she had finished, she had to share it—this knowledge could change everything. The potential dangers of what she was learning never even crossed her mind. To her, it was simply knowledge, a chance to feel useful once more, worthy of the title she had long doubted. Since Daxton had told her she was to be the new scholar, Poppy had struggled to feel deserving of such a position. But now, finally, she believed she could fulfill her role as a scholar of the Summer Court, the Scholar Alina had told her she was.
As she turned the last page, a sudden flash of light illuminated the darkened room, brighter than anything she had seen before. When the light faded and her eyes adjusted, she instantly knew where she was. A single word slipped from her lips, “Home,” before she drew her last breath and collapsed to the floor of the throne room with a splash.
( 𐫱 ) 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴. that emits a resolve around the high lady, solid and echoing as an iron shield. she knows when night is falling, one that isn't of their own making, one that shouldn't exist in the first place. it bubbles in the place beneath her throat, like a caged animal trapped beneath a door, scrabbling for the lock and key. “you'd best have something good to ask of me,” comes the stance. nesrin becomes aware with all mornings which pass, the temple bell tolling to announce the turning of the hour, just how much of a slope the courts have found themselves sliding upon. a little bit would result in failure. she would not see night driven back into the caverns and shrouded in mysteries not of their own making. “and no, i will not leave this room to get a drink. not right now,” amends she. recently, she had obtained the reputation of being a joy - killer, but that's what happened when real killers could be lurking in the shadow. / @slivertm ; @ethercvl ; @stxrfclls ; @crxssdhearts ; @liuyan ( muse lotteries )
Kael stumbles forward, his eyes wide with the sudden realization of who stands before him. His breath catches in his throat as he halts just a few paces from the High Lady of the Night Court. His heart races in his chest, pounding against the silence that hangs heavy between them. "I..." Kael stammers, words slipping clumsily from his lips. He swallows hard, trying to muster some semblance of composure. He has no reason to be here, no purpose, no request worthy of her attention. He curses his himself silently, wishing he had traded this evenings patrol with someone else.
Kael winces, the shame burning in his cheeks. "I... I have no request, high lady," he admits, his voice barely more than a whisper. "I didn’t mean to—" He stops himself, realizing there's no excuse he could offer that would matter. He shifts awkwardly on his feet, gaze dropping to the stone floor beneath her boots."I..." He forces himself to speak again, the words trembling in his throat. "I was just... on patrol." It's a weak explanation at best. He knows it sounds foolish. "I... I was not paying close enough attention to where I was going. My apologies." He says to her, lowering his head and hoping that she doesn't know who he is or who his father is. The last thing he wanted to do was bring more attention to that or cause a problem with his mistake for his father.
"i guess you have a lot more going on here." it's not lost on them that the dusk court and the king make the general's life harder. though they had never been involved in the politics of the court they had watched their older brother move into that role flawlessly as he was was raised to do. "you know you can talk to me about things in your life right?" they reassure. "where else would i have been?" they smile sheepishly as they fall into step next to the general. "it's not the same, and they're different horses here of course. however they've allowed me to care for the horses alongside them here. it's the best i can do until we get to return home."
Cillian shrugged. "I mean, yes, but I always have time for you." He told them, his tone caring towards them. He sighed nodding at them. "Of course I know that. But right now there isn't much to tell." He paused before adding, "Except I ran into Erilyn the other day." He shared, not sure exactly why but the words were spoken now and there was no taking them back. "Well, I'm glad you are getting some time with them at least. I know how much it means to you."
Cillian looked around their surroundings for a moment, taking them in."Yeah, I hope its sooner than later. I never realized how much I took our home for granted until now. I actually miss it." He admitted to them.

she runs her tongue along her teeth, debating what would be the smartest move before choosing it. azira had planned to practice today, finally working time in where she wouldn't be watched or one might think she was over-preparing. but the room she favored was taken – and the trainer refused to head to the mass grounds. so she taps her fingers onto her stollen blade, spinning it and fiddling as she thinks until steps pull her attention. " if you were hoping to use this space, it's been taken. " and not by her. assumptions of what they wanted too, this hall also lead outside and there was no telling what the other had come down here for.
Cillian’s boots echoed through the hallway as he approached, his steps deliberate but unhurried. His sharp gaze settled on Azira, catching the flicker of irritation in her movements, the blade spinning between her fingers. He studied her for a moment before speaking, his voice calm but carrying the weight of authority, as it always did.“I wasn’t coming for the space,” he replied, his tone measured, though there was a faint undercurrent of amusement. He took a few more steps closer, eyes flicking to the blade in her hand, then back to her face.
“I was heading to the larger grounds, if you want to join me and see if you can put that blade to good ues.” he added.

( 𐫱 ) 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴? that boredom seeped from their pores. sweat marred the glitter at their temple, painted there from their last performance, but to what end? nothing held persuasion nor interest for them upon this night. granted, they were in a rather foul mood; the applause had not lasted as long as it should have, in their opinion. so it went that they would have to find their attention elsewhere. the approach from the side garnered their reaction: a sharp twist of their chin, an arch of their brow. they scanned the mainlander fae up, and down, and up again, hovering their goblet near their mouth. they really shouldn't frequent establishments like this. what would be thought of them? “yes?” amusement or — something of the sort. they really couldn't say themself. lucius experienced too much, and nothing at once. “are you shocked into silence?” well, it would be appropriate.
Xavier shook his head slowly, a smile playing at the corner of his lips, amusement dancing in his eyes. “It’s just the way the glitter catches the light, bringing out the blue in your eyes,” he said, his voice smooth, effortlessly slipping into that practiced charm. He lifted his glass to his lips, taking a slow drink, his movements deliberate, as if he had all the time in the world. Then he shrugged, a small, gesture to make it seem as though he hadn’t been paying attention at all. “The moment passed,” he added, . He let his gaze linger for a beat longer, allowing the weight of his words to settle.
With that, Xavier turned and headed back toward his table, leaving the other person standing there, likely still processing what had just happened. He didn’t need to look back; he knew the effect he had. His technique, honed over years of careful practice, never failed him. It was almost too easy, really. And yet, despite the simplicity of it all, this particular game was his favorite. There were easier ways, of course, more straightforward methods to get them to follow him, to capture their attention. But this? This was the most challenging, the most entertaining.
VIVIAN had been on a mission. Not for Saint, though. She had had plans of her own, & mulling about the local tavern had proven to be quite beneficial for her - in any case, at least their drinks were good. In all truth, Vivian had not been in greatest of moods lately, with the little kingy getting his power up & the courts almost bursting into flames. & not the fun flames of retribution, but the boring ones of panic.
how tedious.
It was in that found mood that a charming little thing had found her & - wowed at her? The audacity of the fae never ceases to entertain her, but her patience had already been strained enough that she flashed him a murderous gaze, promising pain - & not of the pleasant kind.
"Did you just wow at me?" she purred in a soft, dark tone of voice.
Xavier cocked his head to the side, curious of this one and her response. It wasn't what he was expecting, but she had this dark mystery about her. He shook his head slightly. "No." He said simply reaching up to grab the drink the barkeep had just made for him. "But, I could if you wanted me to." He said with a wink before turning to go back to his table. And truth be told he had said wow to her, about her. It was his lame in line that always seemed to work. He would see if she followed then it did, if she didn't he would find someone else to warm his bed for the night.
"I couldn't possibly," Kavitha insisted, nudging the plate closer to Kael once more. She reached for one of the pieces of bread she'd obtained, tearing off a piece to dip into the soup. "If I tried, I'd be at immediate risk for falling asleep right here and missing the thousand and one meetings I have scheduled for early tomorrow morning." Meetings she actually wanted to attend, in spite of her relative exhaustion. She had had to adjust to a lot since leaving her ancestral family home, but the recent changes to the dusk court made it feel a bit like she was starting anew all over again.
She shook her head, suddenly, faintly apologetic. "But look at me, going on and on about my work. It can't have been easy for you, either, with an influx of new people to both protect and be suspicious of. How have you been faring?"
Kael laughed softly, scratching the back of his neck as he glanced down at the plate she nudged toward him. “Well, if you’re sure...” he murmured, still hesitant but clearly appreciating the offer. He took a small piece of bread, trying not to make too big a deal of it as he dipped it in the soup, as she had done before him.
His gaze flicked up to her briefly, catching the faint smile on her lips as she talked about her work. It made him feel... warm. He hadn’t expected her to care about how he was faring, and the thought made his heart race a little. “It’s not all bad,” he said, his voice quieter than usual, the shy edge sneaking in. “I mean, I’m used to keeping an eye on people.”He cleared his throat, looking away quickly as if embarrassed by what he’d just admitted. “I guess I’ve just been trying to, adjust like you.” His fingers drummed lightly on the table. “But honestly, hearing about your work... it’s nice. I don’t mind listening. It’s impressive, what you’re doing.”
Kael smiled, more to himself than anything, before adding with a playful edge, “Maybe I should be the one asking for advice on how to handle everything.”
INDEED, the bond had been a little... stronger than the one she had shared with cats, but the gist of it was pretty much the same - that had been the truth. Her lips pulled into a friendly smile & she offered the other a light incline of her head. The mainlanders weren't foolish - the fact the other did not press fro more answers, had already won Yanyan's respect.
show respect & it will be repaid.
"Naturally. They are quite a bit larger than cats." She chuckled, a knowing glint shining in her eyes. "I have found the bigger the animal, the stronger the bond." she paused, then asked ;
"Are you enjoying your time in Dusk? I know this had been quite the surprise - & discomfort - for most of you. If there is anything you require, please, to not hesitate to ask." Yanyan offered, then ;
"I don't believe I've introduced myself yet. I'm Liu Yan, the commander of Dusk."
Poppy smiled at the other nodding respectfully. "Oh they are, that is for sure." She agreed with the other. "I wonder if other animals ever bond the same way in other courts. I don't think it is something I thought of in that way before." She mused aloud.
Poppy nodded. "Everyone has been so kind and well accommodating." She sighed softly. "I just miss home. We have been thrust all over the place if feels like with no answers." She shared. Poppy smiled kindly at the other. "Oh, I am Poppy Aelin, Scholar and Scribe from the Summer court." She said introducing herself in kind.
( 𐫱 ) 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗳𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝘁. she shook her finger at him once more in punctuation, then spread her hands. “i'm your only sister. if i wasn't your favourite, we'd be in big trouble." it might mean there was some plot of a secret sibling elsewhere; serena couldn't fathom that kind of drama entering their family unit, which was hard won and worked for. she tutted at him, dismissing his waggling brows. “mhm. not i. even if someone has glanced my way, i've completely missed it. and dad isn't going to approve just anybody.” though her worries boiled over thinking about him. why did he have that faraway expression on his face again? like he was somewhere else entirely? it was an old fear, thinking that he was going to leave them both, for the sake of some duty. surely that couldn't be as deep or important as she and kael now? “have you seen him lately?” asked she casually. both in a shift of the subject and out of curiosity. she otherwise set the box on the table and began to undo the white of the ribbon.
Kael chuckled, shaking his head as he crossed his arms, leaning against the doorframe. “You’ve got a point there. Favorite by default,” he teased, the warmth in his voice evident. “But I suppose it’s a good thing you’re the only one. Don’t think I could handle another sister running around.”
He watched her closely as she spoke about their father, the light humor fading slightly as her tone shifted. His brow furrowed, the faraway look in his eyes returning briefly at the mention of their father. He hadn’t seen him much lately, and the weight of his responsibilities had only grown heavier on his shoulders. Still, he didn’t want to burden Serena with those thoughts.
“I saw him a few days ago,” Kael answered, trying to sound casual as he pushed himself off the wall and walked over to her, resting a hand on the back of the chair beside her. “He’s... busy, as usual. But, dinner on Monday's like I promised mom I would do." He said, talking of his father. "What about you?"

for the dawn lady everything seemed normal, but internally she was confused, lost and uncertain if she should lean on her siblings or stay out of their way. she'd taken a medium route, trying to make them smile but not annoy them. it left a lot of unsupervised hours, such as now while keirnan was off duty and the other guard her brother had assigned her was half asleep on his chair near the entrance to the balcony she'd chosen. she'd much prefer he not be there at all, his slight snore a distraction from her thoughts. perhaps that wasn't a bad thing. it's not until the door opens, jolting him awake, that her attention turns from the gardens below, brow cocked at who strolls through the opening. " general, surely there is another balcony for you to visit. "
Cillian stepped through the door, catching the half-asleep guard’s startled reaction with a shake of his head. His gaze shifted to the lady standing at the balcony, her brow raised in mock annoyance. He took his time approaching, leaning against the doorway for a moment as if contemplating his next move.
“Ah, but none of the other balconies come with such charming company,” Cillianhe shrugged at her, his eyes briefly drifting to the garden view she had been focused on before turning back to her. “Surely you wouldn’t deny me a moment of peace with such a lovely view?” In truth he had happened by wanting to see her. He had a hard time keeping her off his mind lately, since the last time he ran into her.
"even cauldron made fae do not have any special abilities, not one that would ever surpass a high ruler's abilities." she had entertained every angle, considered every option that might have granted the king these greater abilities. it was always highly plausible that once he outgrew his sickness in his adulthood, he would have the strength his father had, but no king in the history of prythian had been blessed with what kabir has been. until they had clear answers, the high lady of summer cannot help but wonder what sinister force was behind this. or rather what did it want? what further awaited them? it was also for this purpose, she did not trust the peace settled here most days. it was always an inherit expectation of a storm brewing on the horizon. her gaze shifted to what poppy was gesturing towards the scrolls she has laid out. "the dark mother is from the cauldron." recalling what daxton had shared with her. "us being tossed here, i wonder if it was not intended by either of our mothers. nonetheless, it is possible it some consequence of power struggles between lands that are effecting the king." that was the safest one, but they had to consider alternatives. at this point, alina knew it was less about what was causing him power, and more of would he would do it with and what they were to do reign in him.
Poppy listened carefully, her brow furrowing as she considered the weight of Alina’s words. The thought of a king with powers that surpassed even the high rulers was unsettling, to say the least. She shifted her gaze to the scrolls before her, fingers lightly tracing the edges as she mulled over the possibilities. "You're right," Poppy said cautiously, her voice soft but steady. "No one, not even a Cauldron-made fae, should be able to possess such abilities without some external influence. It’s... unnatural."
She paused, glancing back at Alina. "The idea that this could be some consequence of power struggles between lands that makes sense. But it doesn’t make it any less dangerous. If this is a force none of us fully understand, it could be manipulating him for its own purpose. And who knows what that purpose could be?" Poppy's expression grew more thoughtful as she gestured toward one of the scrolls. "The Dark Mother is an ancient force, but even she is bound by certain rules, certain limits. right? I mean everything has to have limits."
it was true what was said, that in the most desperate of times - the gods would make a believer out of just about anyone. saint wasn't sure where he placed his faith in entirely, outside of his inner circle. he had a enough decorum to keep those thoughts to himself, and certainly not insult his court's high priestess even if the faith they carried was far more difficult to carry most days. "i have come to learn that sometimes its not about believing in a high power, than it is having faith in those around us." saint certainly did not place it in the deities, particularly when their own mother seemingly vanished and left her children to their fates. "it's the most what we can do especially where our loved ones are concerned." they certainly kept the high lord of dawn sane. "as well as most of us are, and frankly, they could be in worse conditions so i take relief seeing them each day."
Cillian listened thoughtfully, his gaze steady as Saint spoke. It was an interesting perspective, one that resonated with him more than he expected. In times of desperation, faith could indeed be a fickle thing, whether in gods or in people." I can understand that," Cillian responded, his tone reflective. "Sometimes faith isn't necessarily about believing in a higher power. It's more about trusting the ones we surround ourselves with." He nodded, the weight of his words sinking in. "Especially when it comes to those we care about." He paused for a moment, considering what Saint had said about their loved ones keeping them sane. It was something he could relate to, even if he wasn’t always quick to admit it. "Is there anything that I can do to help you with?"
“Yeah, yeah... I just needed to get some things off my chest,” he chuckled, a light laugh escaping him. The party had been the perfect outlet, a way to release everything he had been keeping bottled up. Tiernan felt a bit clearer now. Even though his conversation with Roland had left him frustrated about their family ties, his focus remained firmly on the mission ahead. "I have some personal plans in the works that will take me away from Spring when we return..." He paused, knowing the weight of his next words. He wanted those plans to be protected. Although he knew they were more than capable of looking after themselves, having an extra set of eyes on them would bring him peace of mind. "I just want to make sure they're safe and okay while I'm gone."
Cillian nodded thoughtfully. "I get it," he said. "We all need to clear our heads from time to time." He couldn't help but wish he'd taken his own advice the previous night. His thoughts had been a tangled mess ever since his run-in with Erilyn, and no amount of distraction seemed to quiet them.
Turning his attention fully to the young lord, Cillian's curiosity piqued. "Away from Spring? What kind of plans do you have in mind?" he asked, aware that the other man wasn’t obligated to share but also knowing that understanding the situation would help him better prepare for the journey back. It was always better to know what potential challenges lay ahead."You know I'll make sure they're safe," he added, his tone firm but reassuring. Something about this conversation made him pause. He shifted slightly, his gaze steady but more concerned. "But what about you?" he asked, his voice softer this time. "Are you doing alright? Sometimes we focus so much on others that we forget to check in with ourselves."

"i found these books on the dusk court." the scholar began as she approached the other scholars. the fact that the library had allowed her to take them out had to be a sign that they were okay to read them. she would have been stopped if it wasn't something that they were allowed to read. though she questioned what was in them that they could truly learn. "i figured maybe we could go through them together. if you would want to."
Poppy’s eyes lit up with curiosity as she approached the group of scholars. "You found books on the Dusk Court?" she asked, her tone brimming with excitement. She glanced at the books in the scholar’s hands, her fingers itching to open them and dive into whatever knowledge they held. The fact that the library allowed them to be checked out only piqued her interest further. "I’d love to go through them with you," Poppy continued eagerly, stepping closer. "There’s so little we know about the Dusk Court... and who knows what secrets or insights might be hidden in these pages?" She reached out, running a hand lightly over the cover of one of the books. "I’ve always been fascinated by them. I wonder what we’ll find."

SHE MORE than just heard her thoughts - she spoke back to her. But, as... cute as this stranger had been, as unassuming, Yanyan would not risk the mainlanders knowing too much about dragons.
& the riders' bonds with them.
"It's quite alright." Yanyan chuckled, "It is only natural of you to be intrigued." she paused for a moment, pondering her answer. "It is much like... speaking on two sides of the tunnel. We only hear each other when we intend to talk to one another. As for feeling her... well, every pet owner feels their animals, do they not? I have a few cats around my cot that I can just feel are scratching my couch again." she chuckled.
a lie, but safer than truth.
Poppy’s eyes widened slightly as she listened, a spark of curiosity lighting in them. Poppy wasn’t one to push too hard, especially when it came to something as secretive as dragons and their riders."That makes sense," Poppy replied with a soft chuckle, playing along with the lighthearted tone. "I’ve had my share of pets over the years, and you’re right. There’s this... connection. You just know when they’re up to no good."
She studied Yanyan for a moment, sensing there was more to the story than what she was saying, but she wasn’t about to press. The mainlanders didn’t need to know everything, and she respected Yanyan’s caution. "Still," she added with a grin, "I imagine your bond with a dragon is a bit stronger than with a couple of mischievous cats." She let her words hang, a playful but respectful hint that she wasn’t fooled, but she also wasn’t going to pry any further.

horses had probably been their first love in the their life. it had only made sense that indigo would spend the majority of their time in the stables or in the pastured with the horses of the spring court. unfortunately being in the dusk court meant that they didn't have the same access to the stables that they did back home in the spring court. though that hadn't stopped them from spending time with the horses. returning from the stables, they spotted their older brother in the gardens. "ah cillian, what are you up to in the gardens?"
Cillian looked up from where he had been absentmindedly walking around the garden, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as he saw Indigo approaching. His sibling’s love for horses was something he had always admired, though he knew being in the Dusk Court had made it harder for them to indulge in that passion.
"Indy," he greeted warmly, straightening up. "Just... taking a break from everything," he said, gesturing to the surrounding flowers and greenery. "The gardens have a way of quieting the mind when things get too noisy up here," he added, tapping the side of his head lightly. He studied them for a moment, noticing the faint dusting of hay on their clothes. "You’ve been with the horses again, haven’t you?" he asked with a knowing smile. "I imagine it must be a little harder here without the same access as you had in the Spring Court. How are the stables treating you?" There was a softness in his voice, a hint of concern for how his sibling was adjusting to life away from their home.
