He was a wreck. He didn't know who he was anymore. All of his grand plans and schemes to snatch that title that had gone to his cousin after all in the end...

He never wanted Lucanis to die. He never wanted his cousin to become an abomination. How deeply had Zara gotten into his head? How many of their plans had truly been his, or where they all hers all along?

And what exactly had she done to him...

He could practically feel the electric heat of the Venatori seductress' vile gift squirming like a living... thing... beneath his skin and coursing through his veins. But how could he talk to Lucanis about any of that?

"How do you think they treat a traitor?" Illario asked, but there was no venom in his voice, no spit and vinegar. It was a solemn admittance of defeat. It was an acknowledgement that he knew he was getting what he deserved. Food, confinement, the bare minimum of comfort in his own home because he was a Dellamorte.

What privilege.

"You could always leave the window open and look the other way." Illario answered, looking finally to his cousin, keeping his face as cool and calm as he could. His jaw tense ever so slightly, his hands curling on themselves as they supported him where he leaned back on the edge of his bed.

Lucanis almost smiled at the window jest, but if anything, it hurt. He knew that once he opened that window, he might never see his cousin again. That broke his heart just as much as hearing the truth: that Illario had been the traitor all along.

"You cannot control if I pity you or not," he replied, the hurt bleeding into his voice as a kind of curtness. It forced him to take a breath before continuing.

"And I chose to try and forgive you, but it seems that's not enough."

His eyes raked over Illario. His cousin seemed thinner than usual. Either he wasn't eating, the guards were lying about his rations, or maybe there was something more to it.

"I came here to understand why you did it, before I make any further decisions about your punishment. I need honesty, and then..."

There was still Elgernan, and Rook was gone. Their group was in disarray, with two others missing or gone, yet they needed to keep moving forward. In the end, Lucanis needed to know if he could trust his cousin enough to put everything aside and fight the final god together.

"Ah," he hummed, allowing time for the message to sink in. Bellara was always looking out for everyone. She acted with such grace and innocence, it often made Lucanis jealous, but he knew there was more to her story than just warm smiles and a genius mind. Still, he was grateful.

"I'll have to thank her later. I know a few desserts that she likes..."

His voice trailed off as he saw Emmrich through the door crack of the pantry. Truth be told, if someone else had dared to enter, he'd have kindly (or less kindly, depending on the person) asked them to leave. Not in this case, however. Emmrich was different, and likely just doing his secondary job of being the ground physician.

"I'm fine, Em," he replied, raising his arm to show the fresh bandage he'd wrapped around it and then waved him in.

Would Emmrich have done a better job? Most certainly. A part of him wondered if some of those skills came from bandaging mummies. Did Nevarra even have mummies? They did like skeletons, so maybe...

Lucanis' constant consideration and want to do things for others was both something that Emmrich admired but it also at times worried him. Mostly, when the rogue was taking more care of the rest of them instead of taking care of himself. Emmrich knew well enough himself the want to make sure everyone was taken care of, but he long ago learned that if he let himself get burnt out taking care of everyone but himself, he would very much fizzle to ash and be left scattered to the wind with no one to gather the pieces together again.

The last thing he wanted was to see Lucanis put himself in such a state. The fact that the assassin was also injured but had opted to treat himself rather than seek out Emmrich for healing also had the mage concerned for the other man's wellbeing.

"I have taken falls before, Lucanis, I will be perfectly fine, but thank you for your concern." Emmrich said gently, resisting the urge to chide Lucanis for his own injury, though he couldn't help eyeing the bandaged injury with a soft frown.

An overturned crate sat nearby, one Lucanis was using as a table. A crack split one of its wooden panels. It had very clearly been kicked, though Lucanis paid it no mind.

"That doesn't mean this one wasn't bad," he replied, standing to cross the room. He did his best, drawing on his training, to suppress the limp - mostly from the fight, partially from the kicked crate. "I've been told doctors are the worst patients, so I just want to be sure."

He gestured to his cot, where Spite sat on the end looking just as defeated as Lucanis felt. Trapped, even. The demon had raged at him for so long that it seemed even spirits, or demons could grow tired.

Yet the presence of Emmrich was enough to stir him from his sulk. Spite sat up, looking over, and shifted to make room for Emmrich to sit beside him.

"Spite's also there," Lucanis warned, knowing the professor couldn't see him, and that Spite had a terrible habit of whispering into people's ears.

Spite huffed. "Where is Curiosity?"
