"You know I can't hide my lies very well, why would you want me to say such a thing?" Alistair teased, coming up behind her as she tended to her plants. He tilted his head slightly, "Besides if you were singing, the animals would've started howling, it would've been much easier to find you, but it would've been a whole thing." His sister was clearly filled with plenty of more thoughts on the matter than he was, but he was good at listening, surprisingly – it was one of the few things that he found he enjoyed doing for his family.
Looking around at all the leaves, he shrugged once more, "I'm fine, Alara. I want to know what you're thinking. You know – your big ideas. Maybe your suspicions? Have you seen mother? She's fuming."
Alara rolled her eyes with all the practiced indignation of an older sister who refused to let him have the last word. "Excuse me, the animals love my singing voice." Or perhaps she was only able to think so because they could not object. She didn't make a habit of testing that particular skill in front of other people, preferring not to embarrass herself whenever possible.
"I thought she was going to send a star straight through the guard this morning," she admitted when he asked about their mother, lips quirking for a moment before she gave a shrug of her own. "As for suspicions... I don't know. It's odd that the Eryndor court went untouched, but I don't know them well enough to judge if this is something they would do." The words felt insufficient even as she spoke them and she paused again, troubled, before shaking her head. "I mean... who would do something like this? It's awful."
her shoulders grow slightly less tense at the sound of her daughter's voice, turning in order to take her in. she can't help but allow her eyes to scan over her, ensuring for herself that she was safe and in one piece. things like these always did make her slightly more protective over her children than usual. there was little that mattered more to her than their safety and happiness, and in times of crisis, that only intensified. " you doing alright, starlight? " she greets her in return, hands dropping from her hips as she steps towards her third born, signalling to the guards to step outside the room and give them some privacy. " can you fix the mess i made in the garden? " the corner of her mouth tugs up in weak apology, chin ducking in slight shame a moment later. she knew how dearly alara loved theirs gardens, though it had hardly been ruined under usual circumstances. " perhaps you can focus your gifts on the eryndor court. it's suspicious that they weren't impacted in all this. "
"I'm alright." She gave a small, reassuring nod at the question, offering her mother a smile that did not quite reach the worry lingering in her eyes. At the mention of the garden though, at the clear apology in the queen's expression, the smile widened into something warmer. "Already done," she assured her, making it clear she understood what happened and had no hard feelings about it. "You can hardly tell now." If only the same could be said about the rest of their world. Alara suspected it would be some time before they were all so at peace again.
"I thought that too. Odd that they're the only ones unscathed." The words lingered as she turned the idea over in her mind. Suspicion was a dangerous thing to cast without proof, especially now, but... "I could speak with Nurbanu. I doubt she would say anything outright if she knows. She's far too clever for that, but she is a healer as well. Surely she would want a stop to any killing." Her certainty wavered just slightly at the edges, but she pressed on. "If nothing else, I can see if she has any ideas on what another court may have done."
helion's eyes soften as he takes in his daughter, trying to not invade her privacy and unleash his empathic powers to see how she felt. ever since his children had reached maturity, the consort had done his best not to invade their emotions – he mostly succeeded. each of his children had been taught to shield their minds as well, standard practice for any fae but required for those of royal blood. they could likely block him if he tried, but it did all boil down to him feeling invasive and wishing not to.
he sighs gently at the answer, moving to kiss the top of her head before settling in the seat next to she and the window. " you do not have anything to be of use in, sunbeam. " he says lightly. helion leans forward and picks up her hand, offering a reassuring squeeze. " your mother and her circle are hard at work, we only have names for now. " he doesn't want his children to be too involved, but he knows the dangers of not telling them what they wish to know either. " you do not need to busy yourself with all of this, little one. "
Alara's smile softened, this time reaching her eyes, when her father pressed a kiss to the top of her head. The familiar gesture eased her nerves and the tension she had carried since the night before began, at last, to loosen as he settled in beside her. "I know I do not need to," she agreed quietly, hand turning in his grasp to return the squeeze with a gentle one of her own. She meant it. There were few in the world she trusted more to keep the darkness at bay than her parents, still... "But this is our home, and someone is harming people in it." Her gaze drifted again, this time toward the gardens beyond the window. There were lands she had nurtured, spaces that had always answered her with life, and the dissonance of it all only deepened her resolve. This place had always been, and was always meant to be, safe. Something determined settled into her expression as she looked back at him. "So, whose names? Anyone I could talk to?" A faint, almost knowing curve touched her lips as she worked to negate any disapproval he might still have about her involving herself. "You know no one ever suspects I'm up to anything."
@crownsreign setting: greenhouse on the palace grounds
Their family had seemingly dispersed amongst the grounds; with so many visitors, wandering eyes, and whispers from the shadows, Alistair found himself listening in on more than he should. It wasn't exactly something that he didn't like to do, in fact, what was life without good gossip, but for now, he figured he should do some wandering to clear his own head. His footsteps took him towards where he knew a certain someone would be busying herself amongst the plants. "Haven't killed any poor flowers yet, have you? I feel like if I concentrated hard enough, I would be able to hear you all the way from the entry gates."
The greenhouse had become even more of a sanctuary in the days since the world outside it became sharper, filled with suspicion and too many unanswered questions. At the sound of footsteps, Alara's head lifted, instinct tightening her shoulders. But then she saw her brother, and the the tension eased from her. "You'd better mean my singing and not my thoughts," she returned, a quiet huff of amusement following, though her gaze lingered on him with knowing suspicion. Alara had never quite trusted that Alistair wouldn't try reading her mind, no matter how well she'd learned to keep it her own.
She turned back to the vine she'd been tending, gently guiding it along its trellis. "Thankfully, the plants seem less bothered by everything going on than I have been." There was a pause then, as her hand stilled against a leaf. She glanced back at him, humor mixed with something more searching. "How are you doing with it all?"

she'd thrown a god damn star when she found out. ripped it from the heavens, threw it down until a small crater formed in the gardens. no matter, that was hardly a problem that the earth users in her court couldn't fix for her. a problem she couldn't seem to fix, however, was the missing noble. she knew of them, had heavily considered them for one of her competitors. yet no matter how high and low her guards searched, they seemed to have vanish as if the star goddess herself had snatched them from earth. "i don't care what you need to do, find them! " she snaps at a guard before scoffing, hands clenching her hips as she fumes.
Alara had already coaxed the crater back into something resembling beauty, the torn earth smoothed beneath her careful attention until petals lifted toward the light as though nothing violent had ever touched them, when she found her mother. Felt her, truly, in the way the air itself seemed to tighten around her temper. "Mother," her voice came gentle and soft as she approached, each step measured so as not to startle someone already on edge. There was no reprimand in her gaze, no mention of the damage to her beloved plants. Just understanding, as she knew what had driven the monarch to this. She'd seen the body herself and would not soon forget it.
"I'm sure everyone is doing all they can." This she said just as carefully, not just for her mother but for the guards within earshot. "Speaking of which," she paused a few steps away, hands loosely clasped before her, "What can I do? I considered attempting geomancy, but without knowing who we're searching for, I fear the earth would offer little guidance." Still, if there was something she could do, she would rather act than wait for the next scream.
closed for aurelis family members
helion had been worried for his children – and those his wife had with other partners that he still laid claim to – more than his wife, which he felt was perfectly reasonable. lina could handle anything in his mind, and he'd be certain to spend more time with her as soon as he accomplished this primary task – one he expected to also ease his wife's own stresses once completed. and so leon moves into the space where the one he's sought resides, loud enough to not be too much of a sneak. " were you able to rest at all last night ? "
Alara had not truly slept, instead spending hours with her eyes closed while her mind wandered restlessly through the memories of the night before. Each time she drifted too near sleep, she saw again the stillness of Lord Himlish's body or felt a shock of worry for Lord Voss, who still had not been found. She was already awake, then, when her father arrived, seated near the window where morning light drifting through the curtains could almost convince her all was well.
She turned at his voice, offering him a small, steady smile that did not quite reach her eyes. "Some," she answered before rising and smoothing invisible creases from her skirts. "Enough to be useful, at least." Her gaze drifted briefly past him, as though the answers she wanted might be found somewhere beyond the walls of her family's private chambers. "Have we learned anything?" she asked, voice low and careful. "About what happened, or why?"
( imogen waterhouse, cis woman, she/her, 180 ) — descending upon the court of aurelion, we announce the arrival of ALARA AURELIS, PRINCESS of AURELION. amongst the whispers they are known to be COMPASSIONATE + INDEPENDENT, which is reflected by the sense of honeyed sunlight through greenhouse glass, the kind of tenderness that makes even the most temperamental roots choose to grow, and a smile that dazzles just enough to hide the flicker of doubt beneath it when they approach. at the age of maturity, the goddess blessed them with CELESTIAL, EARTH + HEALING. they have arrived as a SPECTATOR of the ancient games and are currently FOR the era of peace aethara has maintained. ⋆ written by kel.
