People still try to push aro/ace people into relationships, marriage, and then tell them it’s their duty to give their significant other/spouse sex. They are pushed into abusive corrective therapy, because some see it as a mental illness rather than a sexuality. After all, if someone doesn’t want sex or romance, something must be wrong with them, right? (Sarcasm)

And what does the lgbtq community do? Say it’s no big deal, deny they are going through problems like them, some even denying they exist at all.

But you know what? None of that even fucking matters. LGBTQ isn’t competitive suffering. Some people in the LGBTQ community have it awful while others have managed to get through life pretty well. It doesn’t make anyone any less valid in their sexual or gender expression. We’re supposed to be a community of acceptance, yet sometimes all I can see are gatekeepers. Exclusionary, elitist, assholes.

Kids of all ages, do you feel any attraction to genders other than your own gender? Even if it’s just a little bit? How about just romantic feelings? How about no attraction whatsoever? How about sexual attraction only in certain situations? Do you feel you are a gender other than the one you were assigned at birth? How about multiple genders? How about no gender at all? Does it change from day to day? Is there something else you feel other than the norm in sexuality and gender that i didn’t mention that still involves people that are an appropriate age?

Congratulations! You’re all LGBTQ, no need to pass anymore qualifications! Pick up your rainbow flag or whatever flag you relate to, know that you aren’t alone in this, there’s people just like you, and feel pride in being you and being valid. No one can take that from you, no matter what someone else claims. Do whatever you want with this except feel like you are less than anyone else. Have fun kids. Don’t let the exclusionists get you down.

I’m allo, but I was also what was called back in the day “a late bloomer.” I was into my mid-twenties before concepts like sex started being interesting to me.

My mother was kind of pushing at me one day, why didn’t I have a girlfriend, etc. etc. Finally she said “don’t you ever just … want sex?”

I said “not really?”

She went very silent and then told me she needed to take me to the hospital. Because, quote, “that isn’t normal. There are tumors that can cause that.”

Please notice something here: I wasn’t even identifying as ace. Just “eh, it might be important later but right now I have other things that are more interesting to me” was enough to get me labeled “not normal” and potentially brain-damaged.

Now I want you to imagine the reaction if I were to say “no, I’m asexual” instead of “not really.”

I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have been able to talk her out of the hospital if I had. And for me, this was just a thing I hadn’t grown into yet. For ace people it will be every day for the rest of their lives.
