Ellis giving Maggie up for adoption makes no sense to me.
So, I'm currently on Season 13, but I'm still stuck on Maggie's existence as a character. In all of Ellis' scene's its very apparent that she resents Thatcher and Meredith because she sees them as what prevented her from having her life with Richard. But if Maggie was planned from the beginning, why wouldn't Ellis just show up on Richard's doorstep with Maggie in her arms?
I don't like the plot point where Ellis tries to commit suicide to get Richard's attention. That scene is wrong for so many reasons that other more eloquent bloggers elaborated on better than I could. I don't think having a suicide attempt scene, in and of itself, is bad, but I really dont like how they framed Ellis' reasoning for the attempt. If Shonda needed a way to get Ellis into the hospital to discover she's pregnant with Maggie, there were so many other ideas they could have added to the script without showing an insensitive portrayal of suicide. I understand why it is included but I'm not gonna focus on that for this post.
I understand why Ellis canonically chose to give Maggie up. But I feel like if Ellis was so desperate to be with Richard, as the show portrays, I think she would give up the child that she had with the man she loves.
If I were a writer for the show, this is how I would go about the baby Webber storyline:
Ellis and Richard have their meeting at the carousel.
Ellis gets into a car accident and is taken to a hospital. (Not SGH)
Ellis is informed about the pregnancy and makes the doctors swear not to say anything to Thatcher.
Thatcher arrives at the hospital to pick up Meredith. (Who was with her during the car accident.)
Meredith overhears Ellis and Thatcher's argument while a nurse tries to keep her distracted.
Ellis and Thatcher fight about the state of their marriage, and Ellis demands a divorce.
Thatcher leaves with Meredith.
Ellis sobs for a while, then comes up with a plan.
Ellis is discharged from the hospital.
Ellis rents a vehicle, packs a dufflebag, and leaves to hide out in Boston until the baby is born.
While Ellis is in Boston, her and Thatcher's divorce is finalized, and Thatcher starts seeing Susan.
No one in Seattle sees or hears from Ellis for months.
Ellis gives birth and returns to Seattle.
Ellis shows up at Richard and Adeles house holding baby Maggie in her arms.
Adele answers the door, and the two go inside to confront Richard.
Adele throws Richard out of the house and files for divorce.
Richard stays at a hotel close to the hospital.
Ellis returns to work at SGH, but Richard avoids her as much as possible.
Adele calls Thatcher and tells him about the baby and what she knew of the affair.
Thatcher falls into a depression and starts drinking heavily.
Thatcher is fired from his job because of his drinking and starts lashing out at Meredith as she is a constant reminder of Ellis.
Susan tries to shield Meredith from Thatcher's cruelty.
Richard runs into Ellis while she's dropping Maggie off at daycare and sees his daughters face for the first time.
Ellis lets Richard hold the baby, and Richard feels he has a duty to be a good father to her.
Richard stops avoiding Ellis, but their affair does not start up again.
One day, Adele comes into the ER because of a cut on her hand from a kitchen accident.
Richard is forced to do Adele's stitches as no one else is available.
While Richard treats her wound, Adele admits to knowing about Richard's affair for a while.
Richard confesses that he tried to end things with Ellis and that he didn't know she was pregnant.
Adele returns to work at SGH, and she and Richard slowly start warming up to each other again.
Ellis grows jealous as she sees Richard and Adele growing closer.
Ellis and Richard get into multiple fights as Ellis keeps pushing for a relationship.
Richard is conflicted about who he wants to be with.
He loves Adele and feels guilt over how he hurt her over the years.
He loves his daughter, but he is upset with Ellis for not telling him about the pregnancy, disappearing for months, and then ambushing Adele with the baby to make her leave him.
Richard tries to make a relationship with Ellis work, but the resentment he feels causes problems.
Richard starts drinking to cope with the situation.
Richard and Adele sleep together after a challenging day where many patients died and he gets into a fight with Ellis in the OR.
Richard's drinking gets worse.
Richard and Adele start having dinner together at the house every so often.
Ellis becomes increasingly jealous and bitter over Richard and Adele's mending relationship.
Ellis issues Richard an ultimatum: her or Adele.
Richard leaves work for a week to think and drink.
Adele checks on him and finds him blacked out on the couch. She nurses him out of his drunken stupor and demands he go to rehab.
Richard realizes he wants to be with Adele and talks to her about what to do about the baby.
Adele admits she's not fond of the idea of raising Ellis Grey's child, but she is willing to deal with it so Richard can be a father to her.
Richard tells Ellis about his decision and discusses a shared custody arrangement.
Ellis is devastated and enraged but goes along with the discussion.
Richard leaves, thinking he and Ellis will be co-parents.
Ellis immediately goes and puts Maggie up for adoption to spite Richard for picking Adele over her again.
Richard takes extended leave to get help for his alcoholism, thinking he and Ellis will come up with a plan for shared custody once he gets back.
Months pass, and Maggie is adopted by another family.
Thatcher ditches Meredith with Ellis because he can no longer stand to look at Meredith and be reminded of Ellis' betrayal.
Richard finishes rehab and moves back in with Adele.
While Adele is out running errands, Richard is confronted at the door by a very drunk Ellis Grey, screaming and cussing at him for going back to Adele.
During this confrontation, Ellis tells Richard about Maggies adoption and says that if he doesn't want to be with her, then he doesn't get to be a father either.
Ellis is escorted away from the building after concerned neighbors overheard the shouting.
Richard is devastated and tells Adele about what happened when she returns.
Richard returns to work at SGH.
His relationship with Ellis remains strained and distant for years.
Ellis is diagnosed with early onset alzheimers and leaves SGH under the pretense that she is traveling to conduct research.
Meredith Grey grows up and joins SGH for her first year as a surgical intern.
