We’re gonna need our microscopes for this one, lads! This is a freshly morphed Mexican spadefoot toad [Spea multiplicata] found in Silao de la Victoria, Mexico. Like all spadefoot toads, offspring of this species develop extremely rapidly, to escape their breeding pools before they dry out. Eggs hatch in as little as 24 to 48 hours, and tadpoles morph into frogs in around three weeks, sometimes less. Image by Oscar Báez.
