it's manipulative. that's the real underlying issue here. like i don't think anyone who's pulled this type of bullshit is sitting there thinking "today i'm going to manipulate my young impressionable fanbase into policing eachother for my benefit." but regardless of intention, that's exactly what they're doing.
if you're a minecraft streamer/youtuber, you have to be aware that a large portion of your audience is teenagers. you have a responsibility there, even if it's uncomfortable for you to think about. you don't have a right to take advantage of them, no matter how innocuous it seems. no matter how many of your friends and colleagues are doing it. no matter how normalized it is in the creator spheres you occupy.
there's a lot of talk about parasocial relationships, from a lot of creators whose understanding of them seems to be "fans doing things that make me uncomfortable." this definition ignores the kind of parasocial relationships that many creators actively encourage—the kind that benefit them at the emotional expense of the young people they influence. a lot of creators seem to want an audience that agrees with everything they say and even takes an active role in ensuring the wider community follows all the rules and never does anything "weird."
the fact is, if you seek to control your audience beyond reasonable accommodation (keeping inappropriate things out of main tags and such), you are implicitly encouraging your fans to attack eachother over the rules you've set. and in many cases, like this recent one, you're explicitly telling them to do so. pitting your audience against eachother for your own benefit. it's manipulative, controlling, and completely unacceptable.
creators need to start understanding the unsavory parts of their fanbase as inevitable when their platform reaches a certain size. they need to stop taking it personally. it's not for you! it's part of the job you signed up for, and sure, it's not exactly your fault that nobody warned you the full extent of what would happen, but it's not ours either for doing what we always do. we aren't making the weird stuff for you; most of us are already regulating ourselves so you don't have to see it unless you go looking for it. you are a public figure, and there are consequences to that choice, and at some point you're going to have to grow up and make peace with things not being exactly how you want them to be.
