The thing about Eddie is, he likes to tease. He says things that Steve does are stupid, he fondly calls him an idiot, he jostles him about βdumbass behaviorβ or being βpure of heart, dumb of assβ
And likeβ¦theyβre jokes. Steve knows theyβre jokes, itβs not like heβs walking around thinking Eddie is just bullying him mercilessly. Itβs not like he thinks that Eddie is just being cruel, because of course heβs not. Eddie doesnβt have a genuinely cruel bone in his body. But likeβ¦jokes always have a bit of truth in them, donβt they?
Anyway, itβs not as if the proof isnβt in the pudding. Even before all the head trauma, he wasnβt very good at school. Reading is hard and when he does manage to get through a chapter none of it sticks in his brain. Math makes no sense, the numbers never want to stay where he puts them. Heβs never been great at remembering things, and he doesnβt work through things very quickly. It takes time, and people donβt want to wait for him to get there.
He barely passed high school, and only because Nancy helped him, so he didnβt get into any colleges. And sure, Eddie failed twice too, but heβs good at making connections. Heβs good at reading and metaphors and shit. No one ever rolls their eyes at Eddieβs ideas. So he knows the reasons that Eddie was bad at school are very different from the reasons Steve was bad at it.
So like, he knows heβs stupid.
Even the eleven year old in the group is smarter than him, he gets that. But it doesnβt mean itβs not humiliating when people point it out. And itβs not like he can fight back about it because theyβre not wrong. So he just falls back on sarcasm and tries not to be too mean when they get to him. Because his first instinct is always cruelty, even now. Heβs better at biting it back, but itβs what he does. The only thing heβs ever actually excelled at.
And likeβ¦ he knows heβs lucky? He knows that itβs a miracle that the kids put up with him, and that Robin for some reason finds kinship with him, and that Eddie looks at him so soft and sweet with words of love on his lips. He knows they all care about him.
But sometimes it really hurts to know how much they donβt respect him. And like he doesnβt need to be smart, he just needs to be able to take a hit and get back up again to take the next one. But sometimes he wishes he could be. Daydreams about reading one of Eddieβs books and surprising him with how much he knows about it. Telling Robin he did manage to get into the same college sheβs going to, actually, and they can get an apartment together off campus. Of telling his dad that he doesnβt need his money, because he got a scholarship and heβll get a good job and take care of himself.
But thatβs all they are, is dreams. Because all his brains have been compressed under his hair, or because heβs too pretty to be smart, or because he needs to be told everything.
So when Eddie grabs him around the neck and gives him a noogie and calls him a dumbass and kisses his head, he takes it as the affection he knows itβs supposed to be. And then he just doesnβt think about it until heβs all alone at night and he canβt help but remember. And the tears that come from it are stupid too. Stupid and pointless, but at least theyβre silent. And no one has to know.
They celebrate their one year anniversary with a little picnic on the shore of Loversβ Lake, shaded from the sun and onlookers by the tree line. Itβs not the usual stuff Steve does to impress someone, since they canβt exactly go to a nice restaurant or anything, but he does his best to make it nice.
He reads a bunch of mom magazines to get recipes for food and he gets Eddie a chunky silver bracelet with their initials etched into the underside of a plain plate. Eddie shyly plays him a song on his acoustic and itβs really sweet and it makes Steve cry a little bit because heβs never felt so loved as he does in that moment.
He was so nervous about being able to get all his feelings out with words, so he wrote them down and asked Robin to spell check them and make sure they made sense, not even minding when she made fun of him about it because he wanted it to be perfect. He even typed it out on his dadβs typewriter, but when the time comes heβs afraid of stuttering and stumbling over the words as he reads them, even though theyβre his words, so he just hands the note over instead.
And itβs kind of excruciating to watch Eddie read them, even though his cheeks get all pink and he twists his hair over his smile shyly. But he sits up proudly when Eddie looks up at him and tells him itβs the sweetest thing heβs ever read, and there are some truly sappy song lyrics in there.
And then he says he loves βhis dumb little love letterβ and that heβll keep it forever and Steve tries not to let it get to him. Because Eddie liked it. He thought the words were good enough for a song. But he also thought it was dumb.
And heβs right, it is dumb. Just a bunch of rambles put down on paper because Steve was too afraid of saying it right out loud.
But he likes it, and thatβs what matters.
So Steve shrugs and tells him next anniversary heβll get him a dumb little box for it, and Eddie laughs, and Steve manages to forget.
And three months later, for Eddieβs birthday, he agrees to play in a oneshot Will put together for him. Eddie gets so excited and creates a character for him, a barbarian. Someone who is good at hitting things, he explains, and taking hits.
And that seems to make sense to Steve so he nods along as Eddie explains what the stats are for, and what a stat is, and why intelligence is the obvious choice for a dump stat for Steve. He puts the worst number Steve had rolled there, a five, and jokes that his character technically wonβt be able to read with a score that low.
It cuts a little close to the bone, but he chooses to just be grateful he wonβt have to pretend to be smart during the game.
The game is okay. Dustin gets so frustrated reminding him of what he has to roll every turn that eventually he throws his hands up and Eddie has to take over. Heβs much more patient, but Steve feels bad for ruining his birthday game.
A couple months after that, Steveβs parents come home for an extended period between work trips. Itβs the longest theyβve been home in years, a full two months, and Steve chafes under their presence every day.
There was a time he would have been thrilled to have them there, but now it just feels like every move he makes is being watched with scorn. If he sleeps in a little on his day off, his father calls him a lazy layabout and tells him he should be hitting the pavement in search of a better job.
If his mother catches him on the couch she warns him heβll get flabby if he spends all his time on his butt.
He misses sharing a bed with Eddie, but he doesnβt dare to spend too many nights at the trailer park when theyβre around to ask where heβs been, and obviously Eddie staying at his place is out of the question.
His father starts telling him maybe he should join the military. It wasnβt up to his standards, of course, but the Marines are good for people like Steve (read: idiots) and at least heβd be doing something worthwhile with his life even if it were as cannon fodder.
And Steve tells him heβd rather work at Scoops Ahoy in the stupid sailor outfit for the rest of time than join any kind of government institution, and that stretches into a four hour long argument about how much Steve doesnβt know about Saint Reagan and everything heβs done for the country.
His dad has this super special method of simultaneously lecturing him and making him feel like the worldβs biggest idiot, and Steveβs never been able to push back against it. Itβs like everything heβs ever known just immediately escapes his head and his words get all confused and he canβt explain what heβs trying to say right. So eventually he just falls quiet and listens to his dad rave and does his best to hold back the humiliated tears.
When his dad finally falls quiet and eventually leaves, itβs all he can do to scramble out to his car and drive across town to Eddieβs trailer. Theyβre not home, but he knows where the spare key is, so he lets himself in and goes to lay in Eddieβs bed. Itβs soothing to be there, in a space thatβs so loudly and unapologetically Eddieβs.
His boyfriend his messy and his bed is never made and he doesnβt dump out the ash tray on his bedside table nearly as often as he should, but the sheets are clean and soft and thereβs a pile of the books Eddie is currently reading (he always reads six or seven at a time, switching when he gets bored, and somehow manages to keep all the stories straight in his head) on the floor directly next to the bed.
He picks up one with an interesting cover and flips through it. He doesnβt read any of the prose, but he does take the time to parse out Eddieβs scratchy handwriting in the margins. He writes a lot of question marks and exclamation points and draws frowny faces and smiles next to circled passages. He underlines lines he likes with thick marks and occasionally writes things like βFUCK OFFβ next to ones he doesnβt.
Reading them makes Steve feel like Eddie is there with him, and it makes him smile and relax and forget about the afternoon of getting lectured by his dad.
When the front door opens, he pauses to listen the way he always does when someone comes home, whether itβs here or at his own house. He hears the jangle of keys tossed down on the table, a thud of a shoe hitting the ground, a pause, and then another thud.
He smiles to himself, able to perfectly picture Eddie tossing his keys down and kicking his shoes off lazily. He listens to the jingle of the chain on his jeans as he comes down the narrow hallway, and the faux-surprised gasp when Eddie edges the door open and looks at him.
βWhat is this?β He crows. βA beautiful young man in my bed, reading the sacred texts? Be still my heart!β
Steve rolls his eyes and smiles at him and holds out a hand, and Eddie climbs onto the bed beside him and wraps him up in a big bear hug. Itβs cozy and wonderful and exactly what Steve needs, so he just buries his face in Eddieβs hair and listens to him talk about his day.
Or he tries to listen, but itβs been a long one and Eddieβs cadence is so soothing, and the vibration of his voice in Steveβs chest where their sternums are pressed together feels like a special kind of peace all by itself, so he kind of gets lost in it and drifts a little bit.
And then Eddie laughs and pulls back to look at him, eyes crinkled in a smile, and Steve canβt help but smile back at him, hopelessly, ridiculously in love. And then Eddie says,
βJust as I suspected. Not a thought behind those eyes.β
And Steve doesnβt really know what comes over him. A lifetime of βbeing a manβ and playing sports and running things with Tommy H and Carol at his side had taught him how to choke down tears. Heβs great at it. He can go from sobbing to fresh faced in under a minute flat when he needs to.
But for some reason he canβt stop this.
The tears that build up in his eyes just feel too big, like whole waves of water that rush up over his lids before he can even think to stop it. He tries to blink them away, tries to wipe at the corners of his eyes to pass it off as simple watering, but he canβt because they just keep coming.
Big fat tears streaming down the sides of his face towards his ears and down his cheeks. It doesnβt even feel like heβs sobbing. He doesnβt feel pressure in the back of his throat or burning in his eyes, itβs just like someone turned on a tap in his brain and let them whole room flood and he canβt hold it all back as it escapes from the only place it can.
Eddieβs smile immediately drops, and he coos and uses his thumbs to wipe away the tears as best he can. And then he leans in and starts kissing them away instead, scratching his fingers through Steveβs hair.
Steve feels like an idiot. He wants to stop crying and he just canβt and itβs absolutely humiliating.
βBaby, whatβs the matter?β Eddie asks, his voice soothing and sweet and gentle, like Steveβs a time bomb of emotion and might shatter at a harsh word. Hell, maybe he might. Heβs never cried like this before.
βItβs nothing,β he says, his words stuttering. βItβs really nothing, I donβt know why Iβm crying.β
Eddie looks very doubtful at that. He purses his lips and eyes Steve critically and then kisses his mouth a couple of times in a row.
βIs it your dad?β He asks. βThat guy is such an asshole.β
And it is, a little bit. But Steve knows thatβs not whatβs happening here in this moment, so he shakes his head.
βYour mom?β Eddie follows up, frowning. βBecause Iβm starting to get suspicious sheβs trying to trap you in a gym membership pyramid schemeβ¦β
Steve manages a wet laugh at that one, but shakes his head.
βItβs nothing,β he says, wiping away at his tears once more, though theyβre immediately replaced by new ones. βItβs just been a long day, I guess. Iβm feeling kind of bad, but itβs fine. I just wanted to see you. I miss you.β
And Eddie smiles at that and leans down to kiss him again.
βI miss you too,β he says, sweetly. βItβs kind of embarrassing how much. I miss elbowing you while we brush our teeth and your early alarm waking me up on Wednesdays and even your dumb polo shirts all over my floorββ
And that sets him off all over again, even though he knows it shouldnβt. Itβs not like Eddie was even talking about him, that time, not really. Just his fashion sense, which he knows is boring at best. Robin tells him all the time that he looks like he fell into a Sears catalogue and couldnβt find his way out.
But something in him is apparently broken today, and the flood of tears rages even harder, and Eddie leans back to look at him with a furrowed brow.
βWhat?β He asks. βDonβt tell me youβre that defensive of your beloved polos?β
Steve shakes his head.
βNo, no, donβt mind me. I donβt know whatβs happening, itβs s-stupid.β
He tries not to flinch as he stutters over the word, but Eddie sees more than people give him credit for, and he coos again and kisses Steveβs wet cheeks.
βWell letβs cheer you up, huh? I think Iβve got mini chocolate chips, Iβll make you pancakes for dinner. And we can watch that dumb show you like, the one with the Narc who goes to high school? Gareth taped the last episode for meβSteve why do you keep flinching like that?β
Steve doesnβt know what to do because he canβt stop flinching and for some reason the words hurt so much more today than they usually do. And Eddie is getting mad at him refusing to answer so he just shrugs and shakes his head.
βItβs stupid. Iβm sorry.β
Eddie settles back to sit cross-legged and pulls Steve upright to face him, their knees pressed together.
βItβs not stupid, okay? Whatever it is, itβs not stupid if itβs making you cry like this. Just tell me if I need to kill someone.β
Steve snorts and rolls his eyes,
βYou donβt have the guts.β
βYeah, okay, I definitely donβt. But I can craft a very detailed voodoo doll. Just say the word.β
Steve loves him. He loves him so much it scares him sometimes, because he doesnβt know where to put it all. And he knows if Eddie changes his mind, or tells him he never actually loved him at all, that heβll fall apart. But he just canβt help himself, so all he can do is hope that he wonβt ruin it.
And this could ruin it.
βItβs no one,β Steve said. βJust my brain being stupid.β
βStevie,β Eddie wheedles gently. βStop calling my boyfriend stupid. Tell me whatβs wrong.β
And Steveβs not really sure what to make of that, since literally everyone calls him stupid, so he just shrugs.
βI guess Iβm just wired up because my dad spent a few hours making me feel really dumb today,β he says finally. βAnd I know itβs true, but it still hurts my feelings. I donβt know why itβs bothering me so much today specifically though.β
It feels pathetic to say that something hurts his feelings. He should be tougher than that, he knows it. Heβs a grown man, not a child who has to be coddled. But Eddie had asked.
βI donβt see how it wouldnβt bother you,β Eddie says. βItβs not very nice. And youβre not stupid, Steve. Who told you you were stupid?β
Steve blinks at him for a long moment, wondering if this was somehow a trick question. His dad likes those kinds of things, sometimes. Heβll ask a question he already knows the answer to, just to see if he can catch Steve in something he considers a lie.
βUmβ¦you know, just everyone?β He says hesitantly.
βEveryone?β Eddie asks doubtfully, and Steve shrugs.
βYeah?β
βLike who?β Eddie pushes back, and Steve tries to think about how this is going to be turned around him. Whatever he says will definitely be used against him somehow, but heβs not smart enough to figure out how.
βI meanβ¦Robin, and the kids. Especially Dustin. And you?β
Eddie blinks at him for a long moment, his face running the gamut of emotions. Steve watches carefully, trying to gauge what the reaction will be before it comes. And then Eddie just blinks at him.
He blinks for a long time. Like uncomfortably long.
And then he says, βStevie, saying a show you like is dumb isnβt calling you dumb.β
He says it so sweet and patient, but Steve can hear in his voice how stupid he thinks Steve is for thinking that, so he just rolls his eyes and wipes away at the tears, which are mercifully beginning to stop.
βRight,β he says. βStupid of me toββ
βWill you stop?β Eddie snaps. βYouβre not stupid! I donβt know where you got this idea that I thinkββ
βJesus Christ, Eddie, fine! You donβt think Iβm stupid! Just the clothes I wear and the shows I watch and the things I do and the letters I write!β
Eddie is getting defensive now, his hackles are visibly rising, and Steve wishes he hadnβt come here. He should have gone out to the lake, or the quarry, or Skull Rock. Anywhere but here.
βWhat are you even talking about?β Eddie spits. βWhat things? What letters?β
βMy dumb little love letter,β Steve spits, clambering off the bed. βAnd my empty eyes, and my fuckingβ¦stupid dopey smile or whatever. Good hair and a good ass and no brains, you say it all the time! And I know, okay? I know, but you donβt have to say it!β
βSteve,β Eddie says, his shoulders slumping, βStevie, come on you know I donβt mean those things. Iβm just teasing you!β
Steve crosses his arms over his chest and holds himself tight.
βI know,β he says. βI do know that. Butβ¦just because youβre teasing doesnβt make it not true. And a guy can only be told how stupid he is by every person he knows twenty times a day for so long before it starts to hurt, okay? Iβm trying not to take it personally. Iβm just having a weird day. Sorry.β
βShit, Steve,β Eddie says, and Steve shrugs again, because he doesnβt know what to say. Words fail him once again.
βSorry,β he says again.
βNo,β Eddie says, abrupt and harsh. βNo, you donβt have to be sorry. Iβm sorry, okay? Iβve been a huge asshole. Literally the worst boyfriend in the world. Not even a good regular friend, just a big pile of shit all the way down.β
βNo,β Steve protests immediately, hands fluttering uncertainly. He wants to comfort Eddie, but heβs not sure if theyβre allowed to comfort each other right now. βNo, Eddie, youβre great this is my fault. Iβm being too sensitive.β
βStop trying to comfort me when Iβve made you feel like shit,β Eddie says crossly, and Steve bites his lip. βI should be comforting you! And apologizing like a million times. Because Iβve been mean to you, over and over again and i wasnβt even trying to be. I love you, and I made you cry, and thatβs really fucked up.β
βI know you didnβt mean to,β Steve says. βI should have said something. How were you supposed to know?β
Eddie sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose for a moment.
βYou should have told me,β he agrees. βI hate that Iβve been hurting you for so long and you didnβt say anything.β
βI didnβt want to make a fuss,β Steve says quietly. βI thought I was handling it.β
βYou shouldnβt have to handle it,β Eddie says stubbornly. βNot from me, not from your friends. Because you are smart, Steve. Youβre so smart. You blow me away sometimes, with the things you remember. The connections you make. You see things in a way I never could have considered, and you make me think about my own understanding of things all the time.β
He reaches out to take Steveβs face, and then hesitates right before making contact, like he isnβt sure itβs okay. But Steve doesnβt ever want him to feel like he canβt reach out, no matter what they were arguing about, so he presses close until Eddieβs hands are warm on his cheeks.
βYou are smart, Steve Harrington. Youβre creative and youβre quick on your feet and youβre so thoughtful. You know I read that letter you wrote me all the time? Itβs so beautiful itβs made me cry like a baby at least four times. You have trouble saying what you mean, sometimes, but what you have to say is always worth listening to. And Iβm really sorry I made you think it wasnβt.β
βIβm sorry too,β Steve sniffled, his tears starting up in earnest once more. βIβm sorry I let it go so long. Iβm sorry I didnβt trust that youβd react okay to me speaking up.β
βIβm sorry I made you think I wouldnβt,β Eddie responded, and Steve laughed wetly.
βWe canβt keep apologizing back and forth like this. Weβre gonna get stuck in a loop.β
βIβd apologize in a loop until the heat death of the universe if thatβs what you needed,β Eddie said. βBut if Iβm honest it might be more fun to kiss and make up.β
And Steve laughed and gave him the kisses he asked for, again and again for the rest of the evening until they fell asleep curled together in soft sheets.

thinking about drunk stevie climbing into eddie's lap and cuddling close and steve being like "eddieeeee do you like boyssss" and robin is like god no steve and trying to drag him off but steve has his arms around eddie's neck and he's not budging. in true awkward, closeted fashion, eddie says no. steve's silly smile turns into a pout. "oh. thats so sad......"
eddie and robin make panicked eye contact over steve's head.
steve narrows his eyes and leans in. "do you think you might like boys tomorrow?"
Steve: Isn't the idea supposed to be "you saved my life, now I owe you a debt" or something like that?
Eddie: Nope! Other way around. You saved my life, now I'm your problem. If you don't like it, kill me yourself.
Steve: ...
Eddie: God wanted me dead, now you get to find out why.
merry christmas ππ₯Ί
STEVE: Yesterday, I overheard Dustin saying βAre you sure this is a good idea?β and Eddie replying βTrust me,β and I have never moved from one room to another so quickly in my life.
Eddie learned about two months into dating him that Steve is an active sleeper.
He was always a bit hurt when Steve wouldn't stay the night at the trailer park; dreaded watching Steve's car drive away after a night in. At first, Eddie thought it was a hit and run situation, a one night stand that spans more than one night. And yeah, it makes sense; King Steve probably just wants a new way to get his dick wet, got tired of all the babes and such. Of course this thing they have - whatever that is - isn't serious. It makes sense and still, Eddie's hurt.
But then he starts noticing things. Like Steve's reluctance to leave but his refusal to fall asleep no matter how late it is. And it's not just with Eddie either. He's noticed that Steve always seems to clock out early at any overnight event their little group have - DnD nights in Wheelers basements, Dustin's sleepovers, hell, even Buckley's movie nights. Steve is always first to arrive and first to leave.
Eddie just can't figure out why.
He goes as far as to ask Robin. Because if anyone can give any insight into the mysterious life of Dethroned King Steve Harrington, it's Buckley. But even she has no idea. She says she hadn't even noticed.
He gets his answer a week later.
They're in Eddie's trailer. Steve drove around after his shift, they're lounging in his room, Steve sitting up again the headboard, Eddie practicing his guitar, and it's midnight, bordering on Steve's usual check out time. But Harrington's been complaining about a rough day at work - something about being swamped and Buckley ditching her shift for boobies, Munson! She ditched me for boobies - and Eddie can see his eyes fluttering and his head lolling before quickly shooting up again. Rinse and repeat. Until Steve finally begins to bustle up and leave.
Eddie begs him to stay, half because he wants him to and half because there's no way it's safe to drive home when you're two fleeting seconds away from dropping comatose. They argue back and forth, Steve typically reluctant and a bitβ¦nervous? Scared? Eddie doesn't know. And it doesn't matter because he wears Steve down and soon enough Steve is wearing Eddie's pajamas and the two of them are cuddled up in bed together.
Using Steve as his own personal Teddy bear, Eddie sleeps soundly that night.
At least, until about three in the morning.
Ever since Vecna, Eddie hasn't been the heaviest of sleepers. So when he hears banging in the kitchen rattling through the thin membrane walls, he's upandatem pretty quickly, abruptly women up to the fact that his boyfriend isn't beside him in the bed anymore. Another bang comes from the kitchen.
Okay, he's panicking.
Armed with the old tire iron he keeps by his bed for just an occasion like this, Eddie creeps towards the kitchen, mind racing. Who the fuck is here? Did someone break in? Something? From another dimension? Images play in head like worn film, images of Chrissy Cunningham floating in his living room, the sound of her bones snapping eerily similar to the banging now.
What he is met with in the kitchen is nowhere near as scary, but ten times more weird.
Because Steve 'The Hair' Harrington is in the middle of his kitchen surrounded by what little pans and pots the Munson's own.
"Uhmβ¦Stevie?" he calls, ever so softly. And then louder when he doesn't get a response. "Steve?"
Steve stands like a ghost in the shadows. Eddie can't help but stare at his face, so relaxed unlike anything he's ever seen before.
Then. He speaks.
"I swear I left it hereβ¦" Steve mumbles, to himself or maybe to the dark shadows surrounding. The words come out slow and monotone. Hushed, slurred together in a broken string of consciousness. It does nothing to ease Eddie's worry.
"Left what here?" he asks, looking around at the mess for some item of Steve's he might've lost. All the while Harington just stands there, dazed.
Then. "Flowers. Told Eddie I'd get him flowers."
Eddie furrows his eyebrows, pushing forward into his boyfriend's space and thoughtlessly cups his face in his hands, making him look at him. Steve's eyes are just barely open, and they're glazed over with this lost, far off look. He doesn't look at Eddie, rather through him.
And somehow, Eddie catches up, a scoff of disbelief leaving his lips. Who would've thought?
"Okay, alright sweetheart," the grin is prominent in his voice, dripping with fondness. "You're still asleep, huh?" Something inside him surges and he finds himself grazing his other hand faintly across Steve's forehead to brush his bed hair out of his face. His eyes are all the more clouded over in sweet nonsense as Eddie pushes his hair into something that doesn't resemble a sad brown mop.
"I can'tβ¦remember whereβ¦" Steve mumbles, trying to break free from Eddie's hold but ultimately failing. He lets his head drop against Eddie's neck.
"Okay, let's get you back to bed, alright?" Because that's what you're supposed to do with people who sleepwalk right? Never wake a sleepwalker, that's what they say isn't it? "Hold my hand, it's OK Stevie." Pressed up close against him, Eddie breathed in the smell of Farrah Faucet spray and citrus shampoo and led Steve back into his bedroom, hand in hand.
"How about you try to stay in bed now," he says, leading Steve as he leans against him, skin warm and citrus and weary against his own, feeling a little too much like something Eddie wants to keep holding onto.
"Got somewhere to be,"
"Not right now, cmon," Eddie gently eases Steve down onto the bed, and surprisingly, Steve lets him. Not long after, Eddie is beside him, holding onto him tight once more.
In the morning, Steve wakes up confused, like he's surprised he managed to stay in one spot all night, but doesn't mention anything about sleepwalking. He does ask Eddie, "Did you sleep well? I didn't wake you, did I?" and Eddie just kisses him, tells him, "Best sleep I've ever had. You should stay around more often."
And when Steve agrees, Eddie decides not to bring it up.
It happens a few more times after that. Not all the time but more often than not Steve will stay over Eddie will wake up to him wandering about the house. The majority of the time it's stupid stuff; Steve sluggishly pacing around the room, Steve mumbling sweet nonsense to himself, Steve trying to take a shower in the hallway. Pretty harmless stuff.
Except for the time it isn't.
That time, they're in Steve's house, big and empty. That time, Eddie wakes up at 4am and just barely catches sight of Steve's fleeting figure down the stairs. Like most times before, Eddie is quick to follow him down the stairs towards the living room, staring blankly out the window. A metallic glint flickers across Eddie's eyes. His eyes widen with concern when he realises it's a kitchen knife. Steve doesn't move, but he's breathing real heavy, like he's just waiting for something to happen.
"Steve, darling." He begins, hating how his voice is cracking. "Will you come back to bed? Please?"
This time, Steve shakes his head. Frantic. Paranoid. Eddie watches his grip on the knife tighten.
"Can't." Comes the raspy, hoarse reply. "The lights. It's out there. Swear I saw it. I swear-!"
Softly, Eddie shushes him before he can get more worked up. He stays put a good six feet away, entirely out of self preservation. Harrington's deadly with a weapon in his consciousness and Eddie wouldn't like to find out what he does in his sleep, thank you very much.
"Saw what, love?"
"I heard a thud. It's so cold."
Oh. Oh shit okay.
Eddie isn't unfamiliar with nightmares. God, after what he saw it'd be weird if he didn't have them. After Mike's apparently real psychic ex-girlfriend cut ties with The Upside Down, Eddie was a mess. He couldn't sleep, plagued with visions of terror bat's tearing away at his flesh bit by agonising bit. He can't count the number of times he called Steve in the late hours of the night in need of reassurance. To tell him that it is over now.
Steve was a rock for him. Eddie almost envied him, with how easily he managed to readjust back into normality. Never did it cross his mind it might've all been a facade.
"Steve," Eddie begins, firmly and unwavering. Slowly, he begins to etch more into Steve's space. "Listen to me. The gate is closed. Vecna and the rest of his little hell beasts are gone."
In front of him, Steve doesn't move. He doesn't even appear to have heard Eddie at all.
Eddie swallows, trying to push the thought that maybe, after so near death encounters, Steve's finally gone mad, come undone at the seams, and this is what his mental state has come too: armed with a scarily sharp knife, ready to fight any sudden movement.
"Do you think you could put down the knife, dear?" Eddie suggests lightly, gently touching the outside of his hand incase Steve needs some sort of anchor to come back to. Underneath the edges of his fingertips, Steve's touch is warm, his pulse comfortingly steady, and Eddie holds onto it, selfishly, a little longer than he should have, that tightness he is becoming so acquainted with returning to his chest. He then slips his hand further within Steve's own, carefully taking the knife from Steve's grip and interlocking their fingers as if it were the most natural thing ever. As if it had always been that easy.
"There we go," Eddie praises as he places the blade down on the coffee table. "See? All better now."
"Betterβ¦"
"You're safe, Steve. I'm safe. Everyone is safe. Those things can't hurt you anymore."
"But- the lights-"
"Are fine." Steadily, Eddie begins to back out of the room, gently pulling Steve along with him. "Now let's get you back to bed, yeah? You still gotta get your full twelve hours of beauty sleep don't you?"
A dopey smile ghosts across Steve's lips as he huffs a laugh. It's barely anything. But it's enough for Eddie.
"Yeah you do," he teases. They're in the bedroom now. Eddie guides Steve underneath the duvet. As soon as he hits the soft cushions, he curls around himself like a child, protecting himself from the intangible cold or phantom nightmares, while refusing to loosen his grip on his boyfriend's hand. Eddie feels his throat close.
He has questions. How long has Steve been having these nightmares? How many of them result in sleepwalking? How many of them are violent enough to grab a fucking kitchen knife? Why didn't Steve tell him sooner?
But they can wait until morning.

Overconfident Eddie who's always getting up in Steve's face and flirting with him because he's so sure that Steve's straight, so sure that Steve will just continue to scoff and lightly shove him off when he jokingly asks for a kiss good bye. All that confidence is shattered the day Steve leans into Eddie's space, his breath ghosting over Eddie's lips as he flirts right back. Eddie has no reply, no quick comeback, all he can do is stare back with an open mouth and bright red cheeks. Steve smirks and leans in even closer, his nose almost brushing against Eddie's when he asks, "Can I get a goodbye kiss?"
"You have glasses!"
Steve looks up, in time to see Eddie skipping out of his room. "Why were you in my room?"
"Being nosey. More importantly!" He holds Steves glasses up, almost victoriously. "You wear glasses!"
"No, I don't. I wear contacts."
"You wear- how did I not know this?" Eddie flops down next to him, waving the glasses in his face. "Put 'em on, will ya?"
"No?"
"Please?"
"I'm not putting them on. I wear contacts, I don't need glasses."
He takes them off Eddie, putting them on the side table and, thankfully, Eddie doesn't bring them up again for the rest of the night. And, optimistically, Steve thinks that maybe that means that he's fully dropped it.
Only the next time Eddie comes over, he finds the glasses again, like a sniffer dog. He's doesn't badger Steve to put them on, just puts them on a nearby table. When Steve tries to scold him, he gives his best wide, sad doe-eyes.
"I'm never going to put them on," Steve says.
"Never?"
"Never."
Eddie sighs, flopping down on so he's laying on the sofa, putting the back of his hand to his forehead. "I can't believe you would betray me like this! You have wounded me! It stings, Stevie, deep in my soul!"
Again, the next time, Eddie puts the glasses on a nearby table. He never says anything and, if Steve doesn't address them, then Eddie seems content to pretend they're not there as well.
Even when Steve does address them, Eddie is- as always- very good at matching the mood. He's usually teasing. Though the one time Steve had been genuinely annoyed, Eddie apologized. He said that, if he really wanted him to, he'd stop putting them out. And the next time he hadn't... so Steve teased him. Which started their little routine up again as though nothing had happened.
It makes Steve curious enough to try them on. He hadn't put them on since he'd tried the frames on, before the lenses with his prescription had been put in them.
They're not horrible. But he still hates how they look.
"Why don't you like your glasses?" Eddie finally asked one day, once their usual teasing had died down.
"I just don't." Steve shrugs. "I don't know. They look a little ugly."
"Hm." Eddie frowns. "What's your prescription?"
"Uh, I wrote it on a note inside the case, I think... yeah, here."
Eddie accepts the little paper, but doesn't hand it back. Steve doesn't notice.
A month later, Eddie knocks on his door.
"Eds," Steve greets, surprised. "I thought we were meeting at the Byers house?"
"We are," Eddie holds out a little present. "I wanted to give you these early."
Steve tuts, but accepts the present, stepping back so Eddie can step inside. He doesn't start opening it until they sit down in the living room.
"Wh- Eddie," Steve whines, holding the glasses case like they're a dead animal he doesn't want to touch. "Dude, no, come on."
"Just... look first. Please?"
He rolls his eyes, but opens the case anyway. He's surprised by the frames Eddie's chosen. They're not the kind Steve would have picked out for himself.
"Try them on? I won't look!" Eddie even throws his hands over his eyes.
"Fine. Stay here."
Steve is surprised by how much he does like them, once he puts them on. He only hesitates for a moment before taking his contacts out, so he can wear the glasses instead.
"Thank you," Steve says as soon as he steps back into the living room.
Eddie stares at him for a long moment. "Oh."
"Oh?"
"You look really pretty."
"Oh, ha, yeah, uh," Steve says, stuttering, flushing bright red. "Thanks. Um."
"Seriously. Fucking... jesus. Sorry, it's... you look good." Eddie shakes his head. "Merry fucking Christmas to me."
Yeah I dance around in basketball sneakers and a g-string. That doesn't mean I don't have feelings.
What if Dustin told Eddie all about the Upside Down but said that it was a D&D campaign? He used it as an excuse to go on about Steve and all he's done to help out. And at first, Eddie doesn't believe him because no way would Steve Harrington play D&D with his sheep. But Dustin insists. He goes off about Steves bat and how he tried to sacrifice himself to save him and Erica...
and can you imagine the horror Eddie would feel when he realizes that it wasn't a campaign, that stuff actually happened. Can you imagine his horror when he realizes just how much shit Steve went through to keep the kids safe?
Iβm only kidding. He has no flaws.
