I'm absolutely obsessed with the Dungeon Crawler Carl books right now, I'm finishing up book 2 right now and I'm excited to keep reading (or more accurately, listening to the audiobooks). It's been such a long time since I've gotten to actually enjoy reading a book, and I'm really happy I gave these books a chance.
Anyway, I thought it would be a fun art exercise to draw one of the characters from my work-in-progress comic as if he was in the books! It was honestly a perfect fit, my comic is also a post-apocalypse project (albeit a silly Adventure Time style one) and Maryn would fit right in with the dungeon crawl. It feels really weird to draw him as a human though lol, he's absolutely not in my comics but I felt like this was the most appropriate race for him. He'd definitely stay human. This is an idea of what he'd look like and what his stats would be at the beginning/middle of the third floor.
And because I'm a writer, I did put thought in for this au of mine and how Maryn fits into the world. Maryn is a teenage boy from New Mexico, where he lived at a small ranch/farmstead with his solo mother, Vivian. His ma was a retired army sniper who taught him a lot about survival and living off-grid. He's a very quiet and shy individual who does calculus for fun. The night of the collapse, Maryn had just gotten into a rather explosive argument with his ma (something that happened frequently, they fought constantly), which resulted in him storming out minutes before the world ended. Upon realizing his mom was dead, Maryn was quick to enter the dungeon. He had nothing else to live for, his entire home and family is gone, so why bother attempting to survive on the surface? Hopefully the dungeon will kill him.
In the dungeon, I picture Maryn functioning as a magic-based melee fighter. I didn't write a class because I wanted to come up with something cool and just haven't yet, but I essentially picture him functioning similar to a combination between an eldritch knight fighter and an artificer (both from DND). He tends to prefer to think his way out of problems then just go in guns blazing, but he's pretty handy in a melee fight if needed. He's also a dead good shot with his crossbow (and if he ever gets one, he's dead good with a rifle too). I imagine his main melee weapon is his gauntlets, they both power up punches to deal lightning damage, and can also help him cast various lighting-themed spells. Also, explosives. He's got a thing for explosives. He is a big fan of Carl's, he thinks Carl is brilliant and looks up to him quite a bit. And I think he's trying to fly under the radar and not be super famous (he's extremely shy), but I imagine he would eventually gain popularity with a teenage audience (as much as he hates it). Idk if his stats are balanced at all, I just mostly knew he needed high intelligence and extremely low charisma, and I tried to reference off of Carl's stats at the third floor.
If people have feedback, or fun class ideas, please let me know! I might do some of my other comic characters as crawlers, or do some more Maryn doodles as I continue through the books.
Some illustrations to practice backgrounds! I'm taking a lot of inspiration from how Adventure Time does backgrounds.
I'm trying to teach myself how to do rigged animation after doing frame by frame most of my life. For about a week of work and fooling around on toonsquid, I'm pretty proud of how this looks!
Safe to say I've been loving Dungeon Crawler Carl

Some doodles of my boys :D don't tell my other ocs but these two are my favorites
Some potential redesigns for my apocalypse boys! I wanted to make them look more period-appropriate, their original designs were still a holdover from when the world was a post apocalyptic earth. Now that the world is more high-fantasy, I wanted to give the boys some outfits that suited it! Any feedback is greatly appreciated :D
Some art of my dark urge, Clay! I've never been so devoted to a playthrough character, but he genuinely makes me want to write fanfiction lol
I finally upgraded my old digital art supplies, now I have an iPad and procreate! So here's some doodles of a few things that happened in the last session of a fallout ttrpg I'm playing with my friends. Safe to say last session was...intense lol.
If the character looks familiar, it's because this is where my oc Maryn originated! I play him in this ttrpg, although his character for my comic has evolved past this specific character. So consider this an au :D
Maryn and his creature journals is one of my favorite parts of his character. I imagine he's got dozens of journals, all full to the brim of his various scribblings about the plants and animals of Yuma. Plus it gives me an excuse to do my animal/plant worldbuilding in a fun way that's different from my other work. So here's some Yuma animal designs in the style of Maryn's own art.

I once had somebody ask what Maryn and Rowan do in their free time, because there can't be much to do in the apocalypse. Well...this is it! They explore nature and talk about plants, animals, and rocks. Maryn knows everything about Yuma ecology it seems like, and he's more than happy to pass on his knowledge to Rowan. And Rowan always wants to listen to what Maryn has to say! It's two neurodivergent kids coming together to talk about their shared special interests and I think it's really sweet lol.
I'm currently on vacation, and thought it might be fun to put my ocs Maryn and Rowan in some of my photos! I imagine that even though their world does have a coastline, both of them live very inland, so they've probably never seen the ocean before.
Some more Rowan art! I've been drawing this kid a lot, I just love his stupid face.
A little Rowan animation I made in like, an hour. I love this little dummy so much lol
also I graduated college today! yay me :D
oh Rowan, the little weirdo that you are. knowing him, all three of these facts are equally important to him

Working on a small comic that involves my oc Maryn's childhood! So here's a quick sketch of little baby Maryn, he's adorable and I love him
Working out a rough design for the character I'll be playing in a DND campaign this summer! Meet Zircon, the half-elf artificer. He's a dweeby teenager on a quest to find out what his adoptive dad was researching before he mysteriously died.
