Weekly Bookish Question #431 (March 2nd - March 8th, 2025)
Do you have any opinions on fonts used in books (got any favorites? fonts you hate?), or are you fine with whatever?
I don't have many opinions on book fonts, and find most of them perfectly fine/readable.
But I struggle with books and graphic novels that utilize handwriting instead of standard fonts. A lot of them are really scratchy and wonky and, while I admit they add a fun touch of personality to a page, they're really, really hard for me to read.
I have acquired some storage shelves for my movie collection! Previously, they were scattered around, tucked away on my book shelves, in a box, or balanced precariously somewhere else entirely, so it's nice to have a place for them.
And there's enough space left over to put a few movies on display, along with some of my pops, so that's a fun bonus.

My copies of the LOTR trilogy, before and after I read them.
I bought the cheap mass market paperbacks so I could comfortably mark them up; the insides of these books ended up being thoroughly highlighted, and I wrote lots of notes in the margins. I don't annotate books very often, but I really wanted to give it a try on these, and I ended up having a lot of fun with it.
Someday, I'll acquire a nice set that I'll keep in good condition, and these can sit next to them. 📖

I've seen the Jackson film adaptation of "the Return of the King" multiple times, but this is my first time reading the book.
So a lot of the time, my reaction to the events of the book are something along the lines of "oh, this went differently in the movie. Interesting."
But other times I'll get to a part that isn't in the movie at all, and my reaction just becomes
Sick of the word "emasculate." It needs to go back onto the high shelf for awhile, so these adult toddlers can't use it in every single sentence.
Movie Legolas: *very serious warrior, aloof, otherwordly, stares off into space meaningfully a lot of the time, unbeatable in combat, just a cool and stoic guy all around*
Book Legolas: *shrieks and drops all his arrows when an orc enters the room, sasses Gandalf at any opportunity, forgetful airhead, literally leaves his companions buried in the snow while he runs off to talk to the Sun herself*

Went out thrift shopping today! Successfully found some interesting items, including:
A copy of Oscar Wilde's "the Importance of Being Earnest." A previous owner had left a puppy-themed "thank you" card in it as a bookmark.
A copy of "the Doll People," which was one of my favorite books growing up. The previous owner left a puppy-themed bookmark in it.
"Twilight" and a "Duck Commander" books in the wild. Very curious about them.
A book called "Three Centuries of Children's Books in Europe," which seems to contain both short children's stories and essays about them, a topic which I find very interesting.
A book called "the Elizabethan Zoo," which contains inaccurate drawings and descriptions of various animals, some real and some mythological.
And two Superman movies! One live-action ("Superman Returns") and one animated ("The Last Son of Krypton") and neither of which I've ever seen before.

On all levels except physical, I am a hobbit.
Thinking more about it, I am short (just over 5 ft tall), I'm overweight and have a round face, I'm not what most people would consider pretty, I unfortunately grow hair on my feet, I like keeping my little collections, I don't handle travel well, and my favorite living space in my life so far was a basement apartment (underground living space).
I think I may actually be a hobbit.
Truly the best thing about living with my mother is on any random morning I'll come into the kitchen for breakfast and she, having just gotten off the phone with her sister, will turn to me and ask "you wanna hear what inanely stupid thing your aunt just said???" and I'm like yes, spill the tea, because she needs a sounding board now and I think the petty drama she and her siblings start with each other is entertaining.
Reeeeaaal tired of reading book descriptions on goodreads that open with things like "'Strangers Things' meets 'the Great Gatsy!' Perfect for fans of 'the Hunger Games!'" Just tell me what this book is about, please. -_-
