Hottake I personally believe diaries Nana is just as bad as mystreet Nana, if not almost worse depending on the season. And I don't understand why people claim diaries Nana is so much better? Is it to keep their "Dairies is better then mystreet in every way" goggles? Diaries is primarily better then mystreet, but just because it's in Diaries doesn't make it better then mystreet.
Firstly, they start off very similar. Both of them are stereotypes and all that. The only difference is that mystreet Nana is also a bit of a stalker on top of that and rpf shipper. This is the only thing diaries Nana has on mystreet Nana outside of the powers she used to have. But it is a huge thing, I will give you all that. The stalking mystreet season 1 Nana does is quite bothersome.
But diaries Nana too talked with an incorrect use of Japanese honorifics. Diaries Nana too talked in third person.
Diaries Nana has even less of a personality outside of this then mystreet Nana. Mystreet is where she got a name outside of this in the first place, and a backstory.
I feel like people imagine Nana is more mature in mcd then she actually is? And I don't know where this Idea came from. Despite the 15 year skip she barely feels more mature then her mystreet counterpart.
I love Dana, but most of what Nana did have going for her is abandoned after season 1. As they make her sole purpose being a wife and a mother and get rid of her unique powers, her rivalry with Lucinda(later given to Katelyn, as much as I enjoy the Katecinda rivalry. Nana was robbed of this). She is only ever on screen afterwards to be either a mother or a wife, and just lacks screentime outside of that. I have no qualms in her being married and having children, at all. However, I do wish for us to see her have more bonds outside of this. Stuff outside of that. And I feel like what she did have, got abandoned because of this rather then utilising it.
While we're on the topic, her powers are so grossly underutilised and only used to serve her anime girl bit. Her power quite literally allows her to animate anything humanoid into life. Yet she only ever brings anime dolls to life. Only once did she mention how scared she is of shadowknights because of how much use they have in her powers and are therefore implied to target her. This interesting plot implications is entirely abandoned afterwards. The fact that she could potentially bring a dead body to life, or make a human like figure out of materials less conventional or anime then dolls (like a scarecrow).
Diaries Nana just feels like unmet potential to me, but I don't get why people believe she is less of a Japanese stereotype then mystreet Nana is. Even her powers are limited to her role as that.
Mystreet season 5 did so much for Nana, it was Jess thinking "Okay how can I fix this mess of a character I created". And her establishing Nana as more then what she was. And giving her a backstory, that allows her to be characterized differently in future seasons then what she started off as.
It gave her an actual name. It gave her depth. It however, did not give us her powers back and I am so sad about that loss.
To be fair, Nana with her powers would've stopped season 6 from happening. She could've one shotted the demon warlock trustttt.
But yeah am I missing something here?
