To See, According to Godlings:
Ryujin’s Mom
Before I get into this, I’d like to preface by discussing Ryujin’s mom.
In “Ep. 89 - The Promise”, we are shown the current sole panel that exists of Ryujin's mom (below).
While I’ve thrown around the idea of her being a godling, I believe she just has grey irises that look white because of the contrast with the black background. As well, her irises (well, at least the one we can see) only have one ring. We do see two different types of godling eyes as well: one with one ring, and one with many (“Ep. 50 - Godlings” and “Ep. 40 - Wishing Well” respectively) (below).
Why is this important? There’s a few key ideas we’ll develop later on using these two images, but I want to go back to Ryujin’s mom. My point is, I don’t think Ryujin’s mom was a godling, but a champion, and that she was a major part of the then-Rose Group’s downfall by going to Hongsan Island 14 years ago. If Ryujin’s mom left Ryujin at the Concordat like a daycare when Ryujin was 4 years old, saying she’ll be back after her (suicide) mission, the timing lines up since we also know that Ryujin was already at the Concordat at 9 years old, when Yesol arrived.
Lucy’s Eyes
With that out of the way, let’s get into the meat and bones of this theory, which revolves around Lucy’s Eyes. My thesis statement? Champions have Lucy’s Eyes. While this is a common idea thrown around, I am here to provide you with all of my evidence and reasoning as to why I think this.
If we assume that Ryujin’s mom was also powerful, based on Ryujin’s gift, that makes us 3/3 for people with Lucy’s Eyes being extremely strong (the other two being Sara and Aera). They also all died at Hongsan (this is why I prefaced with discussing Ryujin’s mom’s possible fate). This cannot be a coincidence.
Those images of godling eyes are coming back into play now; we see that at first, they only have one ring around their eye, but presently, they, or at least the Lee godling, have many. While it’s possible that going into a humanoid form gets rid of some of those rings, I beg to differ.
We know from “Ep. 93 - Perfectly Despicable” that Lucy’s Eyes are a sign of godling blood. I think they’re a “mark of the covenant”. What do I mean by that? The episode that talks about this championship covenant is literally called “Ep. 72 - Blood Covenant”. One could interpret human-godling breeding as a form of covenant, too. Since gaining aberrancy happens in one of two ways, by blood or by championship, who’s to say you don’t gain Lucy’s Eyes when you become a champion? When you inherit Lucy’s Eyes, you also inherit godling blood, so it makes sense.
Here, I diverge into two possibilities about the origin of Lucy’s Eyes. The first is that the rings are a mark of the covenant. The Lee godling has an excessive amount because it has made many, many covenants with champions before. Each time a blood covenant is formed, perhaps the champion must cut up their irises (not sure how, maybe the godling does it) to sign the deal. It also symbolizes giving away part of your humanity, the way you see the world, to the godling.
The second possibility involves the concept of a silver cord. While we’ve seen the “red string of fate” many times in HJ, a silver cord is different. A quick Google search tells you that it’s a term which refers to a life-giving link between a higher self and the physical body. Godlings literally do this; instead of life-giving, they give essence (although essence is vital to life, the champion already has enough to survive long enough to make the deal, so it’s not really life-giving), and Lucy’s eyes could be the two ends of that thread. It also plays into the idea of the godling experiencing things from a higher perspective, almost puppeteering the physical body of the champion in a way.
However, these two possibilities are not mutually exclusive; it’s possible that the way the silver cord in the second scenario is formed by the first scenario, for instance. If you ask, “Well, what about the normal humans who inherit Lucy’s Eyes?” Perhaps this is the solution: you have the delivery system (first possibility) already, but the actual connection (second possibility) has not been established, therefore making them not champions at birth.
