Lace Detailed Steel Objects of Cal Lane
Cal Lane is an artist from Victoria, British Columbia, currently living in New York.
I like to work as a visual devil’s advocate, using contradiction as a vehicle for finding my way to an empathetic image, an image of opposition that creates a balance - as well as a clash - by comparing and contrasting ideas and materials. This manifested in a series of “Industrial Doilies”, pulling together industrial and domestic life as well as relationships of strong and delicate, masculine and feminine, practical and frivolity, ornament and function. There is also a secondary relationship being explored here, of lace used in religious ceremonies as in weddings, christenings and funerals. With this notion of desirable oppositions I created the structure “fabricate”. In this Structure I hand cut lace trimming patterns into 9 I-beams, then constructed a tower, simultaneously macho, and of delicate finery. The metaphor of lace further intrigued me by its associations of hiding and exposing at the same time; like a veil to cover, or lingerie to reveal. It also introduces a kind of humor through the form of unexpected relationships…

Gustav Klimt Brought to Life by Photographer Inge Prader.
Austrian photographer Inge Prader recently recreated Gustav Klimt’s masterworks for Style Bible, a part of the Life Ball Charity Event in Vienna, Austria. A team of over 50 professionals worked on the demanding photography project which raises funds to help those with HIV/AIDS. Makeup artists, costume designers, set designers, lighting specialists and many others worked with models and fully ornamented props to bring to life the fascinating, erotically charged work that Klimt is known for during his “Golden Phase.”

Crocheted Wire Anatomy by Anne Mondro
Shoppers’ changing tastes, and years of economic sanctions, are putting in jeopardy one of the world’s most complex and labor-intensive handicrafts.
“It’s so time consuming, real hand work,” said Mr. Zollanvari, the carpet dealer. “A labor of love. And what does it cost?” he asked, before answering the question himself: “Almost nothing.” A 6-by-9-foot handwoven carpet costs around $400 in Shiraz, depending on the pattern and quality.

Craft/Work is holding a second stitch-in to make work for the 5.4 Million Women Project on Saturday, May 28th in Chicago, IL!
In June 2016, the United States Supreme Court will determine the most important reproductive rights decision in almost 25 years. Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt will rule whether Texas can shut down nearly all abortion clinics in the state and prevent 5.4 million women of reproductive age from accessing the healthcare they need. Using craft as activism, artist Chi Nguyen — in partnership with the Textile Arts Center and the Center for Reproductive Rights — is holding a series of stitch-ins to make physical the number of women whose right to safe and legal abortion is currently at risk. With each line representing an individual woman, the 5.4 Million and Counting project is only finished when all 5.4 million lines are embroidered. Join Craft/Work for a public stitch-in to create works for this project! Everyone is welcome: no experience is necessary and all materials will be provided. All ages welcome from 4-6pm, 21+ after 6pm (Cafe Mustache policy).
