Blood gushes out of my mouth when I speak

Every sorry and every woe

I stain your nice new shirt

Lips riddled with sores from a not-so-gentle lover

Another night driving home at 4am with a stinging in my soul

Every new face and every body added to the count has to be doing something

I convince myself it’s the cure

To the years of not-good-enough

But as the rain comes down in my windshield

I can’t help but wish I could just cry

I come close when they push me against the wall

I planted some zinnia seeds today

It was a day-drunk idea

I scattered them between the weeds and glasses of whisky-soda

Where the sun would shine on them

And the rains would fall the hardest

To give them the best shot

I stumbled around the limestone rocks

Adorning the surrounding soil with possibility

Envisioning a bouquet on my kitchen counter

The hot water meets the skin

Ironically met with a chill

wet hair clings to me as I have clung to people of the past

The makeup running down my face just the same

You can’t tell how hard you cry in the shower

Just sink down and let the tears envelope you like a heated blanket

The shampoo gets in your eyes and it stings

Everything stings

Hold tears of times past

My young soul is stored in the swollen purple abyss

I rub ice on them to try and tighten away the memories

The air I hardly deserve whistles away through my vocal chords

Mouthing apologies I’ve said to many times again and again

But they come out as repetitive echoes and whimpers

Silently hoping to be sewn back inside

Scarlet red seeps down to the rug I found on the side of the road

It had too many stains to begin with
