Yes! Letās talk AquaMera! Heyo, there will be spoilers in this post.
Tbh, I only passively shipped them. I never really dived headfirst into them as a ship - probably because I wasnāt as exposed to Aquaman comics/the character as much as other DC characters - BUT the movie took me over the edge.
Arthur Curry??? More like Arthur constant-heart-eyes Curry. I am pretty sure I was convulsing in my seat every time he looked at her. Iām such a sucker for the āomg, heās holding my hand!ā trope and they delivered. The constant hand-holding? Because they are in it TOGETHER? That will always give me absolute life. OH AND the look on his face when he found out she was betrothed? D E S T R O Y E DĀ M E. He looked so hurt and confused and HER FACE WAS EQUALLY BROKEN AND I WASNāT READY??? AND WHEN HE WAS FIGHTING AND SHE COULDNāT TAKE IT ANYMORE AND CAME TO THE RESCUE?? YES. EQUAL ROMANTIC PARTNERSHIP IS ALL I WANTED FROM THIS MOVIE AND I GOT IT.
Them walking around Italy. THEM. WALKING. AROUND. ITALY. It was so sweet watching her fall in love with human culture aND THE ROSES. IT WAS SO CUTE AND FLUFFY AND MY HEART WAS EXPLODING. I need someone to write a fic where she finds out roses arenāt meant for eating ASAP. He had zero hesitation. He saw her do it, went, āoh, yeah, Iām totally in love with this woman,ā and took a giant bite of the roses. AND SHE LOOKED SO HAPPY. LIKE āARTHUR, YES, I ENJOY THESE (what do you call themā¦ OH-) FLOWERS, I AM PLEASED YOU DO, TOO.ā She was planning a romantic dinner of roses. I feel it, yaāll.
And I love that they can tease each other. Thereās no malice; all the teasing had the harm of aĀ guppy and was cheeky and funny. Arthur has such high respect for her (and women in general~). And the only time Mera had bite in her teasing was when she was trying to protect him from getting hurt (even then she was looking at Arthur like YOU BIG GALOOT, THIS IS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, DONāT FIGHT ME ON THIS). āNot bad for an imbecile, huh?ā āNot bad at all.ā EIUENGAOENGOAEG.
They protected each other from the get-go. The scene of her saving his dad? ICONIC (and badass af, my goodness, I think I fell in love with her, too). The look on his face when she walked through the water glowing as bright as any starā¦ I am pretty sure God Is A Woman was playing in his mind. The fact that Mera never needed saving - she could hold her own and I didnāt have to suffer through a damsel in distress trope. (I mean, sometimes Arthur got a little damsel-y, but thatās an entirely different topic - and something I loved, btw). Mera was a guiding light and comforted Arthur when he was insecure (another trait of his I love) and needed that reassurance.
I canāt even explain to you how much I loved that kiss, btw. I was waiting for it all movie and I kept thinking that if it didnāt have the painting-esque shot that many other scenes in the film had, I would be severely disappointed. I wasnāt. SHE INITIATED THE KISS WHICH IS WHAT I WANTED.His hand slowly moving to her waist. Her leg practically wrapped around him. Him losing his thought process right after like, āHot damn what a kiss, can we do it again?ā
AND HE KISSED HER TEMPLE AT THE END IN CELEBRATION. BYE.
Okay, Iām gonna stop. I just have a lot of feelings.
