In some circles, the legendary Chupacabra is believed to be a genetic experiment that escaped from military control. Others theorize that it’s of extraterrestrial origin, or even a cover for an underground vampire cult. One thing that most cryptozoologists can agree on is that the Chupacabra is a vampire-like creature that drains all the blood and, sometimes the organs too, of its victims through three holes in the body placed in the corners of a triangle. The victims, most often farm livestock, are reportedly drained of all their blood, but are otherwise left intact.

The literal translation for the Spanish word “Chupacabra” is “goat sucker”. It has been sighted in Puerto Rico, Mexico and even the United States and Russia and described as a heavy reptilian animal, almost as big as a small bear, with sharp spines that run from its neck to the base of its tail.

The Chupacabra made its debut in the world’s  imagination in 1975 after a series of farm animal killings in Puerto Rico. Rural villagers came forth with claims that an unidentified creature was killing their animals in the early morning hours by biting their necks. Whatever it was left strange puncture-like wounds on its victims and were reported to have had their bodies bled dry. Witnesses reported hearing screeching noises and flapping sounds like that made by the wings of a large bird. Initially, it was suspected that the killings were committed by a Satanic cult; later more killings were reported around the island, and many farms reported unexplained loss of animal life.

The Chupacabra fame peaked in 1995 when eight dead sheep were discovered with triangular puncture woulds in the chest. They were drained of all their blood. In August of the same year, many Chupacabra sightings were claimed and hundreds of farm animals were reported killed.

Since 1995, there have been hundreds of livestock killings that are believed to be linked to the Chupacabra. There have also been numerous sightings, most notably in central Russia where in March 2005 two farming families suddenly lost 32 turkeys. The bodies of the turkeys, found in the morning, had been completely drained of blood. Then, in the village of Gavrilovka, sheep fell victim to the night time vampire. Altogether the losses in the region amounted to over 50 animals.

After examining 300 dead animals, scientists found that the bodies were not completely drained. In fact, wildlife scientists believe that the Chupacabra is non-existent and the sightings are merely cases of mistaken identity. They believe they are most likely just coyotes. Many people who allegedly believed that Chupacabras exist said that the killers were not coyotes because the animals were left uneaten. This argument was vetoed by scientist who said that inexperienced coyotes can sometimes leave their prey uneaten. They also said that the bite marks were just the punctures of the canines that the attackers left on the prey.
