In true form with the Blue Devils' experimental nature, their 1991 show paid tribute to the Stan Kenton Jazz Orchestra, notorious in their own era for using mellophoniums (a remarkable chimera of a French horn with a forward-pointing mellophone bell).

The main theme of La Strada (1954) is a wistful theme first played by the Fool, then later adopted by Gelsomina onto her trumpet. In its final appearance, the leitmotif is sung by a woman who tells the strongman Zampano of Gelsomina’s fate after he abandoned her.

Magic of Orlando brought the party to the field in 1997, taking the stage Mardi-Gras style and encouraging audience members to clap and sing along to "Lil' Liza Jane."
