If ONE MORE PERSON says “What if they’d medicated Van Gogh!?” I think I’m permitted to set things on fire.  If they’d medicated Van Gogh, he’d either have painted twice as much, or he’d have been happy and unproductive.  And you know what? Starry Night wasn’t worth a terrible price in human misery. It’s neat. It wasn’t worth it. Sometimes I wonder if being an artist makes me jaded to ART. Because it’s not magic and it’s not mystical, it’s just paint or pixels.  And it can do amazing things! But you don’t owe humanity to be miserable just so you can move paint around in interesting shapes. Jesus.  Art is not some kind of Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas bargain where you agree to be miserable so everybody can go “oh! Neat!” for 5 minutes.

Why are so many kids with bright prospects killing themselves in Palo Alto?
Poverty and disability go hand in hand. The poverty rate for working-age people with disabilities is nearly two and a half times higher than that for people without disabilities. Indeed, recent research finds that half of all working age adults who experience at least one year of poverty have a disability, and nearly two-thirds of those experiencing longer-term poverty have a disability. People with disabilities are also much more likely to experience material hardships—such as food insecurity; inability to pay rent, mortgage, and utilities; or not being able to get needed medical care—than people without disabilities at the same income levels. The same goes for families caring for a child with a disability.
“Disability is a cause and consequence of poverty”
This whole article is great, and concludes with concrete policy suggestions that would help disabled people living in poverty. Step 1: explicitly address disability as part of anti-poverty policy agendas.

This is so good. I try to be mindful of things like this but it can be hard if you feel self-conscious about your feelings in the first place!

Mental illness can creep up on you.
It starts small.
I don’t want to do my homework. I don’t want to go to school/work. I don’t want to see my family. I don’t want to see my friends. I don’t want to go out. I don’t want to have fun. I don’t want to get dressed. I don’t want to eat. I don’t want to get out of bed. I don’t want to wake up. I don’t want to live.
This is too accurate.
Finding the Right Therapist
Before scheduling your first appointment here are some questions to ask your therapist:
How often do you treat [diagnosis]?
What approach do you use in therapy?
Do you use any techniques from CBT/DBT/ACT?
What do you think is the goal of therapy?
What’s expected of me?
After your first visit, here are some questions to ask yourself:
Did I feel heard by my therapist?
Did I feel the therapist respected me?
Was the therapist condescending?
Did the therapist seem like a real person, or did they seem like they were playing a role?
Did they respect any research I did prior to my visit?
Did they respect diagnoses made by previous therapists?
Was the therapist active or passive during the session? Which do I prefer?
Does it seem like the therapist will be open to hearing about all of my feelings, including frustrations I may have relating to them?
Did the therapist have a positive outlook on my treatment?
Did I feel better or worse after the session?
Did I feel comfortable with the therapist?
Did my therapist make me feel validated?
Did it seem like a safe place to express my thoughts and feelings?
Did I have to educate my therapist on experiences I felt they should have already been educated on (e.g. LGBT issues)?
Things to remember:
A good therapist will welcome your questions.
A good therapist will answer your questions using plain, understandable language.
A good therapist will make you feel comfortable and will be understanding of your anxiety and other reactions.
“most homophobes are actually just closeted gay people!” translation: I don’t want straight people to be held accountable for their homophobic actions so I’m going to blame homophobia on gay peopleÂ
yeah, i feel like this is linked to the phenomenon (which i hate) of straight people making gay jokes about homophobes. it’s like, “oh! you’re homophobic? y'know what an appropriate punishment would be? being gay! because being gay is terrible!”
And frankly, even if a homophobe is a closeted gay person, how is it funny to mock the degree of self-loathing necessary to be openly, fervently disgusted with something you secretly know you are?
That’s not some homophobe getting their comeuppance. It’s someone who was told they were an abomination so frequently they ended up saying it themselves, and that’s a fucking tragedy.
Employers should not be allowed to be exempt from medical privacy laws, the laws against genetic discrimination or the Americans with Disabilities Act in order to force their employees to provide them with private medical information about themselves and their families. The only way to keep your medical information private is to pay a fine of up to $4000, which means these programs are not voluntary if you can’t afford it. The bill targets poor people. Are Americans just supposed to trust our employers with sensitive medical information, when this law removes the protections we have against discrimination at work? This bill is before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions- a committee you are all a part of. I ask that the committee not let this bill pass to the full Senate. I would ask Senator Alexander to withdraw his bill.Â
This is a pretty terrifying bill that would allow for workplace wellness programs to be except from the ADA and other laws that protect people from disclosing personal medical information to their employers. Please sign / share and write your representatives. You can use govtrack.us to find contact information for your representatives and more information about the bill.

Touch Isolation: How Homophobia Has Robbed All Men Of Touch
“In America in particular, if a young man attempts gentle platonic contact with another young man, he faces a very real risk of homophobic backlash either by that person or by those who witness the contact. This is, in part, because we frame all contact by men as being intentionally sexual until proven otherwise. Couple this with the homophobia that runs rampant in our culture, and you get a recipe for increased touch isolation that damages the lives of the vast majority of men. And if you think men have always been hands-off with each other, have a look at an amazing collection of historic photos compiled by Brett and Kate McKay for an article they titled: Bosom Buddies: A Photo History of Male Affection. It’s a remarkable look at male camaraderie as expressed though physical touch in photos dating back to the earliest days of photography.”
Platonic touch is crucial to human development and happiness, and this article discusses the damage done to everyone when two men can’t casually touch without fear of backlash, and when the burden of physical affection is solely placed on women.
One interesting about Indian culture is that, because affection between couples in public is taboo, hand-holding and other platonic physical affection between same-sex friends is not sexualized or read as a gay act. So you can regularly see pairs of male or female friends walking down the street holding hands, or laying across each other at the park. It’s strange to see how the repression of romantic expression between straight couples has effected same-sex pairs ability to express their friendship in public.
bad people will abuse the “call-out” method to turn people against innocents, but bad people will also abuse criticisms of the call-out method in order to get away with saying or doing bad things, while turning people against innocents who try and point out their bad behavior
it’s almost like no matter what side of an issue you stand on, scumbags will find out how to adapt to the environment, learn the lingo, and use it to manipulate systems and spaces so they can get away with hurting people
