Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.

I was wondering, when is the second chapter for this month coming out? I’ve checked ao3 an embarrassing amount of times in the past week for an update.

Also, I’m really curious what tv show inspired the last chapter. I don’t watch many shows, so I have no hope of finding it. I would love watching the one that inspired that epic fight tho! thank you!!❤️❤️

Anyway, it was Interview with the Vampire Season 2, Episode 5.

So I wrote the original version of the argument before I watched the show but then went back and made it ten times nastier and more personal.

There's a level of unhinged screaming cruelty in arguments that is very specific to close family/relationships. Where suddenly your intimate knowledge and care of the other person becomes ammunition to throw back into their face to try and claw back any ground or dignity from the humiliation of the moment.

When you grow up in a dysfunctional family or your parents going to through divorce, it's difficult to find this type of blow up fight accurately depicted in media. Like, tv shows and movies never quite go hard enough on just how terrible and personal it gets. That's why some fictional fights go viral, like 'A Marriage Story' a few years ago or 'Die My Love' this year. The sort of fight that is so accurate to real life it triggers my fight or flight response lol.

While the original fight on SCF was mean and nasty, I went back and made it worse. For example, Tom cruelly ripping into everything he finds lacking about Harry, and then of course Harry responding in kind by ranting about Tom's inevitable failure and comparing him using physical abuse as a control tactic to their matron. Also, the choking lol.

Here is the fight from the show that inspired me. The second half in particular where they just start interrupting each other with cruel mockery ughhh it's so real and the acting is Hehdhehehjsjs. This is like cocomelon for me I could watch it all day.

and grace is trying so hard to not accidentally be sexist or assign gender roles to a monogendered species, so like, trying hard not to call someone he/him just because they like sports, or she/her just because they seem caring, or whatever. and he's having a hard time about it because he's like oh man why am I assigning the pronouns I'm assigning, i hope I'm not bringing any of my biases into this. just absolutely eating himself up over it

he tries to fix this by starting to roll a die, or throw darts at a dartboard, but his students immediately throw a fit because the point of the word-gifts is that they are specific, picked deliberately for them, right? and grace tries to explain gender bias and so on, but it becomes clear these kids could genuinely not give less of a shit, they just want to know what their AGAG (assigned gender at grace) is, alright? why is this so hard for him to understand??

eventually grace comes to the conclusion that he's on a different planet, and severely overthinking this, and that his kids really just are having fun--they really don't see the grace-given pronouns as categorization, he figures they see them as something more akin to astrology. or an eridian tiktok trend. when grace learns they call the assigning a word-gift he probably cries tbh

"teacher grace!!! what my pronoun question???"

"hmm. getting big they/them vibes off you"
