Remembering when I recommended one of my friends RGU and she said “I basically already know what the plot is” and then I asked her “do you know about all the incest?” and she was super surprised.

I find it strange how this shows reputation among more general audiences is “sword lesbian show” when in actuality it’s “allegorical deconstruction of patriarchy, gender roles, sexual violence, and incestuous abuse show also featuring sword lesbians”. Like when I watched it I sort of knew what was coming, but I was still completely caught off guard by how much it got under my skin. It’s strange that this show doesn’t really have a reputation for being super fucked up when other shows like Madoka Magica do have that reputation but are significantly less disturbing.

i think the reason its so unknown is because people generally try to preserve the discovery of these themes when introducing it. i discovered utena all on my own by just stumbling upon it on a crunchyroll doomscroll through old animes ive never heard of. the impact of the message of rgu and the lasting impression it left on me was largely due to the fact that going in, i had NO MF IDEA. and while the show definitely tackles the deconstruction of the patriarchy like, from episode one, we dont really get the full extent of the show being truly disturbing until past the 20+ episode mark, which is also where lots of people tend to quit a show. which is a shame, because rgu's strongest moments are past that point. but i definitely agree-

"sword lesbians" doesnt even BEGIN to cover everything utena is about. it quite frankly does a disservice to the depth of the show and even hinders some people from truly grasping its true message. in another world, utena would be better known as "shoujo fairytale evangelion" than just "sword lesbians."

i feel like we kind of knew even before WaT that the contest of champions wouldn't end up being just a traditional duel, like there was always going to be some trick or secret or psychological game to it, not just two warriors beating the crap out of each other until one of them perishes. however i can't lie i kind of want to see the straightforward beating the crap out of each other until someone perishes version. having this 8000 year long war end with just brutal one on one violence is so simple of a plot that it kind of circles back around to being subversive. like yeah, rip each other's heads off, see how good you feel about winning after that.
