none of this âwell a thing of cinnamon is $8 and each has 200 grams so a gram is like $0.4 and divided by four itâs really only $0.1 per serving.â no. spices cost money. if I have to buy a new spice, thatâs more money. how much is one canister? thatâs the price.
did I have to buy a new pot for this? how much did that cost?
do I need multiple pots? is there complex timing? do I need to set aside an hour to prep? all that costs money.
when you get fast food, the total price is right there. we can talk about how that total price is artificially deflated due to the exploitation of labor and the industrialization of food, but the fact remains that a ten-piece chicken nuggets meal at burger king is like $6, and making them yourself costs a lot in buying a whole thing of chicken plus flour plus eggs plus spices plus frying oil (not even counting that a meal comes with a side and a drink).
(incidentally, this is an issue with any advice that calls for buying things in bulk because itâs cheaper overall. yes, it is objectively cheaper in the long run to buy the $15 thing of toilet paper at $1/roll than it is to buy the $10 thing of toilet paper for $1.50/roll. but when you only have $10, then youâre getting the $10 one, because thatâs whatâs cheaper to you.)

Being poor is expensive. And people want to overlook that, always, because itâs such an unpleasant fact.
Something that has always bothered me when trying to find new cheap meal ideas is seeing things that boast about meals only costing $5/serving. Even if I cut the recipe and make one serving, it still costs me a lot more than $5 to buy the ingredients. I can go to Walmart and get frozen chicken patties, hamburger buns & a bag of fries for $6 and change; if I eat one serving of each, thatâs a $0.62 meal (save for condiments).* I cannot ever consider over $2/serving to be cheap. Yet people continue to wonder why poor people end up unhealthy, and we have conservatives trying to ban those on food stamps from buying the food they can actually afford.
*I pay $3.98 for 10 servings of chicken patties, $1.58 for 11 servings of fries, and $0.67 for 8 servings of rolls. I did not include condiments bc Iâm too lazy to do more math.
