"Women are half the population of the world, yet, of studio releases, we are the only movie this summer to star women." — Director Paul Feig on his new movie, The Heat, in an interview with Kurt Andersen on Studio 360
I mean. It's true. And relevant. Isn't it?

What the movement for reproductive rights needs is for the faces of freedom to emerge from the captivity of shame.
There's just so much out there! I really was going to start working and doing other things, but this distracted me! I think it's a sign--these issues are ever prevalent and so important for us to understand!
Academic philosophy is an outlier within the humanities, with fewer than 20 percent of full-time faculty positions occupied by women. Commentator Tania Lombrozo discusses some recent findings that might help us understand why.
For good measure, and to more accurately and appropriately describe how prevalent these issues are............ here's this. I failed at naming 5. I had about 3...
How many can you name?

Imposing one’s dreams on another human being and wanting them to strictly fulfill them for you is a pretty selfish expectation and even a messed up form of ‘love’ (which is how people usually like to rationalize it). This stems from the perception that holds children as properties of parents and in particular, a woman’s identity only in relation to a man. It’s somewhat similar to indoctrinating kids into the parents’ religion at an impressionable age and closing the doors of curiosity, only even more violating. While one may be able to completely break free from religious beliefs at least on a mental level, the social costs of leaving an unsuccessful marriage in a patriarchal culture are many, especially if you’re a woman.

This piece resonates with me particularly because I am a woman of south asian origin. Again, thanks for sharing your stories. They mean so much.
Sometimes it’s tough being an ambitious or financially successful woman. It’s even more difficult when you have grown up in poverty, and have therefore had less opportunity and exposure on how to work systems to your advantage. And then add on the additional difficulty of being a woman of color who has to battle discrimination and stereotypes right along with sexism. It’s a jungle out there, and many of us have to kick, scratch and claw our way to the top.

I appreciate these stories and the women who share them. It's so important for us to stay strong and share our experiences so that we never feel alone. Not every experience is identical, nor should anyone claim they are. But parallels can be drawn and lessons can be learned. Sharing our stories is one of the simplest ways we can draw power from one another's negative experiences and morph them into more positive ones.
Thanks, Latina Fatale for your stories.
¡Viva la mujer!
Crystal Nguyen, a former inmate at Valley State Prison seen with son Neiko Nguyen, said she worked in the prison infirmary. She said she often heard the medical staff ask repeat offenders to agree to be sterilized. "I was like, 'Oh my God, that's not right,' " Nguyen recalls.
The Center for Investigative Reporting has uncovered that nearly 150 inmates from 2006-2010 were illegally sterilized without obtaining required state approval. Prison doctors and medical staff coerced incarcerated women into undergoing a tubal ligation surgery: a (more) permanent sterilization procedure.
