Jesus remained polite, but raised an eyebrow at the manās wording. It was an interesting goal to have so soon after a war, that was for sure. āI thought people making it to riches, and everyone elseĀ not,Ā was the whole reason we got into this Panem mess, wasnāt it?ā
He shrugged at the question, having not properly thought about it. āLong-term, Iām really not sure. Continue to help in any way I can, I guess. Keep recruiting, bring people in, make sure they're safe. Build community. I figure thereās a lot to do around here. Some people just arenāt in the right place to do it themselves.ā
āHey,ā Connor raised a hand in defence, totally understanding the manās concerns.Ā āI agree. My riches will be for superficial and personal reasonsĀ only. I donāt want power, I just want a hot tub. Iāll share it if I have to.ā That was a partial lie, but Connor didnāt want to appear aĀ totalĀ asshole.Ā āNothing wrong with wanting something nice for myself after all the shit Iāve dealt with.ā
āSo youāre one of the better guys. I can appreciate that. But youāre right, some of them are definitely⦠in a worse position than me. Anything I can do to helpĀ youĀ helpĀ them?ā He may be doing it for the wrong reasons, like having more time to flirt with Paul, but Connor was willing to help. Heād still be doing somethingĀ useful.Ā
āOh, no way, seriously? A lawyer? You must beĀ superĀ smart.ā She smiled, touching his arm for a moment. She hadnāt ever really valued education, despite her parents wanting her to excel. Social status had been far more important thus far. A study group, however, sounded like an opportunity to conquer both. āIt sounds brill. Do ya think I could come along someday? Iām crap at all that book stuff, really. Iād love the help.ā
āWell, I am. But itās a lot of hard work.ā Connor tended to cut corners, too, where he could. If he could charm information out of someone instead of researching it himself, he would. Which is exactly whatād make himĀ soĀ good at the job. āCome along to law studies?ā His eyebrows raised, glancing down awkwardly as her hand touched his arm. It was becoming clearer now that she was flirting, and he was unsure how to react. Guessing she was a few years younger than him, he didnāt want to hurt her feelings or be deemed insensitive by rejecting her, but he had to set boundaries. āI uh... Iām not sure thatās a good idea. Weāre pretty far in, and itās a lot of complicated jargon and case studies. If youāre looking for a study group, though, Iām sure thereās some more out there. I could help you find one. Ones that cover more than just law.ā
Jesus frowned at the reply, unsure how some grass and a bunch of screaming kids constituted as a worthwhileĀ view. That was until he met the strangerās eye again.Ā
Colour flooded his cheeks instantly, though he continued to debate with himself whether the look from the other man wasĀ reallyĀ what he thought it was. Despite his people skills, Jesus didnāt exactly have a talent for figuring that stuff out.Ā Shaking it off, he chose to ignore the comment altogether.
āNoted.ā The corner of his mouth tilted up at the sight of Connorās grin, appreciating the lightheartedness. As much as Jesus sympathised with everyoneās pain, moving into Alexandria had thrown him right in the middle of all the grief and recovery, so it was nice to hear someone joke around.Ā āYeah, well I suppose you're right. I hadn't really thought about it. 'Careers' were only reserved for certain district tributes for a very long time. Hard to imagine it as anything else.ā He frowned a little again.Ā āBut the worldās changing. Means we should, too.ā
Connor wasnāt used to people avoiding his flirtation, soĀ thatĀ was a first, but he didnāt react to it harshly. Perhaps he just hadnāt beenĀ obviousĀ enough, it had been a while since heād tried anything on. Unfortunately for Connor, one night stands in the middle of a war weren't common practice; not everyone used sex as a coping mechanism, unlike himself.
āNobodyās really had the chance to. But we gottaā get paid somehow, and if I can make it to riches, Iām gonnaā try.ā Not that heād ever suffered with poverty or starvation, he was technically from a career district, but it was nice to have aspirations and motivations. It was less about money, though, and more about pride, when he really considered it. He wanted to look good, to beĀ admired.Ā āItās about time something did. So what about you? What areĀ youĀ gonnaā do in thisĀ amazingĀ new world?ā
āI swear, they can be so selfish,ā she laughed again, attempting to follow along with his joke. āIām Chloe, by the way.ā Clearing her throat, she peered down at the papers heād spread across the table, holding her hair back to do so.Ā āSo.. whatcha writinā?ā
āConnor,ā he smiled politely in introduction, but somehow a formal handshake didnāt seem appropriate, so he left out that detail. āResearch. Iām studying law. I canāt imagine it being interesting to anyone other than me and my study group,ā he admitted with a shrug.
āAh,ā He smiled knowingly, glad his suspicions were correct.Ā āCanāt say Iām unfamiliar with that feeling. Iāve pulled a lot more all-nighters than any man should.ā Stepping forward, he held out a hand in greeting.Ā āIām Matt Murdock, ofĀ āNelson, Murdock and Pageā. Lawyers, if you couldnāt tell from the title. Hang in there, itās worth it in the end.ā
Connor nodded in agreement, the statement causing him to feelĀ tired. Heād been working a lot harder than heād realised, and his body was starting to fall behind. Sighing, he closed his text book, figuring he wouldnāt be able to concentrate anyway. Especially not now heād been given aĀ formalĀ introduction. His eyes widened in interest, and he stood up for the greeting, shaking Mattās hand.Ā āIām familiar with the name, considering youāre kind of the only lawyers left. Itās an honour to meet you, Matt. Iām Connor Walsh.ā He dropped his arm, eyes surveying the other lawyer, his attention now focused. He decided to turn on the charm, forĀ moreĀ reason than one.Ā āForgive me for saying, but when I heard of your practice, I didnāt expect such a handsome face. ā If you have some spare time, could I buy you a drink? Iād love to pick your brains on a few topics. No pressure though, I understand youāre busy. Youāre just the first person Iāve met here that could actually be helpful.ā Connor wanted a lot more than a few pointers, now heād finally noticed howĀ attractiveĀ Matt was, but decided to put professionalism first. For once.

The comment both surprised and amused her, and she stared at him momentarily from over the top of her sunglasses sheād put back into place, before bursting into laughter.Ā āPlease. If I were coming onto you, Harvard reject, youād know it. Iād never be so grosslyĀ casual.ā Still, she lead the way, flicking her hair over her shoulder as she called back to him.Ā āOh, and I think youāll find Iām everyoneās type. You just donāt know whatās good for you.ā
Smirking, she fell into step with him once heād caught up.Ā āEw. As if I would ever stoop to that level. Being polite and asking for what you want, and if they say no, taking it anyway, is what gets you results. Plus, being me and having money helps.ā She stopped suddenly, holding out a hand in introduction.Ā āIām Blair Waldorf, and yes, it is a pleasure to meet me."
āIām glad to hear that, andĀ noted.ā Connor was unable to say the same, heād made it known to every attractive male rebel that he was interested, although never for anything serious. āWell, Iām not everyone. But if I have a sudden change of heart and decide to start batting for the opposite sex, youāll be the first person Iāll call,ā he chuckled, beginning to follow behind her. He admired her confidence, even if it was misplaced in this instance.
āAnd that works on the townās leaders, too?ā Connor raised an eyebrow in acquisition, but it all made sense when she mentioned money. If you were rich, you could have anything; and they claimed money didnāt buy happiness.Ā āConnor Walsh,ā he replied, shaking her hand.Ā āI think you'll find the pleasure is all yours."
