He shrugged at the question, having not properly thought about it. “Long-term, I’m really not sure. Continue to help in any way I can, I guess. Keep recruiting, bring people in, make sure they're safe. Build community. I figure there’s a lot to do around here. Some people just aren’t in the right place to do it themselves.”

“So you’re one of the better guys. I can appreciate that. But you’re right, some of them are definitely… in a worse position than me. Anything I can do to help you help them?” He may be doing it for the wrong reasons, like having more time to flirt with Paul, but Connor was willing to help. He’d still be doing something useful. 

“Oh, no way, seriously? A lawyer? You must be super smart.” She smiled, touching his arm for a moment. She hadn’t ever really valued education, despite her parents wanting her to excel. Social status had been far more important thus far. A study group, however, sounded like an opportunity to conquer both. “It sounds brill. Do ya think I could come along someday? I’m crap at all that book stuff, really. I’d love the help.”

“Well, I am. But it’s a lot of hard work.” Connor tended to cut corners, too, where he could. If he could charm information out of someone instead of researching it himself, he would. Which is exactly what’d make him so good at the job. “Come along to law studies?” His eyebrows raised, glancing down awkwardly as her hand touched his arm. It was becoming clearer now that she was flirting, and he was unsure how to react. Guessing she was a few years younger than him, he didn’t want to hurt her feelings or be deemed insensitive by rejecting her, but he had to set boundaries. “I uh... I’m not sure that’s a good idea. We’re pretty far in, and it’s a lot of complicated jargon and case studies. If you’re looking for a study group, though, I’m sure there’s some more out there. I could help you find one. Ones that cover more than just law.”

“Noted.” The corner of his mouth tilted up at the sight of Connor’s grin, appreciating the lightheartedness. As much as Jesus sympathised with everyone’s pain, moving into Alexandria had thrown him right in the middle of all the grief and recovery, so it was nice to hear someone joke around. “Yeah, well I suppose you're right. I hadn't really thought about it. 'Careers' were only reserved for certain district tributes for a very long time. Hard to imagine it as anything else.” He frowned a little again. “But the world’s changing. Means we should, too.”

“I swear, they can be so selfish,” she laughed again, attempting to follow along with his joke. “I’m Chloe, by the way.” Clearing her throat, she peered down at the papers he’d spread across the table, holding her hair back to do so. “So.. whatcha writin’?”

“Connor,” he smiled politely in introduction, but somehow a formal handshake didn’t seem appropriate, so he left out that detail. “Research. I’m studying law. I can’t imagine it being interesting to anyone other than me and my study group,” he admitted with a shrug.

“Ah,” He smiled knowingly, glad his suspicions were correct. “Can’t say I’m unfamiliar with that feeling. I’ve pulled a lot more all-nighters than any man should.” Stepping forward, he held out a hand in greeting. “I’m Matt Murdock, of ‘Nelson, Murdock and Page’. Lawyers, if you couldn’t tell from the title. Hang in there, it’s worth it in the end.”
