He’d had his suspicions, every time Rogue had offered another memory of the person he’d lost. His brilliant Artificer, who could build anything from scratch with just crayons and half a can of Spam, whom he could always count on to catch him in free fall, no matter the odds; who knew him like he’d known him forever, who, in a pinch, could probably have saved the whole universe with a kettle and some string, who accepted both his strengths and his faults like precious, cherished gifts.
It took him a while, after the day that had to come, inevitably, to look at his reflection again. He had refused to acknowledge this new face, even though Rogue, brave as always, had begged him to take it and walk away from this. To add another image to the gallery of faces Rogue had loved so much, even if he was never going to see it himself.
And then he saw he had been right.
This new face had looked back at him from photographs before, brought alive by stories told with a smile and shining eyes.
Rogue had never talked about the day he lost him, and he had no idea what was waiting for him. All he knew was that he had ten more years to love him, another ten years to make him happy.
So he took the TARDIS on one more trip, kissed her console and her doors and parked her on a street corner, a strange little thing gathering dust. Who knew. He might even see her again.
Then he turned away and took a little walk, on the lucky day Rogue would never forget, to where he knew he would meet him for the first time.
