Medli of the Rito

It was easy enough to understand. In her way, anyway; inaccuracies could be resolved later. To be honest, it crossed her mind that they reminded her of her team — love, hope, faith, happiness. Someone calling other Precure goddesses was a little too unbelievable, so she buried that thought without saying a word.

“Did you want to look around the building? It’s not really interesting unless other people are around, but it could be nice to just see where you’re living.” It couldn’t really be counted on to have stayed boring since she looked last, but she preferred that over leading Medli into something awful…

“Do you believe in all of them, or just the goddesses?”

“That would be most appreciated!” she replies with a smile. “If it isn’t a bother for you to show me around...”

“And, yes, I believe in all of them. I have seen the power of the Wind Gods first hand, after all... why, once, that power was used to travel long distances via a cyclone!”

Oh, that made sense then! Link had never heard of a nice dragon before, but he didn’t think that Medli would lie about something so important. There’d be no point to lie, after all! Valoo must be a very nice dragon, if he was their guardian.

Link just smiled to her surprise- he imagined it must be surprising, to see a goron for the first time! He didn’t consider that the surprise might’ve been because he had become the goron, though. No, that was just silly. No way that would be shocking at all.

‘I’m a goron now.’ Yes, she could see that. ‘Darunia is the leader of the gorons in Hyrule. He’s super tough, but he really looks out for the other gorons. And he likes to dance a lot, for such a tough-looking guy.’

He continued to explain things about gorons, completely just not thinking about explaining why he was a goron. Again, that definitely couldn’t be the cause of her confusion. Not at all.

“I can see that...” Medli tries to say, as Link explains. She continues staring at him, unable to even remotely believe what she’s seeing.

Link continues to talk as if nothing is wrong, about the Gorons, but Medli is only barely listening. She’s too busy trying to figure out what kind of strange magic turned Link into one. She knows about controlling people, but she’s never heard of becoming them. Does it have something to do with that mask?

“Yes, but...”

She finally decides to just be forthright with it.

     ▲ While the girl seems to be of a clan the monarch has no knowledge of, that seems to have no bearing on her mannerisms. For all the cloaked brunette knows for the time being, she’s just an ordinary girl who is very polite and soft spoken… However, there is something about her that Zelda seems to think is a little different. Just why that is, however, she cannot say but it purely has to do with her general aura rather than her appearance.

     ❝ Yes, it is easy to become lost within this place even if you have been here for some time, ❞ she starts with a soft hum.

     ❝ But I am happy to be of help. What is it exactly you would like to ask first? I do not have all the answers, but I may be able to clear some things up. ❞

This woman is very polite, Medli thinks. Medli feels grateful that she has someone here who is willing to listen to her - she only hopes her questions make sense and don’t have answers so obvious as to annoy her.

“Well, first of all, I suppose I must ask... how did I get here? And, more importantly, how do I get home, to the Great Sea, to Dragon Roost Island? I have many responsibilities to tend to and it would not do for me to remain lost here...”

‘Why’s it called Dragon Roost? Why not Rito Roost?’ Well, it certainly wasn’t as catchy a name, but he didn’t get why dragon. She didn’t look like a dragon! ‘But that’s cool! In the forest, the Great Deku Tree was our guardian. He kept all of us safe. Is the Great Valoo nice? The Great Deku Tree was really nice.’

It was at least good to hear that the sea would have Guardian Deities, still. If the Rito came from Zora, perhaps Valoo would be related to Lord Jabu-Jabu? That would be good to hear.

‘Gorons are really nice! They’re rock people, they live on Death Mountain. They’re really big and strong and they like to roll around, and they eat rocks and can stand in lava! They look like this here.’

Link pulled out the goron mask, holding it up for her to see. After a couple seconds, he figured it’d be easier to just show her- so without any sort of warning he put the mask on, quickly changing shape into a goron.

‘Like this.’

She supposes that’s an understandable question. Why wouldn’t her island be called Rito Roost, if there was no dragon who lived on it? She smiles. “Oh, it is called that because it is the home of a dragon - the Great Valoo himself. It is his ‘roost.’ And the Great Valoo is very kind. He protects us and gives Rito children their wings from his scales.”

She nods along as Link explains what ‘Gorons’ are. She’s never seen a rock person, so she can only suppose that rock people wouldn’t have survived the flooding of Hyrule. But it’s odd - if they lived on a mountain, wouldn’t they have been spared?

Just as she’s about to speculate to that effect, Link puts on a mask without any warning whatsoever, and completely abruptly he turns into a very, very big, mostly naked, rock man. He’d be unrecognizable if he wasn’t wearing Link’s hat.

What could I improve on or should I work on more?*

Setsuna didn’t know if that was a good or bad similarity to have: two harp girls that had never played a harp. Her small magic harp was still worth the pride.

“I haven’t been to many worlds for long, so I haven’t heard about them. I’m interested in knowing more.” As she said it, her head gradually tilted. “You didn’t have a reason for going out into the hallway?”

Setsuna’s own reason was just more exploring in small areas she’d yet to visit. It was the sort of thing that could be rearranged if she was led off by something else for a while.

“About the Goddesses?” she says, smiling. “I’d love to. The Goddesses are said to represent the three aspects of the legendary Triforce - there is Din, who represents Power, Nayru, who represents Wisdom, and Farore, who represents Courage. Ancient myths say they created the Triforce. Very few people believe in the Goddesses these days, however - more people believe in the Gods of Wind, Zephos and Cyclos.”

He was glad that she wasn’t mad at him. Part of him had been worried that she would be, after he’d gotten mad. It would probably be a fair reaction, to be upset that someone got mad at you so easily.. she was very nice.

‘I’m sorry I got angry at you.’ He didn’t look at her face, ears hot with embarrassment as he apologized. ‘You’re nice. And I’d like to hear more about when you’re from. I can tell you more about my Hyrule.’

Now that he’d gotten through the initial shock, he had to admit that he was quite curious. And the more he’d know, the more prepared he’d be if he met someone else from the Great Sea.

“It’s quite alright, Link,” she says, not wanting him to be embarrassed further. “And I’d love to tell you more about where I’m from.”

“The Great Sea consists of a number of islands,” she explains, “only a few of which are lived on. I, myself, from an island known as Dragon Roost, where my people, the Rito, reside. We are blessed with the gift of flight, so many of us work as postmen or postwomen, but I am merely an attendant for the guardian of our island, the Great Valoo.”

▲ “I don’t mean to be rude, but could you be a member of the Rito tribe?”  Something about her biology was a little… different. She didn’t seem quite as bird-like as the Rito she knew, but couldn’t think of any other possibility.
