I think half of the horror of Willtresor on monty's side/pov is that Will (of his own will or not (hah double pun)), no matter how many dark sides Montresor shows to him, no matter how much he mistreats and abuses and uses Will, that man is Always gonna want him ....
... and that Monty, the moment he even GLANCES the possibility of will having a darker side/something more to him, CANNOT just bail out and run away no matter how much he Will Almost Certainly want to...
(case and point: ignoring will after the stag arc + will LITERALLY STANDING AND WAITING AT HIS DOOR LIKE A STALKER)
Yes exactly!! And I think this partially stems from Montresor’s subconscious need for control and to reaffirm the worldview he was raised with.
I also think this is partially why he acted the way he did in 160 & 162. In particular him not being able to accept the darker/stranger aspects of Will stems from him being unwilling to accept he may have been wrong about Will. That Will may not be as weak and helpless as he percieves Will to be, how he wants Will to be. Because 1) Will being weak reinforces the worldview he was raised in and means he doesn’t have to confront how he may be wrong/the fact that the way he’s treating Will is wrong (because Will is weak, and in Monty’s head a weak man deserves it, because it’s easier to think you failed than to accept you never deserved it, and yet it happened anyways). And 2) If Will is weak it means Montresor has complete control over the relationship and him, and in his head this is conflated with safety.
Hence him being unable to accept Will when he defies his expectations—it takes away his control and therefore his safety. So control must be regained, and Montresor has only been taught one way to assert control. If he can over power Will, if he can berate him and control his identity/behavior, if he can hurt Will without consequence, then that proves he’s in control. And that’s what he does, and it’s part of the reason I think he treats Will the way he does in 162. He has regained complete control of the dynamic, he has proven Will is still able to be dominated essentially, and now he has Will not only at his beck and call, but in a mentally vulnerable position due to the memory loss. In his mind, everything is how he should be, he has basically forced Will back into the way he “should” be.
Yet there is a part of him that wants Will to fight back, and to stand up for himself, and I think this is due to a couple reasons. Part of it is that he cares for Will (or at least the idea of Will, even if that means he can’t accept the way he is/still treats him terribly despite it), and I think part of it is seeing a younger version of himself in Will. Montresor seems to view strength as the only path to safety, and he wants to protect Will, so he views Will becoming strong as something necessary. Unfortunately his idea of strength and how to build it is extremely limited. And finally I think part of it comes back around to control, because there is one thing Montresor cannot seem to exert control over: how Will sees him. No matter what he does, Will will love him. It shatters his facade and seems to unsettle him greatly. Will’s subservience seems to disturb him yet he also actively enforces it, which is fascinating.
If Will resists his control or attempts to make a decision Montresor would not make for him, he tightens the leash and further exerts his control. He wants Will to push back, to resist, but only in ways that ultimately don’t matter. In a way he wants a performance of resistance or independence. But Will can’t seem to give him that, and worse Will continually, accidentally, disobeys him and breaks his control throwing him off once more.
Montresor truly has created a hell of his own making, his own personal nightmare (much like the way the narrator of William Wilson dooms himself but that’s a discussion for a different post). Will is a monster that cannot help but love him, even if it kills him, and Montresor is terrified but he also needs Will, and wants Will. He needs the love that Will will give him, he needs his forgiveness and belief, he needs someone willing to be destroyed and yet will not—cannot—leave.
it’s like someone else said in a recent post (I apologize but I don’t remember who) Will is perfect for Montresor, and all this is a consequence of his own actions. He has to deal with all the pain he’s caused made manifest and yet still loves him, and he can’t. Because deep down he is like a goat: a scared animal lashing out at the world, at every shadow, because when you feel yourself to be prey, everything is a threat.
[Also… man, they really are so Obsession coded aren’t they?]
I think in a way, and I don't know if you said it and apologies if you have, but yes Montresor is trapped in this now in a way that unnerves the power between them — but I think it adds another later that it looks like Montresor seems to be the only one aware of that? Like yeah obviously he is, but it's a very specific kind of awareness of the genre that tickles my neurons!
I talked a little about this w/ @colejevermore2 and it's hard to summarise that whole conversation, but one thing I remember saying that I think does a pretty okay job at my point is: "he tried to make it someone elses problem, then will's own problem, and then when it became HIS own problem he just goes and pretends its not a problem"
— even in the 160 plotline, when he confronted Will, it was all about placing the blame on Will, making it his fault for being a pale imitation.. but when it becomes clear to Montresor that there's no one to blame (except for maybe himself but that's a complex thought track), he quickly backpeddles and gives up his tirade, laying down which is utterly RICH. Guy who snarls and fights back any time at any hint of undermining has nothing left to do but give up when it becomes clear that he's only hurting an innocent person for no reason. Which sickens me to say, because it took Will literally having a breakdown for him to stop and not like. Any of the times that Will said to stop. UGHHH!
Also, very poignant that Will asks him who he is cuz he legitimately doesn't know when Montresor's been told all his life he's had the devil inside him and nothing else and he's accepted it as truth ❤️❤️
Also love the line "He needs the love that Will will give him, he needs his forgiveness and belief, he needs someone willing to be destroyed and yet will not—cannot—leave." – especially the forgiveness and belief part. Bigggg on the forgiveness part xx
I also ! Think it's important to get talk about Will and his side of this but that is a post for another time... 😅
first of all, I would absolutely love to see a post on your interpretation of Will’s situation, and second of all: ow ow ow in regards to “Which sickens me to say, because it took Will literally having a breakdown for him to stop and not like. Any of the times that Will said to stop. UGHHH!”
Because it’s true, Montresor continued on with his plan despite everything Will did. Even when he burned him with the lantern, attempting to prove he’s not human—he did not pause when it didn’t work. He did not stop when Will asked him to, not when he ran away, not when he pleaded with him. There was nothing Will could do to make Montresor stop, because he had made up his mind. These are just a couple instances in 160 of this happening.
Will does everything he can to not only communicate his fear and pain in this situation, hoping that Montresor will listen to him and stop, but he also tries to physically remove himself from the situation when that doesn’t work. And all this connects to a larger pattern of Montresor not really listening to Will, in my opinion.
We see this both in less dire circumstances such as not listening to Will’s advice, or stopping him from intervening when Ada manifested despite Will agreeing with Annabel that something should be done. But we also see it in more serious contexts such as this. I think a big part of it is Montresor projecting heavily onto Will, to a point that often blinds him to the reality of Will as a person, including his wants and needs. He often seems to sort of hear what he wants to hear when they interact, to the point where it doesn’t matter what Will says or does because Montresor is already convinced of an idea. It is only when his own internal resolve falters, or he changes his mind, that he stops. It is only when it no longer serves him/he can’t justify it.
Ughhhhhh they make me so sick /pos
okay!! I was considering writing an analysis of how sexuality is often linked to power with Montresor’s character, in particular looking at how scenes where Montresor is exerting/enjoying power often have some level of suggestive undertone or connotation (for example looking at the scene with Ada in the hallway, the whole entering Lenore’s mind thing, his attempt to murder Duke, and then most recently 160) specifically looking at what this might say about his character, and perhaps how it links to the themes of the comic.
However, before I dive into writing an analysis like this I wanted to check if others were interested in reading such an analysis, and if yall had anything you noticed.
Beautiful spectre. So stunning. She’s so :) pretty :)

Like the entirety and motivator for a lot of both of their interactions and shit is that it's all unrequited and not at all reciprocal, the whole power imbalance is fundamental to them im addicted to the toxic yaoi
Hiiiiiiiii would you ever draw mo^2 in your art?
I'm guessing this is Morella and Montresor...
This has been sitting in my drafts for a little bit, so I decided decided give it some colour ^^
Love their angel and demon parallels, very poignant! That Christmas comic also warms my heart. ♡♡
Hello Lunatic! I don’t know if you’re still doing Nevermore ship art
but if you are would you be interested in drawing Adabel (Ada x Annabel) they’re really cute together.
Of course Venus
