I'm finding it a bit hard to concentrate on my work, since I'm flying to the US for the first time next week and I'm just way to excited and worried to function.

how I take textbook notes
hello! so hereâs my 10k celebration post, lol. I never used to take notes on my textbook readings, but when I got into western civ, I knew that I needed to start doing so. otherwise, I canât remember what iâve read, which totally negates the point. hereâs how I like to do it:
1. I quickly skim through the reading, looking at subtitles, pictures, and length, so I know what to expect.
2. I read the textbook! not the most fun step, but itâs really unavoidable. I try to go quickly and not get too bogged down in the words, paying more attention to the big ideas.
3. I write shorthand notes about the chapter by subheading on sticky notes. basically I try to condense as much info as necessary and the small space makes me prioritize what I actually need to know.
4. I transfer the notes into my notebook for that class (sometimes at a later study session), expanding a bit and organizing it in a way that makes sense for me. this two-step process ensures iâm thinking critically about the material and how it should be organized, and using my own words.
5. I make them look nice! I use an outline system of bullets and dashes (I can go more into this later if anyone wants!) and then I underline key names with a highlighter and highlight the most important main idea(s). thatâs basically the extent of how fancy I make my notes, bc ya girl doesnât have the time.
so thatâs it! as I learn more about what works for me the system might change, especially since I am slow and this takes a while, but if I come up with something better to ease the pain of reading those excruciating western civ textbooks iâll let you know ;)
i post my study space every year because it changes drastically but for now this is my basic 2020 setup: a window near my desk, some semblance of organization, and always, always some coffee.
Studying at night while chamomile tea with lemon keeps me companyđ
I have my last final tomorrow and then i have a month free. I cant wait for tomorrow to come!!

my notes are messy, my brain is messier. it's midnight the night before an exam, and I'm cramming. some things never change.
things to do on sundays to recharge and make the upcoming week awesome
⢠clean ya room (just do it). also, check those pinterest boards you save for âone dayâ and actually go through them and draw some inspiration, even if you just end up rearranging the books on your bookshelf or putting some flowers from your garden in a mason jar on your desk. this is your home, make it feel like it is.
⢠do your laundry (also, donât forget your bed sheets). if youâre in the mood, look at next weekâs weather forecast and think about what youâre going to wear. go through your drawers, check the back of your closet. that hat you bought some time ago and forgot about because you didnât dare to wear it? well⌠new week, new you, right?Â
⢠call a friend/family member you havenât talked to in a while, tell them you miss them. tell them you love them. remember and appreciate that they are a part of your life even if it doesnât feel like it all the time.
⢠draw, paint, journal, write or make some music. something you know you love doing but ânever find the timeâ. sunday is âfinding-the-time dayâ. if youâre not feeling creative, read a book or watch your favorite show. or watch a new show. a scary show. a funny show. laugh as loud as you want. listen to music. listen to your favorite songs, or listen to new songs. even a new genre if you dare. turn the volume all the way up. take a second to consciously feel the music. you can always get up and dance. or sing. or both.
⢠the great, but still really effective classic: take a bath or a really long shower. if you have this special face or hair mask youâre saving up for a special occasion: congrats, youâre the special occasion today. use it. also, body lotion. we all know youâre going to be running late during the week and skip it one too many times. make yourself feel like the goddess you are.Â
⢠sit in silence for a few moments. listen to your breath. listen to your heartbeat. for the love of god PLEASE listen to your thoughts for once in your life. donât make them feel like they are wrong. or bothersome. they too just want to be heard once in a while. what are they trying to tell you? what could be soothing for them? be compassionate to yourself. itâs okay. you are okay. you are okay.
⢠think about things you can be grateful for next week. even if you feel like your life sucks atm, think about the small things you take for granted in a different way. for example: ânext week, i will have access to clean water. CLEAN. WATER. 844 million people donât have that.â or ânext week, my legs will take me wherever i want to go. not everybody has two fully functioning legs, so iâm lucky in that way.â youâre allowed to feel bad about your life, but youâre also allowed to feel good about things.Â
⢠if youâve stayed home most of the week, go out. go for a walk. go swimming. go to a party or dinner with friends. even if you feel like you donât need to see the outside world, chances are youâll feel great after you do. if you feel like youâve been running around all week, maybe youâd like to stay home today. put on your ugliest sweater, comfiest leggings, and fluffiest socks and curl up under a thousand blankets. you a sloth today and itâs okay.Â
⢠eat. i mean honestly: eat THE THING. i donât care if youâre on a diet. if thereâs something youâve been craving all week that has turned you into the veiny-neck-dude meme just trying to resist it: EAT IT. you deserve it. not because you worked out or ate salads or did well in school, but just because youâre a human and you love to eat and life is short and you should be allowed to eat yummy things. itâs okay. you wonât gain 5 pounds or lose your brain cells no matter how unhealthy it is, i promise.
⢠plan plan plan yo week. it doesnât matter if you use a planner, bullet journal, the calendar on your phone or the notes app: write everything down you have going on next week. appointments. events. coffee-dates. when are you going to the gym? what are you going to eat? (meal prep if necessary) also, create reminders on your phone for everything. âi wonât forget it!â is a sweet thought, but oh honey you will. schedule reminders for every event. let your phone remind you that you need to buy toilet paper when the store is nearby. schedule daily reminders for your medications. (once youâve done this it honestly feels like you just cleaned out 38GB of your brain, you simply donât have to worry about that anymore, space for more important info, like your new favorite pun to annoy everyone with)
⢠most importantly: listen to what your mind and your body need today and next week. daily life is so full of âshould-doâs that itâs important to find a healthy balance between the âshouldâs and the âneedâs. you will be much more productive, healthy and happy that way. nobody knows you better than you do, take advantage of that and plan accordingly.

Results Day Tips
So UK A level results day is tomorrow and since I got a few war flashbacks to last year I thought Iâd give anyone going through it (or other results days ofc) a few tips
You donât have to sleep -Â Obviously, if you can sleep before results day then please do! Getting a good nightâs rest will help you feel refreshed and optimistic the next morning. But no everyone can do this, and lying for hours and hours in your bed just worrying about the next day is going to do more harm than good. Itâs kind of a tradition in my family that on the night before results day the person getting them will stay up the whole night completing a video game. Iâm not really a video game person, but I adore the original spyros and theyâre simple enough that I donât get frustrated and quit but engaging enough that I can distract myself for nearly the entire night with it. It meant I was kind of shattered for results day, but as someone who has an unfortunate habit of pulling all nighters anyways, it wasnât much of an issue for me. So my advice would be that if you really canât sleep, find something to do and distract you.
Know what will work best for you -Â This is pretty A Level specific, but most people I know checked UCAS first and then went and got their results from school. I knew this would just panic me, though, because UCAS would say if I got in or was rejected, but it wouldnât tell me my grades. At this point I was kind of certain I hadnât gotten into my firm, and I didnât want to see that and then panic wondering just how bad they were. So I went into school, got my results, and then looked at UCAS, but knowing which one will work best for you is super important.
That being said, unis are often lenient -Â I checked my grades, saw that Iâd missed both my firm and insurance and assumed I would be going through clearing, checked UCAS, and just about died in shock. My firm uni accepted me even though Iâd missed my grades by a fairly long way. So if you check your grades and miss them, donât panic. Even if neither of the unis you firmed/insured accept you, there are thousands of places through clearing, and to so many good unis. Remember that it is in their best interest to fill up the places on each course, because thatâs a massive amount of money for them.
Gap years are also not a bad thing -Â People I know who missed their grades and so took a gap year now swear by them. It can be a really great opportunity to travel or work and get some money for uni or basically just give yourself a break now that youâve finished school, so donât feel like youâre a failure if you take one because youâll end up with way more experiences than you ever would have otherwise. And of course soo many people take them no matter what their grades are.
Make sure you eat + drink plenty -Â With all the nerves and excitement, itâs easy to skip breakfast and forget to eat otherwise. Once everythingâs calmed down a bit, take some time to grab a snack and a coffee or some water because such a stressful day takes a lot of energy and you need to make sure you donât feel dizzy or anything.
Donât pressure people into talking about their results - and donât feel like you have to talk to anyone about yours. Some people will really want to share theirs and thatâs great!! But be mindful of other people, and make sure you donât come across like youâre rubbing it in someoneâs face. Make sure to provide comfort for those who need it, and make sure you have people you can turn to if you need it. Itâs perfectly valid to not want to say what you got, and you donât owe anyone an explanation.
Know that everything will be okay - You might get amazing results. You might totally screw everything up. But know matter what, you will get through it and in the end it will end up so so good, you just have to persevere. Please donât give up on any dreams, just take a breath, re evaluate, and find out what your next steps need to be. I believe in you!!
Good luck to everyone getting results, Iâm so proud of you all just for getting to this point and Iâm so excited for what youâre gonna do in the future đđ

Nothing, everything, anything, something: if you have nothing, then you have everything, because you have the freedom to do anything, without the fear of losing something.
10 Things I Wish I Knew Before University
You are going to feel like dropping out. I would say to stick it out for the first year and sit for finals. If you get a good grade for your finals, that could really give your confidence a boost and motivate you to keep going. And then, if you still feel like dropping out or changing majors, you should do as much research as possible.
Feeling pressured to do more things. During my first year, I said yes to everythingâeven things that I didnât feel like doing. I felt like if I didnât, Iâd be missing out on something really important or fun. FOMO, basically. However, more often than not, I wasnât missing much and these opportunities will arise again very soon.
Buying too many unnecessary things. I bought so many stationery and notebooks before I started uni in hopes that they would motivate me to study. I ended up not using even half of them my first year. At least, Iâd be set for supplies until I graduate.
Revising in uni is not the same as revising in high school. I used to think I could study last minute for a test, like I did in high school. I learned the hard way that that wasnât the case at all. Now, I review the topics after every lecture. The key is to keep up because all those lectures are going to pile up really fast.
Past papers are your new best friend. I find that professors have their favourite questions that they like to give out. During finals, they might even use the same exact questions as they did in tests!
Failing/Getting a low grade in a test isnât going to ruin your life. I once got so caught up on that one test. But luckily during finals, I snapped out of it and just tried my best. My final grade wasnât too bad. You live and you learn.
Wear whatever you want (as long as it doesnât get you in trouble). When I wear a hoodie and sweatpants, I get comments that I look like I just rolled out of bed (which I did, duh). And when I have really nice makeup on and do my hair, Iâm trying to impress someone. I think people just like to run their mouth and itâs nothing personal, so you shouldnât care what they say anyway.Â
Keep in touch with friends outside your university. It can really come in handy during times when you really have to vent about someone in your classes. They can also help you keep grounded and have a different perspective.
You donât have to love the library. Iâm the kind of girl who studies lying on her stomach on the bed with papers and books surrounding me and my cat stepping on them occasionally. I think the library is too quiet and public for me. And if youâre the same way and prefer the cafe or elsewhere, then thatâs okay too. The goal here is that you get your studying done.
Stay healthy. Whenever itâs near finals, I would abandon every other responsibility except studying. I would stop eating healthy and quit exercising, all in the name of making time to study. But they should go hand-in-hand with studying and not one or the other. I find that the better I take care of myself, the better my grades are. You should also get enough sleepâthis, I never fail to do.
