How to Never Fall Behind in Classes
Alternatively titled: How to Use Your Planner or How Organization and Discipline Will Get You Better Grades
This is my full guide on how to use your planner effectively and make sure that you are never missing deadlines or falling behind in classwork and homework. This is definitely more about the university level and works best with a dated planner, rather than a bullet journal. Letโs get started!ย
Get all of your syllabi together and write down dates. Go through one class at a time and mark down all of your major tests and assignment due dates. I recommend putting these dates into the monthly and weekly views, and perhaps coming up with a symbol or other indicator that tells you they are of utmost importance.ย
Make a weekly schedule of when to complete readings and do a weekly review of notes.ย Instead of trying to randomly decide when to do these things, assign a date for each task for each class. If you have a tutorial on Tuesday, do the assigned readings for it every Wednesday. I recommend scheduling one to two weekly tasks per day, and to leave a few days open, whether it be weekends or days when you have a lot of classes.
Make a master list of assignments.ย I find that sometimes, even having due dates in the calendar view isnโt enough, and they can still sneak up on you. The master list will be a good place to double check if you have any deadlines approaching easily.ย
In the week or so before a due date, create a checklist of smaller tasks needed to complete the assignment. Set individual due dates for each smaller task by working backwards from the due date. Smaller tasks may include finding sources, making an outline, writing a rough draft, and editing and adding references to create a final copy. Write the smaller tasks into your daily to-do list.ย
You can also do this with studying for tests, but the checklist would look slightly different. You could either sort by study method (first do flashcards, then do essay outlines, etc.) or sort by the topics you need to study.ย
Stick to the schedule you have made. Obviously, if something comes up and you need to move your to-do list around, do so! But if you arenโt doing anything and you see readings on your list of daily tasks.. do them. Having the plan set out like this makes it easier for you to remain disciplined.ย
Why use this method?ย
By creating a schedule for repeated weekly tasks like completing readings, you make sure that you canโt repeatedly push off smaller tasks until you are weeks behind. I donโt think it is very reliable to just will yourself to do readings, or to keep up with them without tracking it.ย
By writing down all of your due dates, you will never be shocked to find out something is due the night before. You will know and you will be prepared.ย
By creating smaller checklists of tasks to complete before a major test or assignment, you will never find yourself in a situation where you have an essay due in a few days and havenโt even started. You will be following a timeline and making sure you donโt have to rush.
I know this system may seem rigorous, but planning is the only way you can keep on top of your workload in university! Falling behind is a lot harder if you are organized and disciplined, and being on top of your workload will help you a lot when it comes to exam timesโฆ no cramming and all-nighters if you have been consistent all semester!ย

โFew come within the compass of my curse wherein I did not some notorious illโย
For my close analysis draft essay of a Shakespearean speech, I chose the blood curdling declaration from Aaron in Titus Andronicus of his only regret being he could not do more evil than he already did. I find this speech fascinating and chilling. I love that in the 19th century this play disturbed and shocked people so much they did not want to associate it with Shakespeare, and so tried to shift the blame on Marlowe insteadโฆ

It has been a chaotic week, I really shouldnโt have put all my financial aid work to last minute... Also, is anyone else studying organic chem and just finding it so boring?? Itโs the first time, I truly donโt like a chem topic

How to strengthen your brain outside of school:
Maybe youโre not in school anymore, or youโre taking a gap year to save for school and youโre worried about keeping your brain fast and not getting too lazy. Well, here are a few helpful ways to make sure that you keep thinking:
Read books daily. Always have a book on the go. Reading keeps your brain active and itโs a cathartic activity. If youโre feeling up to it, read self-improvement books, or informative books.
Watch Ted Talks. Not only are these videos filled with so much great information, they are also inspiring.
Think about where you want to be in the future and start preparing for that. If this means that you need to spend hours of your life prepping the perfect resume so you can get a job or internship that takes you a step closer, then so be it. If you want to start your own business Iโd highly recommend that you research the hell out of entrepreneurship.ย
Exercise. Exercise is important for the brain. It also keeps you happy, which in turn keeps you motivated.
Expand your vocabulary. Write down the words you donโt know in books and look them up, keep them on flashcards and memorize them. Big vocabularies are so important and they do come in handy.
Learn a new language. You can do this for free on apps like Duolingo or you can actually go and take courses somewhere. This could help you so much if you plan on doing University abroad or even getting a job there.
Watch documentaries. Netflix can currently teach you about the Vietnam war, World War II, the Earth, the global food trade etc. Learn.ย
Watch the news, listen to it or read about it. Itโs important that we know whatโs happening right now and memes can distract us, but try to be informed. Maybe you can make a difference.
Learn a new skill. Itโs time to learn something youโve always wanted to, whether itโs cooking, sewing, art, photography, yoga, mechanics etc. Teach yourself.
Do online classes to boost your grades for University.ย
Do online classes because youโre curious. Donโt stifle your curiosity. Curiosity is an asset.
Challenge yourself to do one productive thing every day. Donโt let yourself go to bed without mental stimulation for the day.

i hope you guys had a wonderful start into the new year!
unfortunately i have a lot of exams this month so i can't just relax for all of winter break, like i'd like to. but, starting to study earlier for exams and not procrastinating so often is kind of a new year's resolution of mine and i think today i did quite good on that. i did some summaries and a few practice problems for three upcoming exams.
hope your day is going well!
