Itâs late. How late in the night, Cody doesnât know. He had woken up in the middle of the night to a quiet house and a parched throat. He had slid out of his bed and opened his door, peeking out into the hallway and the room opposite his.
Maxâs door is open. His room is dark and empty. As expected, really.
Cody creeps carefully past their fatherâs bedroom, where rhythmic, rumbling snores emanate from within, crossing the hallway quickly. He pads down the stairs on tiptoe in his socks, rubbing at his tired eyes, and turns the corner into the large kitchen.
The cold tile bleeds through his socks, and he moves as slowly as possible to avoid making noise. He opens the cabinet and pulls out a simple glass cup, lowering it to the faucet and turning it on, watching water spill into it before he turns it off.
The opening and closing of a door makes Cody jump. He whips around with wide eyes, worried heâd awoken his father, before he sees the broad shadow of his older brother stumbling through the front door, clearly inebriated and disoriented, which is odd, as usually he comes home from late parties freshly fucked and ego enlarged.
Cody glances at the time on the microwave that reads 2:04 a.m. âYouâre home early,â he deadpans quietly, turning back to his cup, blissfully unaware of Maxâs anxiety or the night that heâs had. âRough party? Got in a fight with someone there, or something?â
@cody-jagerman
He didn't answer his questions. Instead, he headed straight for the fridge. He opened it and grabbed a bottle of soda, then started to drink.
When he was done he wiped his mouth with the sleeve of his letterman and put the bottle back in the fridge.
"What I do is not your business." He said, slurring his words.
Cody lifts his hands in mock surrender. He watches his brother move about the kitchen, wrinkling his nose at the smell of alcohol wafting off of him. âRight,â he mutters, judging him with a very conspicuous eye.
He can see Maxâs eyes are red-rimmedâthey get that way when heâs been crying. âYou sure nothing happened?â Cody lifts his cup to his lips, âdidnât get hurt or anything? Did someone say something to you?â
"No. And even if anything happened I wouldn't tell ya."
He opened a cabinet and took out a bag of chips, and he sat at the table to eat some of them. He had thrown up like two times during the evening, and his stomach felt empty apart from the alcohol.
He was strangely silent, and he seemed lost in thought. The only sounds in the kitchen were the buzz of electricity and Max occasionally crunching on his chips.
His clothes, apart from the letterman, were dirty. Like he sat on the ground or something like that.
âUhâŚhuh,â Cody frowns. He slowly casts his eyes over Maxâs body, scrutinizing his dirty clothes. âYou look like you were spat from a grave,â he mutters.
Stifling a yawn into his elbow, he keeps his eye on Max, worry weighing his heart down. He can tell somethingâs wrong, but theyâve never been the type of siblings to be vulnerable with each other. He doesnât know what to do.
What heâd like to do is ignore Max, go upstairs, go back to sleep, and pretend nothing ever happened, but something stubborn gnaws at his stomach. He tightens his grip on his cup and hesitantly walks to sit across from Max, watching him eat
"So what? It's not like they're your clothes." He replied, rolling his eyes.
He ignored him as he sat across from him, munching on his chips as if nothing was wrong.
Cody is still. âYou got me there,â is all he says. This is going nowhere, as per usual, but he feels uneasy. Thereâs an aura of discomfort and panic he can feel but cant quite pinpoint from Max. He doesnât know if the right thing to do would be to pry or not.
He turns around in his chair and begins to slide off of it. âIâm going back upstairs. Heâs asleep. See youâŚin the morningâŚâ
"Ok." He simply said without looking at him.
He followed him upstairs after a while. He went into his bedroom and changed into a pair of shorts to sleep in. He didn't feel like taking a shower, he'd do that in the morning. He plopped down on the bed in complete darkness, and closed his eyes. He laid there for a bit, tossing and turning and trying to fall asleep. Except he couldn't. He was still thinking about what happened a few hours before.
He got up with a sigh, and silently walked to Cody's door. After thinking about it for a few seconds, he knocked.
"Hey. You." He murmured.
Itâs silent for a while. A pretty long while, until the knob slowly turns, and Cody tentatively pulls the door open with a creak, peeking through the crack.
Cody glowers up at Max. A tired scowl, less hateful and more exasperated. âYes?â
"...Can I stay here tonight?" He mumbled as his eyes avoided Cody's he was clearly embarrassed as he asked.
He just needed some company. He needed to know someone was sleeping beside him. As soon as he closed his eyes he saw that thing's giant mouth again...and after what it told him he was afraid of dreaming about his mother, too.
Cody stared at Max, clearly not expecting the request. They havenât had a sleepover in years. Not after that certain conversation with their father about certain things all those years ago. After that day, Cody was convinced Max would want nothing to do with him anymore, and convinced himself he reciprocated that mindset. So what is this? Is Max fucking with him? Trying to get a reaction out of him? Mocking him? This couldnât possibly be genuine, right? Theyâre supposed to be Jägermans. Strong, mean, powerful. Siblings who hate each other and will do so forever. This is just a favor. Of course. Nothing more, nothing less. Max hates Cody, and Cody hates Max. Something shitty happened to him tonight, so he just needsâŚhe needsâŚ
Cody doesnât know. It hurts his heart a little to know Max is distressed and not know how to help. Itâs unfamiliar to him, and he hates it.
Cody pulls the door open wider and steps back to let Max in. He tries to be snippish, he tries to make a petty jab, by God, he tries his best to make it look like the last thing he wants is to sit beside his big brother again, to look at him without glaring, to talk without insults and know heâs at peace.
âSure,â he breathes instead, too gently, far too excitedly than he meant it. He digs his fingernails into his palm to reprimand himself. âSure, if youâif you want.â
He nodded and muttered a soft "Thanks" before entering the room. He laid down on the floor next to Cody's bed: he was aware of his size, and didn't wanna kick him off the bed accidentally.
"Uhm-" he started, before Cody could turn off the light. "You still have that- that night light? Don't feel like being in the dark tonight. Yeah." He said quickly, his voice shaky and his cheeks slightly red in shame.
âYeah, no, I do,â Cody nods, scurrying to the corner to flick on the small moon-shaped night light on the wall. The gentle orange glow pulses against the wall, and Cody silently closes his door.
He turns to Max on the floor, raising an eyebrow at the position. He pads to his bed and sits on the edge of it, socked feet not reaching the floor. He looks down at Max. âIt looks cold down there,â he whispers. He scoots on his bed and pulls the covers down, hugging his knees to his chest. âYou can lie up here, if itâll make you feel better. We donât hafta talk if you donât want.â
He stays on the floor for a couple minutes, before getting up and silently laying beside Cody. He laid on his side with his back facing the brother, and he stared at the orange glow of the nightlight. He brought the soft blanket up to his shoulders, trying to be as covered as possible, and curled up on the mattress. His mind was racing, thinking about the stuff he went through that night. The party, Caspian's house, The Lords...Nibbly.
He pulled the blanket over his face, his hands shaking.
"Mom..." He mumbled in a soft voice.
Cody sits up. He stares at Max, still and quiet, trying to figure out if heâd just imagined what he heard or not. He squints in the dim light, eyes fixed on the back of Maxâs head. Something sad pricks his heart.
âWhat did you say?â He mumbles carefully.
He turned around quickly when he heard his voice: he didn't know he was still awake. Max's cheeks were wet, meaning he had been crying.
"I- nothing. Go to sleep." His voice was shaking. He turned away from Cody again, crossing his arms over his chest.
Cody tries to move to see Maxâs face in the dark, catching sight of the reflective wetness on his face. Tears.
âBullshit, itâs nothing, Max,â Cody mutters. âListen, IâI know weâre not the kind of family whoâŚyâknowâŚtalks things out with each otherâŚbut Iâm gonna be honest, man, this?â He gestures vaguely at Max. âIs kinda scaring me. Why did you call for her?â
"It's not your business. Go to sleep" He mumbled again.
After a few moments of silence he spoke again, without facing his brother.
"Mom was eaten by this weird being with a giant mouth. I met it." His grip on the blanket tightened. Talking to Cody about it felt unexpectedly helpful. Maybe because he had been through the loss of their mom too. He could understand, to a certain extent.
"I know you're not gonna believe me. This fucking nerd at school summoned those things and they talked to us and the pink one told me that stuff- and- and it wants me, too-" he hid his head with the blanket, visibly shaking. He was silently sobbing.
"Mom was fucking eaten by a monster!"
Cody is still. The headboard shakes slightly with every sob wrenching Maxâs body, the only sound in the otherwise silent room.
Cody was expecting anything but this. Their motherâs disappearance is a very touchy subject, and had been one of the catalysts for the death of Max and Codyâs sibling relationship early on in their childhood. To even mention her name in this house is a death sentence brought onto you by their father, so to be so distraught over it, to be so open about it nowâŚ
Eaten? By a weird being with a giant mouth? Summoned by a nerd at school? This makes zero sense to Cody, who has virtually no life outside of home and school. He lifts a hand to his temple, trying to work it out. Had Max had a nightmare? Gotten too drunk and hallucinated? Had he messed with drugs? Cody doesnât know what to believe. He hasnât heard of such beings before. If their mother had been eaten, he would expect it be by some large animal like a bear or a mountain lion. NotâŚ
Cody hesitates. He doesnât know what to do. If he tells Max outright he has no idea what heâs talking about, Max might explode and retreat, erasing any progress theyâve made tonight. If Cody says he believes him, he might unknowingly be enabling a harmful delusion Max had somehow gotten himself into, and be the reason Max spirals.Â
He doesnât know what to do. What would make it better? What would calm Max down?
What does Max need from him?
Company, Cody recalls Max asking for an hour ago, âdonât feel like being in the dark tonight.â âIt wants me, too.â
Maybe Max doesnât need words at all.Â
Cody scoots closer to Max, watching his shoulders shake and listening to him weep. Seeing his powerful, scary big brother now so helpless, so afraid, makes him feel horrible. He fiddles insecurely with his fingers. âOkay,â he mumbles. âOkay. The thing that ate mom talked to you. And it wants you, too. We canâŚtry to figure out what to do about that later. I promise weâll figure it out. Together, if you want. Iâll help you. InâŚin the meantimeâŚâ
Cody takes a deep breath. ââŚdoâŚyou want a hug?â
Itâs late. How late in the night, Cody doesnât know. He had woken up in the middle of the night to a quiet house and a parched throat. He had slid out of his bed and opened his door, peeking out into the hallway and the room opposite his.

âUhâŚhuh,â Cody frowns.

[Caspian is sitting outside the school, when he spots Cody walking past. He runs up to match his pace, and taps his shoulder.]
âHey, man. Is⌠is your brother doing ok?â
(@retrotwins2003)
Cody whips around at the tap, eyes meeting an unfamiliar face. Oh, no. Waitâhe knows who this is.
Cody pulls off his headphones and lets them dangle from his neck. âHeâs alright,â he says carefully. âAbout as alright as he ever is, anyhow. Why?â
âJust wondering. He hasnât stuffed me in a locker recently, so⌠figured something was off.â
âAh. Right.â Cody looks away. âUm. He came home last night later than usual. He was in a mood. HeâŚdid talk to me a bit about it, which was odd, because we never talk about anything to each other, but he was really shaken.â
âWhat did he say?â
âNot much. He said he was scared and his clothes were dirty as shit. Just wanted company.â He shrugs. âI didnât pry. I couldnât. DidâŚâ he glances upwards at Caspian, ââŚsomething happen?â
âI donât think I should say anything about it.â
âIs it something I should worry about?â
âIf there is, Iâll let you know immediately.â
Cody wrinkles his nose. âAlright,â he mutters, weirded out. âIâll prepare myself, then.â
âI⌠Iâm sorry I canât tell you more. Itâs just really not my place to say.â
Confusion morphs into irritation. Then that of suspicion. Codyâs eye twitches, and he clenches his jaw as his thoughts radicalize. âListen, man, if you want something freaky with Max, it was a bad idea to talk to his brother about it. If youâre hooking him up with some LSD shit, leave me out of it.â
Cody aggressively pulls his backpack strap over his shoulder. âGo find some other sucker to rope into drugs.â
âHold on, I would never try to get anyone to do drugs. Where did that come from?â
âWho knows? All kinds of lunatics in this school. Iâm just inclined to believe you have something to do with the state Max was in last night, and Iâd be damned if I just turned a blind eye to something weird happening under my nose. And if he isnât slamming you into lockers lately, then Iâm wondering if something happened between you two to initiate that behavior. Now excuse me,â Cody turns a sharp corner, slamming his shoulder against a locker in the process, âIâll tell you if somethingâs off.â
