Sex scene as character study is so good. What is your relationship to your body? What is your relationship to your partner? What lessons have you absorbed from the culture about yourself as a sexual being? How much do you have to trust someone before being comfortable with intimacy? What fears and insecurities come to the fore for you when you take your clothes off? It's so good.
How do they communicate? How do they expect others to communicate? How well do they understand their body and their own capacity for pleasure? What do they tend to do to make their partner feel comfortable? How comfortable are they showing emotion in front of others? How much insight do they have into what their own emotions mean and are connected to? What are they focused on during the encounter? How conscious are they of exchanges of power and vulnerability? very very very good
People sneer at sex scenes in fiction as pointless prurient fluff but this is a really intimate view of characters at the extremes of their interactions, their desires, their fears, their revelations and concealments, and the meat of their interactions and relationships. You can do so much with it!
Sex scenes done well are like action scenes. There should be pauses in action, negotiation, turnabouts, revelation. Backstory is included, how does past trauma affect how a character wishes their body to be celebrated? How does their experiences together affect how they want to treat their lover's body?

bite down; in AAVE (African American Vernacular English) and broader hip-hop slang means to bear the pain, push through a difficult situation, or keep going despite hardship. (via google search)
an original southern HBCU horror story. feat. original characters who may or may not be *****/*****/**** coded. your girl is finally starting her author journey! i appreciate & love y'all so much.
what is bite down?
A love letter to the American South, to Millennials, to the HBCUs, to black horror stories, to candy paint and big rims, to grillz and gold teeth, to knotless braids and pre-stretched hair, to locs and kinks and coils, to waves and fades, to black voting power, to the Willie Maes and Gradys, to the subs and Black Ice car fresheners, to beatin’ down the block, to the cookouts, to the uncs and aunties, to hoodoo, to the sea, to our ancestors. To my home, South Carolina. Most of all, love to you, fellow Southern Black American.

It’s lonely, being invisible to everyone until they care for you. But it does give you an excellent advantage at sneaking.
But on the train, everything starts to go wrong. Four passengers overhear her and discover her presence. A strange man somehow sees her immediately. The cargo is more precious than she could’ve imagined, and there’s someone aboard who will stop at nothing to get it before the train arrives…

It’s a dangerous life, always hiding from the authorities, always staying below the radar, but like previously stated, there isn’t anything they can’t do.
Unfortunately, once they meet Sepia Windsor along with his crazy scheme, the authorities start cropping up everywhere. The crew didn’t even agree to help the kid, but before they know it, they’re recruiting other dubious help, landing themselves in the biggest prison in the galaxy, and becoming the top wanted criminals in the whole universe. And the so called treasure may not even be real. They are NOT getting paid enough for this; if they survive, Jax is going to kill that Sepia kid. Or maybe himself. He’s not particular.

My rational brain: you really should be focusing on your uni work... it's kind of important
The goblin rubbing its grubby little hands together and scheming in the shadows of my mind: BUT YOU HAVEN'T FLESHED OUT HOW THEY GET OFF THE ISLAND!! WHAT IF YOU LOSE MOTIVATION AND THEY GET STUCK THERE FOREVER!!!
My rational brain: We just overcame the writer's block. We brought a new notebook and everything. IT HAS STARS ON IT!
The goblin: NOPE, you're going to lose it.
As you can see, chapter 4 of 'The Sea Gives' is coming along smoothly.
Update: the goblin won.

basically if someone were to come to your inbox and ask, "which of your fics do you recommend i read first?" what would you tell them?
Tessellate part 1 and 2!! It’s a platonic love story between reader and Gwen Stacy that features a b plot romance with reader and Peter Parker
Storm Warning feels very personal to me and it’s a fic of Arvin Russell experiencing his first hurricane season
so pretty it hurts is a coming of grown age, realizing your sexuality later in life fic with Michelle Jones
And Life’s Perfect Ache which was a Much Ado About Nothing inspired fic with Paul Atreides and an OC that also feels pretty foundational to my writing

The lovely @indecentpause tagged me a long time ago -- thank you! I'm going to pull these from Invisible Girl today :D
A line about joy:
Velia held [Antonio's] gaze. She wasn’t sure if that was something she was supposed to thank him for, or smile about, or ignore. She got the sense it didn’t matter if she was uncertain, if she didn’t say a word. His gaze softened, seemed happy to just stay there, rich with the sight of her.
A line about family:
Velia studied [Fynn], studied the scaffolding of him; saw the strong spine of the boy who’d left his family, lost his father, his faith and his hope, and yet was still steely strong beneath.
A line about fear:
The thought of Fynn gone, extinguished, was a new and different fear, not the all-gripping grief of Antonio, unlike the gasping horror for Paris or Lewis. The thought bothered her just as much, even if he wouldn’t be missed. He would be missed.
A line that sounds ridiculous out of context:
“But trains don’t have brains,” Antonio reasoned reasonably. “So, that’s not true, of course.”
A wildcard line (any line you're in the mood to share!):
“I’m not miserable,” Antonio said, and then yelped as Crowley swung for him. He lurched to one side, but ran out of room, and wasn’t able to duck quick enough. Crowley’s uppercut smashed him in the face, and down he tumbled, landing at Lewis’s feet.
I'll tag @winterandwords @author-a-holmes @zmwrites @chayscribbles @memento-morri-writes and anyone else who read this :)
Your lines: A line involving blinking A line about the sea A line with some yearning A line that mentions the color blue A line that's screamed
I am of the “anyone else who reads this” crowd 🙋🏽♀️ these are all from different WIPs!!
A line involving blinking— from the next part of Sunlight
“Does it look weird? Am I wearing it wrong?”
Tsu’tey blinked hard then forced his gaze away, forced his whole body to turn. “I will forage.” He declared, his voice tight as it croaked from his throat.
If he didn’t get a hold on himself, he may walk straight off a cliff this time.
A line about the sea— from a wip called Bending Light with a lighthouse keeper!reader
As your siblings chose higher learning or marriage, you turned to the sea.
A line with some yearning— from the next part of Pour Some Sugar On Me
“That why you stole from me?”
He shrugged carelessly. “I got an earring, you got my heart. I don’t think that’s too bad a trade. Didn’t you see it? Left it, still beating, on your pillow and everything.”
A line that mentions the color blue— a prequel for Life’s Perfect Ache
But on Enfiel, it was clear he didn’t see much of the sun. He wasn’t technically shirtless, but he felt like it, the thin linen sheet of steel blue pinned to his shoulder and black linen slacks that covered but didn’t cling to his legs.
A line that's screamed— From my wip Not Broken, Just Bent
Ninon’s voice and the sloshing of water came from inside the locked room. “But Mercury is in retrograde!”
“My uterus is in retrograde!!” The thirteen year old roared back.

Fanfic is a great way to practice self-indulgence while writing. It doesn’t even have to be good, it just exists purely for your pleasure, be a little freak about it. Worry about quality and what other people think when it comes to works you intend to publish in a formal setting
FANFIC POLL
I was discussing with some fandom friends how fanfic culture seems to have shifted from mostly comments to silent reading (though I'm very blessed with ya'll on TRT, thank you). And that makes me wonder what the reason is - I've seen a lot of theories and people asking that question but I figured I'd poke ya'll and see what I find.
This question is mostly directed towards those that never comment on a fanfic or rarely comment on a fanfic. If you usually comment or always comment (thank you!), you're totally good on this one.
To fanfic readers who do not comment, why don't you comment?
Commenting makes me anxious/stressed
I'm too tired to comment
I'm afraid of someone judging me for what I read if they find my comment
I don't like being tracked/leaving a trail
I don't think fanfic writers should expect comments
If I don't have time to leave a big long comment I don't like commenting at all
I don't want to bother the author
Nuance/Other (feel free to explain in the comments or tags)
I always or almost always comment
Please reblog for a large sample size, I'm legitimately curious
Crazy how “commenting makes me anxious/stressed” is the highest response but writers are expected to post our work without any of those same emotions. Like?
Genuinely. How does that work.
I’m not gonna touch the “I’m too tired to comment” responses, that just pisses me clean off.
You're not too tired to demand an update. You're not too stressed to send an ask for the next chapter. You're not too shy to send hate mail. You're not too lazy to enjoy the fruits of our work. You're not too anxious to recognize it's been a few months and you're wondering when the next part is so you send dms and asks and comments (nothing hurts more than thinking you finally have a comment only for it to be a question about an update). You're not too in your head to complain about the overabundance of smut fics, kinks, fics you deem bad or unworthy, or ooc fanfic.
This is a hobby.
No one is making writers write and no one is making readers read. But since writers are writing and readers are reading, its wild that writers *want* to talk to readers and there's juss radio silence. There's a breakdown somewhere between us posting with requests for feedback and you reading but cant tell us *what* you liked about it. Reading comprehension somehow flies out the window when it comes time to say something.
Are you even reading it? Or are you consuming it like popcorn?
You can love the fic all you want but if you dont tell us that, we think we need to stop writing and plenty of people have already stopped. That's lost art.
No one is entitled to comments, thats true. But yall cant be having a fun time out here in these fanfic skreets when this convo comes up every few months proving that you're not. Yall cant tell me its fun to read these beautiful pieces of human art and then go about your day like it didnt affect you in any way. Yall cant tell me that you have a favorite writer and you're leaving them wondering why their work isn't worth one sentence. One word. One keysmash. One gif or meme to boost the writer's confidence.
But maybe this is your idea of fun. 🤷🏽♀️ Maybe you like waiting 50 years for the next update. Maybe you like being a silent fan, not sharing your feedback with the writer. Maybe you like having no one to gush over the fic with 🤷🏽♀️
A lot of yall have to heal your ideas and feelings around celebrity, big blog vs little blog, trying to be a tumblr influencer, novel writing vs fanfic writing, and the entitlement. You need to learn to have discernment. That goes for writers and readers. There are writers who want to be the prettiest girl at the party so badly that they dont comment on other writers' works. They dont even read from other writers for the preposterous notion that they dont wanna be influenced by someone else. (You're supposed to be influenced by other writing, thats how this thing works lol, but theft and plagarism is a real thing) These writers post from their island of one, or send themselves anons to fake engagement, use AI to drop 80k words of nonsense to keep up with "demand", or pretend like their stories are the only ones that matter on this app. Pay attention to who doesn't clap for others but expect all of the readers and engagement. Take competition out of fanfic hobbies! There's plenty of seats at the table, we can all have one.
A lot of the shyness comes from being overwhelmed while reading. *Thats* what you comment. Which part made you happy, sad, or confused? Comment that. Or it could be that you feel cringe for enjoying fanfic. Fanfic writing IS real writing and the sooner yall understand that, the sooner we can go back to having fun on here.
This is an anon site so unless you share your business, unless you share your tumblr with your irl folks, theres no reason to be shy. Fanfic writers are regular-smegular people with day jobs, kids, caretakers, and are nerds about the same thing you're into.
Writers juss wanna know that someone out their is feeling their shit the same way they are. Writers are not mind readers. Likes dont tell us if you read it. It's not like we're notified when you click into the post or when you're done reading or that you enjoyed the piece.
At this point, yall must really love dead tags and an empty tumblrsphere. Yall must love checking for updates just to go another day without em. And thats fine, no one can make you comment. But when writers deactivate, I don't wanna see a flood of comments and asks like "No! Dont go! What happened to so and so..?"
You cant have it both ways. You either wanna enjoy this hobby with us or you don't. We're asking you to engage with us so we don't abandon this hobby (thats gets us through our day or week) or keep our work to ourselves. Takes .2 seconds to send a picture or a sentence and if you're too lazy for that but not to lazy to leave a comment under a tiktok video then maybe this hobby isnt really for you.
You wouldnt drive a car with no gas, so why do you want writers to write with no engagement? And then make them feel bad for wanting engagement?
We're not *demanding* it, but it sure would be nice not to post to the void.
