And now for something completely different: a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach giving birth.

What, you say? You thought cockroaches just laid eggs? Well, they do! Just… some species incubate their eggs - still within their eggsac- internally and then ‘birth’ them once they’ve hatched. (This is called being ovoviviparous).

It’s cool and gross and fascinating and not something most people ever get to see, so I got permission to share this great video my friend Cindi took of one of the collection cockroaches giving birth. I’ve tried to tag it as thoroughly as possible.

Orange-ish vs ‘Normal’ vs (what you’re breeding)

The one you’re breeding is significantly smaller than the other two, as well as softer. The banding on her hood is almost translucent that the camera did not pick up.

Closer look at that special one I found. You can kind of see her head through her hood.

The Audubon Insectarium has a cockroach cam that’s set up in what appears to be a dollhouse. They give the roaches TV to watch. They give the roaches an Easter egg. They give the roaches a teeny tiny rug. This is the cutest roach exhibit I have ever encountered and I cannot wait to see it next weekend.
