okay technically it’s like day 5 but all the stuff before doesn’t count. also me using my tumblr blog as an actual blog?!???!? wtf

this is the end goal for reference.

so there are two main parts to the look: the robe & the circle thing on top.

i started out drafting a basic pattern but realized that having the front all be one panel would be kinda annoying i decided to further split up the garment into a top half & bottom half, not just a full cloak from long pieces of fabric. i’m not as worried about the bottom half as i am the top half since it includes sleeves.

NOTE: I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL SEAMSTRESS. i am not even an experienced seamstress & lowkey all of my projects before this have turned out to be ASS. i don’t have any training or have taken any classes. this is all based on lazy internet research.

my top pattern ended up looking like this, i reused it for the back but made the neckline higher.

i want it to be really drape-y & flowy so i made the arm hole way bigger than it needs to be & the shoulder also longer. the cloak as seen in pictures has a split down the front so the two front pieces are separate where as the back is one piece.

i used some test fabric, making sure to not back stitch & that my stitch length was the longest it could be. & after doing the front & back panels, it looked like a regular (if not very amateur) vest. so then i needed to do sleeves. ruh roh

following youtube tutorials this was the curve of the sleeve i came up with, & just extended the length & cut on the fold to make it symmetrical. originally my curve was more compact, but i extended it for a larger sleeve.

then i sewed the sleeve onto the vest 😬

& to be honest NOT BAD! not even super lazy or bunched up, especially considering the fact that i didn’t ease in the sleeve or anything & this is my first time doing this sort of thing.

however, you may have noticed this is a regular boring sleeve whereas the sleeve in my design is layered. well, fret not! the final sleeve will actually look like this,

which is a quite simple design really, & similar to the few other projects i’ve done in the past. but the different layers will be done with lace!

which brought me to my grandmas! she has tons of extra fabric that she & my great grandma used to use when sewing. so real vintage lace, which is AWESOME!

however, you have probably noticed it’s white & not purple. well. i went to the craft store & picked up some fabric dye. which is also a first for me because my mom is very against dying fabric for some reason, but im an adult & my grandma gave me permission so. also my grandma was nice enough to buy not only the dye, but the actual fabric im going to be using too!!!

tomorrow i’m going to cut the fabric & start making the top with the purple, including the sleeves, & perhaps dye some of the lace if i get that far. & once the top is done, it’s going to be smooth sailing really!!!!!!!!!!

the circle top thing will be super easy, & i’m not sure if i want to do the jabot like i have in the design or do a gothic victorian collar. we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. as for the hat, im unsure if ill do it or combine a more goth element to the outfit like a peaked hat.

i also have been gifted my mother’s bride’s maid dress she wore over 20 years ago from before she went through a weight loss journey that is a similar color to my fabric (though slightly more red & saturated) that i want to incorporate somehow.

& we’ll see what is left for the stars, if i have undyed lace still, perhaps ill use that😝
