     ayumu wastes no time------fingers immediately start smoothing through the woman’s golden tresses, pulling apart the tiny entanglements until the mass becomes workable. then, he wraps her hair over itself a few times and secures it before working his magic, his focus quiet and intense. and when he’s done, he pulls away while checking in the mirror.  “ is that fine? “

     ayumu’s height is one of his greatest misfortunes. why? because most japanese people are short and so are their doorways. given his nature, he has a tendency to hit his head on overpasses. there have even been times where he’s knocked himself out like this. 

     when ayumu was in college and grad school, his body would shut down at random periods of time from lack of sleep, be it mid-lecture or even in the middle of walking. there are times where he’s gotten hurt because of this, but luckily it wasn’t anything permanent.

     “ until you feel like you’ve learned something, “  is his brisk response. maybe he knows too much, and has high standards for what could be considered  ‘ learned ‘.  understandably, this subject probably isn’t anything near what nicole wants to learn in college, but a core class is a core class and, well, there’s no avoiding it. the least he can do, as a teacher, is make sure she passes the curriculum well enough that she won’t have to retake it.  “ trust me, you’ll be happy about this extra credit opportunity. just fill out the worksheet, and if you have any questions, i’ll help you. “ 

ayumu: i don’t

     ayumu adores his hair and is absolutely terrified of getting it cut. he even feels really iffy about the trims. he gets a bit fidgety in his chair and constantly remind his hairdresser to not cut off too much, and if it gets too short, he ends up being visibly upset for a few days.

     “ that’s just how it is, “  ayumu replies, taking a seat on the stool beside her. he props his notebook on one knee, scrawling detailed notes on nicole’s particular tissue, swabbed from the inside of her own cheek. it’s the most that he can do to maintain interest, given that tutoring doesn’t allow much room for slacking off.  “ it varies from form to form, but it gives you a general idea of what’s going on in your body. “

     ayumu loves baked goods——his favorite food is fresh rosemary bread. he doesn’t have much experience with baking, however, so he typically goes to the nearby bakery on a regular basis to pick up bread and muffins, among other goods, to bring home.

     ayumu has a potted basil plant. it sits on the ground under the light that comes in through the window. throughout the day, he’ll move the pot across the floor to keep it in the window of light, which occasionally results in visitors tripping over it when they’re passing through the living room.

     ayumu’s parents still send packages of home-grown rice to his home in the city. it’s a gracious gesture, since the farm back at home isn’t large and the vast majority of the croppage goes to the street market to sell. despite his concern for his family’s finances, he appreciates the occasional taste of home; he doesn’t get to visit his parents often because of his wariness of travel expenses.
