Slime mold was grown on an agar gel plate shaped like America and food sources were placed where America’s large cities are.
The result? A possible look at how to best build public transportation.
I just really like the idea of slime mold on a map of the US. It’s beautiful.
I’m—
holy shit
I have a raging science ladyboner right now.
I’d love if we could do it on a state-by-state basis.
That same slime mold once affirmed that the Tokyo subway is pretty well-designed.

How do hummingbirds defy wind and rain?
Holy hovering hummingbirds, this video is amazing! Hummingbird flight is an amazing feat of physics, their metabolism and migration habits almost defy the laws of nature, and their feeding habits can even demonstrate economic principles.
But when you put hummingbirds in a wind tunnel and simulate blustery rainstorms? That’s takes avian awesomeness to 11. Watch the full video from Deep Look here:
Amazing Photo Captures Weasel ‘Riding’ a Woodpecker
An amazing new photo taken Monday captured the rare moment of a weasel “riding” on the back of a woodpecker, though it wasn’t all fun and games.
Amateur photographer Martin Le-May, 52, witnessed the free ride while walking with his wife in the Hornchurch Country Park in east London. And what looked like harmless play turned out to be a battle between predator and prey.
Le-May heard “distressed squawking” and soon realized that the weasel was actually trying to eat what appeared to be a European green woodpecker.
"The bird flew across us and slightly in our direction; suddenly it was obvious it had a small mammal on its back and this was a struggle for life," Le-May told Business Insider.
According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, despite their small size, weasels are notoriously bold and aggressive predators. They mostly eat mice, rats and rabbits, but will also take on, it seems, birds, as well as frogs.
"It’s quite unusual for them to go for a bird but green woodpeckers forage on the ground. I imagine the weasel gave it a go, jumped on its back and then the woodpecker took off," Le-May told ITV.
Le-May “feared the worst” for the bird, which landed just about 25 meters (82 feet) from the couple. But thankfully, a welcomed distraction gave the imperiled woodpecker a chance to escape.
"I guess our presence… momentarily distracted the weasel," Le-May said. "The woodpecker seized the opportunity and flew up and away into some bushes away to our left. Quickly the bird gathered its self respect and flew up into the trees and away from our sight."

Have you ever felt a potential love for someone? Like, you don’t actually love them and you know you don’t, but you know you could. You realise that you could easily fall in love with them. It’s almost like the bud of a flower, ready to blossom but it’s just not quite there yet. And you like them a lot, you really do. You think about them often, but you don’t love them. You could, though. You know you could.

the science building in my university has PERIODIC TABLES
if two people sat at that table for a romantic dinner they would be carbon dating
I stopped looking for the light. Decided to become it instead.
