PROLOGUE: Thoughts in an Empty Dressing Roomš„
Ah, it seems that you have found me! Was this unexpected? Well⦠not exactlyā¦
I apologize for my absence, but you see- Iāve got a lot of thoughts to think, lately: Of heroes and villains- of roses quite red. Of words that were sung⦠and many unsaid. Of ink for the presses and fine white dresses.
(Although, I must say, that gown is quite pretty. Should I put it on for a dance in the city?)
This room is nice, even after it was named ācursedā. A result of things going from bad to worst⦠you know, the kind that puts you in the back of a hearse.
It should be said that our theatre is quite old. āFilled with legends and horrors untold. And while I donāt give most of them reprieve, there is one story here that should be believed; A tale that began in this very room.
And has sent many to their ultimate doom.
ā¦I can still hear them- the strings and the gongs. Questions and prayers reverberated in song. Had it all been different, I wonder, would everything still had erupted in thunder?
Who can truly know? Who can really say? But that⦠is not the story being told today.
No⦠this is one of bootstraps and consequence. Of winters from before and had happened, since.
But to begin this epic, we must return- ājust before the epilogue, when Lanceās ire was spurned.
When everyone was quick to leave with what they got,
And one bright young lady
When Emma Cole got out of the shower she dried herself off, put on her pajamas, brushed her teeth and got into bed.
She turned off the lamp on her nightstand and slipped deeper into the covers. Normally, this would be the end of day. But sleep did not come easily to Emma; she laid in her bed, staring straight up to the ceiling and at the veil of moonlight that flowed in from the window.
And she doesnāt really understand why.
Today should have been the best day ever. The best birthday ever! By all accounts, it was! Her friends- servant and school friend alike- werenāt saying bad things behind her back- they were throwing her a surprise party! The decorations, the presents- the prettiest and yummiest cake she had ever tasted.
It was by far a much better birthday party than anything her familyās inherited wealth could buy. And much more heartfelt after such a huge misunderstanding.
And yet⦠a small amount of anxiety lingers in the back of her mind and in the core of her heart.
Emma Cole was just about to cross the threshold through her door, just as Balan told her. But a noise stops the girl in her tracks.
She lingers on the doorframe as she watches something dark and familiar appear from the corner of her eye.
The Maestroās back was turned, giving Emma an ample opportunity to run behind her door rather than through it. From there, she watched and listened to Lance and Balanās conversation unobserved-
And what Lance told Balan threw her into complete and utter DESPAIR, chasing the girl out the door before either of them had noticed.
But this is silly, Emma told herself. Everything is going to be fine. Balan is a strong and capable Maestro.
"I swear on my top hat, I will not end up like that!ā
He would never give into such a clichƩ temptation.
āDo you hear me? I refuse to share your destiny!"
He wouldnāt allow himself to break the rules because of a fear of⦠losing peopleā¦
"That's what I said, too.ā
Lance⦠doesnāt know anything about Balan- heās lyingā¦
āBut it was too late for me, and it's too late for you."
Lance⦠is a liar. āAlways has been. āAlways will be.
The poor girlās tears finally reached her eyes. She brought her hands to her face to wipe them away, but it did little to stop the crying.
The whole thing was ridiculous. How cruel, how pessimistic it had to be to condemn Balan for simply loving and caring for the guests who come to the theatre? And he was, she saw it; every challenge and trial a guest had to face was always under Balanās watchful eye. No one was ever truly alone in the midst of their struggles.
But how far can that protection go? Who could say that Balan would never get overly attached?
Because if it was true⦠if all of this was true⦠then all it would take was one really, truly bad day.
Emma Cole felt her heart break. She couldnāt help it. No one could help it. No one couldā¦
This was the exact feeling that made Emma run away this morning. The one that essentially brought her to Wonderworld.
She canāt risk Balan feeling sorry for her! She canāt risk the fate of the theatre⦠if he felt that he was the only one who could help her.
And so, even though it was her birthday, Emma Cole swallowed her pain as she silently cried into her pillow. She wept for about an hour before her body and mind were exhausted and finally gave in to sleepā¦
