sometimes instead of “why can’t they just be friends” i think it should be “why can’t they also be friends” because sometimes shipping feels much too much like forcing two pretty characters to kiss and be intimate without actually being interested in the dynamic the two people have. what about hanging out together. what about why they like being in each others company. what do they argue about. how do they patch things up. what do they laugh about.

love love love love love that the endnote to the entire series is john and gale finally flying together. parted in the first episode, we never see them fly a mission in the same plane, go down seperately, and get separated again during the second march. gale gets back to england, but he can't go home yet, won't go home yet, not without john. it's not marge's picture he puts in his pocket, it's john's lucky deuce. then when he gets back from the first food drop, it's john's voice in his ear, like magic, a miracle. the stone in his shoe, back for good. so of course of course of course the whole thing ends with them going home together. pilot and copilot, side by side, finally.
