This is only 40 minutes worth of photon capture of this distant small object. NGC 2359, Thor’s Helmet Nebula, is a 12,000 light year distant emission nebula in the constellation Canis Major. It is about 30 light-years in size. The central star is an extremely hot star thought to be in a brief pre-supernova stage of evolution. Interactions with a nearby large molecular cloud are thought to have contributed to its complex shape and curved bow-shock structure. From two nights ago, 75 minutes worth of exposure time on the globular cluster known as NGC 6934. It appears much smaller than the cluster I uploaded a couple of days ago, M 15. Indeed NGC 6934 does appear to be about 2/3s the size of and is almost half again further away than M 15. Globular clusters sit above and below the plane of the elliptical of our Milky Way and orbit its parent galaxy. Indeed all spiral galaxies as well as irregular galaxies exhibit globular clusters. At last count almost 160 have been discovered orbiting the Milky Way. The clusters themselves are comprised of as few as a couple hundred thousand stars and as large as millions of stars. They range from 10 billion to upwards of 13 billion years old. And are therefore some of the oldest known objects in the universe.
