So… About Those X-Men
Insomniac's Wolverine game replaces the X-Men with Team X, a move drawing scrutiny from fans after reported Sweet Baby Inc. involvement.
Happy Sunday Claws & Thunder Family!
I've been seeing a lot of discussion online surrounding comments reportedly made by Marvel's Wolverine creative director Marcus Smith regarding the game's continuity.
According to comments currently making the rounds, Marvel's Wolverine may be set in a world where the X-Men don't exist.
Now before anyone grabs their pitchforks, let's remember that we're still working with limited information. Context matters, and there's always the possibility that parts of this discussion are being taken out of context or blown out of proportion.
That said... I will admit that this is the first thing I've heard about the game that gives me pause.
Not because I think Wolverine needs the X-Men watching his six. Quite the opposite, actually. One of the reasons Logan works so well as a character is because he's constantly going off on his own. Some of his best stories are solo adventures.
But that's exactly why I'm a little confused.
If Logan is already capable of carrying an entire game by himself, why remove the X-Men from his world altogether?
Based on what we've seen so far, Jean Grey appears to exist. Sabretooth exists. Omega Red exists. Mystique exists. The game is clearly drawing from Wolverine's larger corner of Marvel lore.
So if Jean Grey is already part of Logan's story, it naturally raises questions about the wider mutant world. Jean and the X-Men are so interconnected in Marvel lore that separating one from the other isn't impossible, but it is an interesting creative choice... a choice that I hope the game answers in a satisfying way.
I've also got to admit that the RoLo fan in me immediately started asking questions.
If the X-Men don't exist in this universe, what does that mean for Ororo?
Does Logan know Storm?
Does their friendship exist?
Does their history exist?
For decades, Storm has been one of Logan's closest friends and confidantes. Their relationship has always been defined by the trust, respect, and bond they built through years of shared experiences. Whether you see them as friends, partners, teammates, or the powerhouse couple like I do, their deep connection is rooted in a long and complicated history. If the X-Men's history is different in this universe, it's only natural for fans to wonder how characters like Ororo fit into that picture.
Now, to be clear, I'm not saying Storm has to appear in the game. Plenty of great Wolverine stories don't involve Ororo at all. But as a RoLo fan, it's hard not to wonder what this decision might mean for one of the most important relationships in Logan's life.
From a fan perspective, it feels like the X-Men could exist in the background without taking anything away from Logan's story. Wolverine has spent decades balancing solo adventures with his connections to the X-Men. The two ideas aren't mutually exclusive.
And if I'm being completely honest, I'm not entirely sure what either Marvel or the X-Men brand gains by making this distinction. Logan's connection to the X-Men has been a fundamental part of the character for over fifty years. Acknowledging that history doesn't mean the X-Men need to appear in the game or overshadow the story. It simply means that part of Logan's world exists.
Of course, all of this could end up being much ado about nothing. We still know very little about the full story, and we all know that speculation has a way of snowballing online.
So am I suddenly less excited for the game?
Not even close.
The trailers still look phenomenal. Wolverine looks and sounds like Wolverine. And September 15 remains one of my most anticipated gaming releases in years.
Will I still be buying it?
Hell yeah.
But I'll also be paying attention to see whether this is simply an unusual creative choice... or whether it points to something larger.
For now, I'm keeping an open mind and remaining cautiously optimistic.
What do you all think? Let me know in the comments below.
Storm Saturdays by Claws & Thunder Presents:
Five Times Ororo Stole the Scene in Season One of X-Men: The Animated Series
I remember the first time I saw Storm on television.
It was the fall of 1992, and I was incredibly excited about this new show premiering on the Fox Kids Saturday morning lineup. It was a crisp October morning, and I can still remember sitting in the den eating a bowl of cereal when the iconic theme music from X-Men: The Animated Series came on.
Needless to say, I was captivated... Hell, I still jump around like a big kid whenever I hear that theme music.
And while I loved all of the characters featured that morning, there were two who instantly stole my heart. If you've been following Claws & Thunder for any length of time, you can probably guess which two.
There was just something about Storm and Wolverine that resonated with me. Their strength, their presence, and their complexity were enough to turn me into a lifelong fan. More than three decades later, I'm still just as devoted to these characters as I was that Saturday morning.
It's hard to put into words exactly how I felt watching Storm every week. She was powerful, compassionate, fearless, and unforgettable. Whether she was leading the team, standing up for what was right, or summoning the full force of the elements, Ororo Munroe had a way of commanding every scene she was in.
Since it all began with Season One, I thought it would be fun to revisit the episodes that first made me fall in love with Storm. So for this week's Storm Saturday, I'm looking back at five moments from Season One of X-Men: The Animated Series where Ororo Munroe absolutely stole the scene and reminded us why she remains one of the most iconic characters in the X-Men universe.
And if five moments aren't enough, don't worry. Join us next Saturday as we continue our look back at Season One with five more unforgettable Storm moments.
Night of the Sentinels part 1
For many fans, this was our introduction to Storm in action. When a Sentinel attempts to abduct Jubilee, Ororo and Rogue waste no time stepping in to protect her, giving viewers their first glimpse of the power and heroism that would make Storm a fan favorite for generations.
Night of the Sentinels part 1
One of Storm's greatest strengths has always been her compassion. In this quiet moment with Jubilee, Ororo's warmth, wisdom, and patience shine through, reminding us that she wasn't just a hero to the X-Men, she was also a mentor to the next generation.
Night of the Sentinels part 2
When Beast pauses to quote poetry in the middle of a mission, Storm quickly reminds everyone that there is a time and place for everything. Her sharp decision-making, calm authority, and ability to keep the team focused on the mission make this one of Season One's best examples of Ororo in a leadership role.
Night of the Sentinels part 2
The X-Men may have been working together to stop the Sentinels, but Storm still managed to steal the scene. Her mastery of the elements is on full display here, showcasing the power, confidence, and grace that made her one of the team's most formidable members.
Enter Magneto
When Magneto launches nuclear warheads in an attempt to start a war between humans and mutants, Storm is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice to stop him. Thankfully, Professor X is able to telepathically show her how to safely neutralize the warheads, showcasing Ororo's courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to protecting others. As an added bonus for RoLo fans, this moment also gives us the very first Logan and Ororo scene in the series.
As always... I choose RoLo!
Marvel's Wolverine Extended Trailer
Happy Wolverine Wednesday, Everyone!
Like most of you, I watched the extended trailer for Marvel's Wolverine yesterday afternoon, and all I can say is... September cannot get here fast enough.
This trailer was an absolute adrenaline rush from start to finish. The action feels fast, brutal, and fluid. The combat is savage in all the right ways, and the game seems to capture everything that makes Wolverine such an iconic character. It's gritty. It's bloody. It's relentless. Every minute of the trailer felt like it understood exactly who Logan is.
As the resident RoLo fangirl, I was naturally hoping we'd catch a glimpse of whether Ororo might appear somewhere in the game. No such luck... at least not yet. And honestly, that's okay. They're not going to reveal every surprise in an extended trailer. There's still plenty of time for Insomniac to keep a few cards hidden up their sleeve.
Jean did make an appearance, but thankfully it doesn't look like this game is going to reduce Logan to endlessly pining after her. At least based on what we've seen so far, this feels like Wolverine's story.
And what a story it appears to be.
I also loved seeing some of the other characters confirmed to appear in the game. Mystique, Omega Red, and of course Sabretooth all showed up, which immediately made the world feel bigger and more connected to the X-Men universe. Sabretooth in particular was downright terrifying, and if the trailer is any indication, their rivalry is going to be every bit as brutal and sadistic as Wolverine fans have been hoping for.
So yes, I absolutely loved what I saw. Every frame feels like it was created by people who genuinely understand and respect the character. This doesn't look like a generic superhero game wearing Wolverine's claws. It looks like a Wolverine game built by Wolverine fans for Wolverine fans.
And yes, before anyone asks, I'll be heading to GameStop this weekend to place my pre-order.
September 15 can't get here fast enough. And as always, I choose RoLo.
