Just a reminder about some things:
- For abusers that prefer boys, they on average have 150 victims prior to being caught
- For abuser that prefer girls, they on average have 53 victims prior to being caught
- The average abuser is caught at 35 and started abusing at 13
- Abusers don't have a visual profile (they often are married and have jobs). We must look at characteristics
- 90% of victims' abusers are people they know and trust
- Only 10% of sexual abusers encounter the criminal justice system (90% wouldn't be flagged with a background check)
- By convictions, 85% of abusers are male, 15% female (don't automatically trust someone because she's a female)
- Molesters groom a child for abuse - Molesters groom the gatekeepers (expend a lot of effort to appear helpful and trustworthy) - Molesters are looking for trusted time alone with children who they are grooming - Molesters are generally skilled at meeting a child's needs
