enjin comforts you after a bad day (not proofread)
Enjin's dorm in Cleaner's HQ is right next to yours, and he would be lying if he said he didn't lie awake every night, straining to listen to the sound of your footsteps or the rustling of your sheets as you climbed into bed. He wanted to know you were okay. If you were getting enough rest. He could always tell when you had a tiring day. Your footsteps would be heavier, and you'd pace around in your room for a while before retiring to bed.
Tonight is different. Enjin senses it the moment he hears your footsteps pause not outside of your door, but his door. He freezes, wondering why you're here. You hardly ever visit his room, even though you're practically neighbors.
He waits for a knock, but it doesn't come. Instead, your footsteps redirect, shifting in the other direction. He hears the soft creak of your door, then a metallic click.
His mind spins with confusion. You had been about to knock on his door, right? He wasn't hallucinating?
Then, over the rush of his heartbeat, he heard it. Soft, suppressed sobs coming from the other side of the wall. You're crying.
Something in his gut twists, and he's moving before he can think. He pulls open his door, finding himself standing in front of your room.
"Y/n?" he calls, leaning against your door, straining to hear. "You okay in there?"
"Enjin?" you sniffle. "What are you..."
"You were at my door, weren't you? But you didn't knock. Thought I'd stop by and check in on you."
"M'fine," you say, voice slightly strained as you struggle to keep your sobs in.
"You don't sound fine," he says, voice uncharacteristically gentle. "Is it okay if I come in?"
He opens the door and is greeted by the sight of you curled up at the headboard of your bed, wrapped in bedsheets , hugging a pillow to your chest.
"Hey," he crouches by your bed to look up at you. "Bad day, huh?"
You nod. Your face is streaked with tears you haven't bothered to wipe, eyes red, hair a mess.
Enjin doesn't say anything more. As if by instinct, he takes the spot next to you and wraps you in his arms.
"Why didn't you knock on my door earlier?" he asks. Using his sleeve, he begins to gently wipe the tears from your face.
"Didn't know what to say...and I'm a mess and crying and..."
"Then don't say anything. You don't have to. And 'mess'? You? That ain't possible. I always like seein' you, whether you're crying or laughing or glaring at me because of some stupid joke you didn't find funny."
For once, you don't retort. You slump against him, worn out by the shitty day and energy spent crying.
"I've got you," Enjin says, pulling you closer. "And next time, knock on my door. I'll always let you in."
