I'm a camp counselor, and at the beginning of this past week, I had a camper who did not like insects and attempted to kill one. I asked them not to because we should respect our environment. They were angry with me and began calling me Beetlejuice. I decided to take the name in stride even though I could tell that they were trying to get under my skin.

On Thursday, a figeater beetle was flying around, and my campers got scared. I told them that the beetle wasn't going to hurt them and to leave it be. The figeater beetle landed on my shirt, and I remained calm. The camper who called me Beetlejuice approached me and said that the beetle was actually "kind of cute," and didn't attempt to do anything. The rest of the campers were worried that I'd get hurt, but I talked about how they land on me often, and I've never been injured by one. The beetle ended up moving into my hair, and I eventually used a paper plate to coax it out of my hair and onto a nearby plant. The campers watched it in fascination, and no one tried to harm the beetle in any way.

Steve Irwin was my hero growing up, and I used to dream of being a herpetologist at a zoo. Even though I never achieved that dream, I feel so much joy every time I get to educate kids about the wildlife in our area, especially the uncharismatic kind. I've seen a trend over the past 10 years of kids becoming more afraid of and violent towards "bugs" and "creepy crawlies." Changing the views of even one kid means the world to me.

In that vein, I wanted to thank you for continuously advocating for the uncharismatic, the creepy, and the unknown creatures. I love learning new things from you whenever you post! Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to this blog. <3

And every once in a while I’ll find a dummy that says “racism and slavery was such a long time ago” UM REALLY it wasn’t. I mean for fucks sake a woman was hung on Juneteenth. And then sometimes people will say “oh well how is that related at all to _____ (typically a post I make about black goths)”

And it’s just like UM HELLOOO ITS ALL CONNECTED. I want to see more black creatives and artist . I can’t see more black creatives and artists if they’re dead 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️and I mean all black artists, not just artists the public deem worthy to show, I mean everything. Because there’s only but a certain point where things are “acceptable” for black people. Which is how the whole “oh you’re alternative? You’re trying to be white” thing started DESPITE black people having a hand in i want to say nearly every alternative genre since it began.

So yes it is ALWAYS that serious for me to make posts reminding people that we have always been here. And that our creativity and willingness to be ourselves is a form of resistance. I look the way I do so I can not only uplift myself but other people around me who want to embrace their hair texture. Because for so long I swear I was told it couldn’t be done. Or that it wasn’t for me. WELL bitch it’s that’s how it’s going to be today. And I am not going anywhere. And for the people that are most likely going to purposely misinterpret my words, I am bro black not anti white. You will not lose any representation by adding black people to the list. I am not dividing the subculture I’m making it even and fair like how it’s supposed to be. And if you take it as some sort of division then you may want to look into yourself and ask why you think like that.
