Remember y'all if we took bits away, horses would never display pain or conflict behaviors associated with the bridle ever

Here are some diagrams showing different indicators of tension in equine facial expressions
Thank you for showing diagrams. I have now tried to compare the pain faces with istock images of horses running without riders, footage of liberty work with Nadine Lindblom, and images of horses gaping and evading the bit. I have a hard time differentiating between the face of a horse that is exerting themself and a horse that is feeling pain. Though I will mention that I noticed something.
In the pictures of the horses with bitless setups that you provided, and in the pictures of horses evading the bit that I found, the dips behind the eyes where filled, which to me indicates that their jaws were clenched. (I remember this dip filling and unfilling while my late childhood horse chewed). I did not see this tension often in the pictures of horses prancing in their pastures. Maybe this is something. Idk. I am not very confident that I have found a pattern, but I thought this was interesting :P
horses a absolutely will show conflict behaviors at liberty. You don't need to be touching a horse to inflict discomfort on them. There can still be fear, pain, confusion, and coercion present. Even in positive reinforcement training, these can still be encountered.
Yes. My impression so far though (have not looked at her stuff very closely yet) is that Lindblom is doing things well, but yeah, no one can know what is happening while the camera is not running. I also had the thought that I cannot know whether the istock pics where of horses frolicking of their own volititon, or of if they were startled, but anyways!
While we are on the topic of horse facial expressions, do you have thoughts about telling the difference between the expression of a horse that is exerting themself and/or concentrating, and a horse that is distressed? Because surely the face of a horse that is exerting a lot of effort will have a tense face in some ways similar to a pain face?
