Casual back pats
Have you seen Thomas Astruc's comment on the movie Encanto?
Okay, I’m just going to be blunt, and rest assured, I’m completely sober while writing this, but I don’t really have a lot of problems with what Astruc said about Encanto.
Yes, I personally enjoyed the film and think it’s one of the best things Disney’s made recently (though I still had some problems with it) and don’t necessarily agree with what Astruc said, I don’t really think it’s as eyebrow-raising as the things he’s said about Pixar’s movies and character designers, Wonder Woman 1984, and Winx Club, where his criticisms were far harsher compared to what he said about Encanto.
While he did say he wasn’t a fan of the movie in his initial Facebook post, he did go more into detail that he didn’t think it was objectively bad, there were just certain plot elements and themes he wasn’t a fan of.
It didn’t help that he watched the French dub instead of the English dub, and after just watching a few key scenes (Abuela’s brief monologue about her worries the magic is fading, a couple of the songs, and some of the banter between Mirabel and Bruno), yeah, I can see why he wasn’t a fan of it. A lot of the accents in the French dub didn’t sound as authentic as the English dub, and compared to the songs in the English dub where most of the voice actors had singing experience, the soundtrack in the French dub just paled in comparison.
But again, a lot of the problems he had (not really understanding some of the cultural themes, the lack of a big adventure in favor of a more simple story) were fairly reasonable, and he still enjoyed the story and praised the visual aspect of the movie. He wasn’t saying something along the lines of “People are idiots for liking Encanto because it’s objectively a horrible movie!” but more something along the lines of “You know, I get that a lot of people love Encanto, and I’m really happy they do, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea.”
Of course, people inevitably brought up Astruc’s work and how Marinette fails in comparison to Mirabel as a character, and again, I understand his defense here.
While I have criticized Marinette’s selfish actions in the past, it’s still important to remember that her character arc (as loosely defined as it is) hasn’t finished yet, and that the pacing in a 90-minute movie has to be faster compared to a TV show with over a hundred episodes, so it’s unfair to compare the two as protagonists. Admittedly, I think Encanto pulled off the everyman protagonist better than what we’ve gotten with Marinette, but I still understand his reasoning.
So while I don’t necessarily agree with Astruc’s opinion on the movie, I still understand the arguments he makes, and I don’t think he was nearly as rude as he was the other times he’s criticized something outside of his show.
Granted, someone else’s comment on the movie also motivated Astruc to say something...
Which led to, well...
I’ll talk about what this little tweet led to soon enough.
And before anyone asks, my favorite song in the movie was “Surface Pressure” instead of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, my favorite characters were Luisa, Pepa and Felix, and I think Dolores really deserved more screentime and a song of her own.
I have to disagree with your assessment here. The things he praised (animation) and things he condemned (voice acting, music) aren't even things in his expertise, as he believes that only people in their own fields should criticize each other apparently.
I mean, you took the time to look into the French version to find that he could be right, and that's commendable, but I can almost guarantee if someone suggested he try to watch in the original English version or even see if he could find a favorite from one of the "X Song in 20+ Languages", he would block and say he's entitled to his opinion. He doesn't afford those critical of his works the same leniency he gives himself.
And finally the one thing he COULD criticize, the writing, ended up being hypocritical! Weak situations and stakes? Yeah, like he hasn't retconned numerous episodes by now, or made villains that are just unlaughably stupid. Too many characters? Can't develop them? Wow, it's like the MLB cast doesn't have at least double the characters that fans have constantly complained don't get enough time. Also, if he thought being in a single household was suffocating, he must hate seeing the Eiffel Tower by now. The show has all of France as a playground and yet Encanto managed to have more variety of backdrops and environment than Miraculous has managed in its 8 year production time.
But, hey, let's be fair, those criticisms were on his facebook with his friends and shouldn't count, right?
Yet he flat face said we are a little less than half way through Miraculous. And I don't regret to say Encanto had a hell of a lot more development, emotion, and useful dialogue in the first fifth of its runtime than Miraculous has had by now. Astruc needs to realize his jealousy of other works with notably more popularity than his own... They work for a reason, and a lot of those reasons end up being what he rejects.
so anyways when is this boy gonna get a wardrobe upgrade please
let adrien do retail therapy
These are so pretty fr

I can't believe the Agrestes actually seem to be part of a CULT of influential rich people all around the world!
"Feast", "Felix" and the two specials had me already assuming it before but HOLY DAMN "Gabriel Agreste" basically confirmed that shit! What the HELL are these rich people grooming there children for for the last 15 years??
What was Gabriel talking about in the Shanghai special when he said that whatever plan they started 15 years ago (so literally Adriens age) he wanted to fulfill with the Prodigious? And why does almost every child of the rich adults (besides Chloe and Zoé) have some kind of connection to a ring?
Adrien has the twin rings, where one is now still in Gabriels possession and the other one with Félix.
Félix always had his own ring even before he stole Gabriels in "Félix. And since "Gabriel Agreste" basically confirmed in everything but name that Félix is a Sentimonster as well I say his own ring is his control object since he is already aware that he is a Sentimonster and Amilie gave it to him so he is under his own control.
Kagami has always had her own ring too and at this point I wouldn't put it past the show that she is ALSO a Sentimonster but not aware of it. Tomoe gave her her own control object (her ring) as well which honestly I find very in character for her.
And I asked myself for a solid moment why the hell Bob Roth is on the endcard and slightly interwoven with the narrative of the episode (Chloe trying to show Gabriel the video) but then I fucking realized that Bob is wearing a damn ring too and his son XY is a perfect candidate to be a Sentimonster as well!
What are these influential people grooming their kids for?? What is the purpose of the cult? Why did Gabriel say that alot of people would love to get their hands on the twin rings? And what do the Bourgeois' have to do with this???
Audrey was the person who made Gabriel the name he is today. The New York special took place in the location where Audrey has her greatest influence and with all of those weird superheroes who possess these bracelets with superpowers that seemed like false Miraculous created to replicate the original ones after they all were lost to the world when the Guardian temple burned down and Feast ate them, I don't trust this at all.
"Gabriel Agreste" took care to remind us that Gabriel himself feels like he needs to submit to her to some extent as if he still relies on her for something he doesn't want to risk
And of course the fact that out of all children it was CHLOÉ who was allowed to be Adriens only friend before he attended school roughly a year ago. But Zoé doesn't seem to have the same place in all of this as Chloé seems to have since Chloé was able to convince Audrey that Zoé doesn't need to be at the party the way SHE does
Miraculous Ladybug, you son of a bitch, you always had my attention but now we are TALKING!
