When Tabitha Smith was 4, her mother ran away in the middle of the night, leaving her with her abusive father. Her father told her for the next several years that her mother was dead, until she completely believed it. She never bothered with going to visit her grave; they were a poor family, and could barely afford a funeral, let alone a nice grave marker. That was what her father told her.Â
When Tabitha Smith was 14, she learned that her mother hadn’t died. Instead, she discovered, she had left Virginia and gone to New Orleans to try and start a new life. That night, Tabitha did the same thing. It had been ten years since her mother left, and she knew it was likely that she would no longer be in New Orleans, but Tabby had to try.
For the next several weeks, she made her way from Roanoke to New Orleans, by walking, hitch-hiking, and bus. Once there, she bounced around between homeless shelters, trying to pick up any news possible of her mother.
Tabitha continued to live on the streets of New Orleans for the next few years, getting work wherever she could to support herself and pay for food, clothing, and sometimes shelter. It was hard, but as far as she was concerned, anything was better than having to go back to her father.Â
Her luck turned around when she started living with a few other homeless girls in a junk yard. The man who owned the land saw her working on a car, fixing it over the course of several days, until she turned it from a total junker into a working vehicle. She sold the car for more cash, and began working on the other cars in the lot. The man who owned the land approached her, telling her that he knew of a garage that was looking for a new mechanic with her level of skill. After a few calls, Tabby had a job at the garage.
She was only 18 still, and her boss, Frank Beyonder, was uncomfortable with the idea of her living on the streets or in a junkyard. He offered her the guest room at his house, and the two soon started a relationship.
They continued to work the garage together, and everything was going well for the business. They had earned a reputation for Tabitha’s skill, and everyone knew that was the garage to go to.
When the outbreak occurred, Tabby wasn’t worried. She thought it was drugs, or a publicity stunt–there was no way it could be real zombies. That was stupid. She quickly changed her mind when the zombies attacked the garage, killing Frank and the other mechanic. Tabitha managed to kill the zombie who had bit them with a piece of pipe off one of the cars, but in that time Frank and the other man had revived, and they turned on her as well. She barely managed to escape with her life, and is trying to find other survivors.
