He’s also a prideful braggart of a kid who attributes some of Karasuno’s success to his natural athletic prowess, believes he can do several things on the first try, and maintains competition with Kageyama who is pretty unanimously agreed upon to be Kid Volleyball God. He picks fights with people he shouldn’t, likens himself to players way out of his skill range, and accepts flattery at the drop of a hat.

And I mean I REALLY appreciate this because Furudate is accurately keying in that pride and doubt usually go hand in hand, especially when inexperienced. Compared to Hinata, Kageyama is actually surprisingly humble. I mean yes he talks down to others and is aware of his overwhelming talent and is quick to snap at his peers, but in the face of other players like Oikawa or Ushiwaka, he is always extremely aware of where he stands and what he lacks. I’ve noticed that a lot of Kageyama’s lines in the original sub are quite formal and polite when regarding authority figures or discussions of skill, while Hinata remains fairly casual unless he is directly talking to someone who’s his senior (like Coach Ukai). I think it’s easy to overlook that Hinata has the same (if not greater) ego as Kageyama because he’s nice and excitable and is quick to compliment others, which Kageyama is not, but his pride is definitely more unfounded especially earlier in the series.
