In a nutshell:Â The girls gathered at the Belle Epoque house after a long time. Everyone had their story to tell, but before Kang eonni had the chance to tell her story in front of the girls, a kkaotalk message appeared on her phone screen while she was on her way to Belle Epoque.

Saturday Night
Belle Epoque
It's been a long time since the Belle Epoque girls reunited as a whole in the share house. It seems like the girls have so much to share with each other after the last time they gathered. Yeeun is conflicted with her parents' interference in her relationship with Hochang, Yoon Sunbae met her high school first love who happens to be a dance instructor at the entertainment company she works at, Kang eonni faced a terrible experience on her first day of work, whereas Jiwon is the one who seems to be experiencing rather flowery and happy moments. As for Eunjae and Eun, they both seem chill with life, but Eun is still surviving on her long-distance relationship situation with Janghoon.
07.07 p.m.
The girls, including Kang eonni, were gathered at Belle Epoque's cozy living room â each settling themselves down in a comfortable position. On the coffee table lie two boxes of two-flavored chicken, complete with a dozen cans of beer, unopened.
As the oldest in the group, Yoon sunbae opened the girl's night gathering with a short statement
Jinmyung:Â It's been a long time since we last sat in this living room together like this. I feel like there are A LOT of things we should catch up on. Whether it's your problems, your happy stories with your boyfriends-
As Yoon sunbae said 'boyfriends' the girls laughed and landed some playful glances on the ladies who are taken in the room.
Jinmyung:Â okay, guys I'm not gonna make this a long winded speech, but whatever it is, you should know that we have each other and at least me, I will always be by your side if you ever need a shoulder.
Yeeun smiled a little at Yoon sunbae's closing remarks, and jumped in.
Yeeun:Â Alriiight, why don't we start by drinking on these tempting cold cans of beer?
To that, everyone cheered in loudness and went excited in a split of second. Everyone had their hands on the beverage, opened the cans at once and clinked them as they yelled 'kombae!' before gulping the fizzy liquid down their throats. Everyone let go a sigh of satisfaction.
Jiwon who's been staring at the chicken in front of her eyes, couldn't help but to snatch a piece of drumstick and indulged on the flavorful snack. Kang eonni commented,
Yina:Â Ya, are have you not eaten for 10 years already? Eat slowly!
Jiwon:Â Ani, these babies are too tempting. I can't help it
Everyone laughed at Jiwon's comment, but understood why she did that because chicken is her favorite food anyway. Everyone started swarming for the chicken laying on the table as well.
Jiwon:Â So, who wants to start first?
Silence suddenly filled the air as Jiwon threw the question of the night. Honestly, nobody in the room was fully ready to share their stories that are long-due to be told. With courage, Yeeun who thought she needed much help and advice, spoke up
Yeeun:Â I'll start first.
Jiwon:Â Ooooh, Jung Yeeun, what story do you have for us?
The rest of the girls have their eyes on Yeeun who seemed to have worries clouding her face. Eun who was sitting opposite Yeeun knew what she was gonna talk about, but she kept quiet anyway, knowing that it's really time for Yeeun to share her concern to the girls.
Yeeun:Â You know how my mom is like right?
Yeeun's opening question is quite straightforward already. The girls stayed silence as they sensed the heavy topic that's coming. Everyone knows how protective her mom is after the overly traumatizing experience of the abusive relationship she had with Go Dooyoung. Of course, being protective isn't a bad thing, but what's not-so-good about her is the fact that she's too controlling. Everyone in the room knows how suppressed Yeeun feels.
Yeeun:Â I'll take your silence as a yes. You know... Hochang and I have been in a relationship for a while now, and you all know how nice and caring he is to me, and I feel like that's what I need after the traumatizing event happened two years ago. The problem is, my mom isn't fond of the idea of him dating me. She said he's nice and caring, but she doesn't like the fact that he doesn't satisfy the materialistic and high specs criteria of a guy.
Yeeun stopped for a while as she could feel a huge lump on her throat. She tried to contain herself for a moment.
Yeeun:Â Yeah, I mean I've never felt so genuinely cared for and loved by someone like Hochang before, and this is the first time I introduced my boyfriend to the family, but the outcome is seriously so disheartening. What should I do, guys?
Everyone totally understood her situation, and for Yeeun to spill the beans of her problems like this mean it's really serious. She might look tough and cheerful from the outside, but her heart is so soft and she'd rather bottle her feelings up rather than showing her weakness to others. The Belle Epoque girls knew all too well about that.
Yina:Â Yah, how about your dad? Did he say anything?
Yeeun:Â Surprisingly he's fine with me and Hochang. I thought he would be the one who's tougher on the decision, but he's not! He told me not to worry and he said he'd sort it out with mom, but really, who knows what will happen, right?
Yina:Â Jung Yeeun. Are you stupid?
Suddenly, everyone in the room who was either drinking the beer or eating the chicken froze in shock. They couldn't understand why Kang eonni said that.
Eunjae:Â Kang-eonni! Isn't that too much?
Yina:Â Ani, I'm not saying you're stupid. But think about this. Really, isn't your dad's side of the family the one who's obsessed with backgrounds and wealth?Â
Yeeun nodded.
Yina:Â Then, shouldn't your dad be the one to care for whoever deserves to be your boyfriend more than your mom if the argument against your relationship is all about Hochang's background?
Yeeun nodded for the second time that night, and Kang eonni's bluntness woke her up from the concerns she's been having for some time. She knew mom felt like she's the number one most responsible person for the way the takes care of her, but she didn't manage to realize that her dad is equally responsible too. No matter how 'bossy' Yeeun's mom is, she'd almost always agree with what dad goes with in the end.
Kang eonni lets go of a sigh and said,
Yina:Â Yeeun-ah, don't worry. As Yoon sunbae said earlier, we'll always be here for you if you need a back-up. Whatever it is. But before that, I want you to be a little braver and for once speak up for what you believe in.
Yeeun:Â Arasseo. Gomawo. I'm serious.
Yeeun's eyes were teary from Kang-eonni's words, and all the sudden, the girls started to sympathize with the situation and went for a group hug. Without realizing, they've been hugging for quite a while now.
Yeeun:Â Ya! Let go... I can't breathe!
The situation lightened up after Yeeun's cute exclamation, with her voice half choking up.
Suddenly, Eun's phone rang. Everyone's attention was diverted to her. Eun looked at her phone screen, and it says, 'Janghoon'.
Jiwon:Â Who is it?
Without saying out loud who's calling her, everyone knew already, as Eun was smiling so wide. Eun asked,
Eun:Â Can I go inside my room and answer the call?
Everyone:Â GO!!
Eun quickly got up from her sitting position and swiped the answer button as she went inside her room. Jiwon commented,
Jiwon:Â Yaah, today must be so special for Eun, huh... Hmph... what to do... Sungmin hasn't even gone for the army yet
Jinmyung:Â Jinjja? How old is he this year?
Jiwon:Â He's turning 25 at the end of the month. I don't know, I heard the summon letter can arrive at any time. He said he's exempted from the army because of a past injury, but I really haven't checked with him if that's true
Jinmyung:Â He still has time, though... but it's really better to complete that earlier. Jaehwan did it as soon as he turned 20, so he's free for the rest of his life after the two-year service
Eunjae:Â Aah... eottokhae... Chungwon hasn't gone too
Yeeun:Â Ya! What about me??? Hochang too! You're seriously making me worried
Hearing everyone talking about the army, Kang-eonni snapped,
Yina:Â Ah, what's with the talk? Let's continue. So who wants to tell the next story?
Everyone looked at Kang-eonni and answered,
Everyone:Â You.
Yina:Â Aish, you guys really know how to make use of a momentum.
The girls laughed cheerfully. It's fun to sometimes make fun of Kang-eonni, who's almost always very blunt and serious about things.
Meanwhile at Eun's room...
The atmosphere looks sweet, Eun is smiling as she lies on her bed. It's been a while since Janghoon called, and Eun was thrilled for the occasion.
Eun:Â Mwoyaaa, I didn't expect your call at night like this
Janghoon:Â Why? You don't want me to call you?
Eun:Â Aniyaaa! Why are you like that? I'm too happy, that's why~ Is everything alright?
Janghoon:Â Hm...
Eun:Â Hm? Did something happen?
Janghoon:Â Ani.
Eun:Â What? I know something happened. Tell me, you don't have much time to talk through the phone, right? Please tell me before the time ends.
Janghoon:Â I just... miss you.
Suddenly, Eun couldn't say a word. It's really been a while since she last saw Janghoon. There's still about 300 days before his discharge. Eun has been marking her calendar off day by day as a countdown.
Janghoon:Â Can't you come visit?
Eun:Â Visit? Do your inmates' girlfriends do it too?
Janghoon:Â Hm... can you do that for me?
Eun feels bad that all these time, she didn't have the initiative to visit Janghoon at the army base when it's actually allowed as long as she follows process.Â
Eun:Â of course, I will
Janghoon:Â Arasseo, I'll wait okay?
Eun:Â Eung
The call was full of longing from both Eun and Janghoon, and Janghoon just couldn't wait to meet Eun after a long time.
Janghoon:Â What were you doing before this?
Eun:Â The girls were gathering at the share house, you know, it's sort of our ritual
Janghoon:Â Ah jinjja? Did I interrupt you guys?
Eun:Â Anii, haha they understood. You know, they always know how much I miss you
Hearing Eun's words, Janghoon's heart plunged for a second. He knew long-distance relationship wouldn't be easy, but maybe all these while he had only thought about himself and not so much about Eun. Suddenly, a voice echoed from the background "Sargeant Kim Janghoon, your time has ended."
Eun:Â Hoon-ah, you have to go back right?
Janghoon was still zoning out and didn't even hear the announcement that his calling time has ended. Eun's voice woke him up.
Janghoon:Â Eo?
Eun:Â Your time is up
Janghoon:Â E..Eo, okay then talk to you later
Eun:Â Arasseo, till then! Love you
Janghoon:Â Me too, have fun with the girls and goodnight!
The phone line ended as Janghoon wished her goodnight. He honestly couldn't wait for Eun to visit her at the base. After the phone call, Eun joined back with the girls at the living room. Eun was startled because she couldn't see Kang-eonni. She joined back with the girls and asked,
Eun:Â Where's Kang-eonni?
Everyone looked at Eun and showed a sign that an interesting event that happened during her phone call with Janghoon.
Eunjae:Â Eun-ah, you missed something big.
Eun:Â Something big? What? Did something happen to Kang-eonni? Is she okay?
The girls looked at each other, confused of where to start.
Jiwon:Â hm... how should we start?
Jiwon:Â So, you see, we know Kang-eonni had started her part time job at the designer boutique store right?
Eun nodded her head as a sign of agreement.
Jiwon:Â Apparently an old pervert harassed her and you know, Kang-eonni being herself, of course she fought back verbally. Long story short, Kang Dongjoo-
Jiwon stopped talking for a while and realized that Eun hasn't been introduced to Dongjoo yet. So she figured she had to explain his background first.
Jiwon:Â When Kang-eonni was still in the 'dark' industry, you know, well, Dongjoo was her comrade. They knew each other really well and if anything happened, they would help each other out no matter how complicated the issue might be.
Eun:Â Right... so what exactly happened?
Jiwon:Â So... while Kang-eonni had stopped earning money from that industry, Dongjoo is still doing it and you know what? Dongjoo happened to visit the store with his client and saw what happened at the store. What's more surprising is that the old pervert is the lady's husband.
Eun:Â Ani, this is so like a drama. So, is Kang-eonni okay now?
Jiwon:Â Do you want to hear the good news or the bad news first?
Eun thought for a while before answering.
Eun:Â The bad news first.
Jiwon:Â Okay, well... you might have been able to guess it. She lost her job at the boutique, because the commotion did cause her a negative outcome at the end...
Eun:Â Gosh...
Everyone's expression turned worried as they became aware of Kang eonni's situation now that she lost her ideal internship.Â
Yeeun:Â So, what is she gonna do now?
Jiwon:Â Well, I don't know. I guess we have to wait till Kang eonni gets back in here.
Yeeun:Â Is she even gonna go back? You know, I sense something between her and Dongjoo
Seconds after Yeeun said that, everyone's phone vibrated at the same time. A message from Kang Yina appeared on Belle Epoque girls' kakaotalk group.
Kang Yina: Girls, especially Eun, sorry for not being able to stay with you guys until the end. I got caught up with some stuff. Let's continue the girls talk tomorrow if that's okay.
All the girls read Kang Yina's message and looked at each other
Eun: Is everyone okay with tomorrow?
Without hesitating, everyone nodded while at the same time curious of what Yina has in store to update. Next in line to tell their story is Eun who just finished her call with Janghoon.
Jiwon: So, Eun-ah it's your turn now. How's Janghoonie?
Eun's cheeks suddenly turned red from Jiwon's question. It's obvious that something is up. She let's go of a sigh to begin her story telling.
Eun: Hm... where should I start? Well Janghoon is doing well in the army, and as you all know, he's been calling me whenever he can from the base, and though it's not a daily routine, I feel like it becomes even more special everytime we have a chance to talk to each other. You see, everyone is so easily connected nowadays, we have kakaotalk, insta, calls at a tap of a button, but with the rather old-fashioned and limited calls Janghoon can make each week, it feels like our relationship is taken back to the early 2000s and it's honestly quite romantic in a way.Â
Jiwon: Well, I agree. Sometimes the more dependent we are on having our boyfriends to call us or text us every hour to constantly update us with what they do can seem annoying or even obsessive sometimes. How many months left until Janghoon's discharge?
Eun: Right. If my countdown is right, he has 96 days left. You see, I cross out each day until his discharge so that I can prepare myself for the best once he completes his service. Eonni-deul, to be honest, it's really difficult to have a long-distance relationship with Janghoon. What should I do?
Jinmyung: It's quite difficult to answer that, because you know your own feeling best. But I think you should just trust him as much as he trusts you. How do you think you'd feel when you're in his position and what do you think he wishes you to do? I think the dieties are testing your faithfulness here, how you can endure the highs and lows.
Yoon sunbae is right, in a relationship, it's not just about how you feel, but it's also about how they feel. Often times, we need to put ourselves in their shoes in order to fully understand what's best to keep the momentum going. As expected, age and experience tells.
Eun: Sunbae, if you didn't tell me that, I would've only thought about myself. I think Janghoon is enduring much harder emotional burden that I am, and really if I try to be in his position, I think I only want my partner to trust me and give me the highest motivation.Â
With that short window of story-telling, Eun ended her session and now passes the opportunity for Yoon sunbae to share her story. They all know Yoon sunbae is in a long distance relationship too, but they don't know yet about her encounter with her high school crush.
Eun: So, shall we pass the next turn to Yoon sunbae?
Yoon sunbae looked as if she had a lot to say at this opportunity and time. Her eyes, her expression, and her overall attitude at the gathering show it all.
Jinmyung: Where should I start?
Her opening statement shocks everyone in the room, because she rarely shares things, she even kept her broken nail a secret in the past. It must've been so painful, but she endured it all herself. Maybe this time, she can't handle whatever she's facing.
Yeeun: Yoon sunbae, pour it all out. We want to know your story. Right, guys?
At a split of a second, everyone nods, a yes to Yeeun's remark.
Jinmyung: Seriously, guys. It's been complicated. Some things are shocking, and some things are complicated. So, there is this guy. He's a dance instructor at the company.
Yeeun: Okay, a dance instructor. What about it?
Jinmyung: He was my first love.
Everyone was startled at Yoon sunbae's words. First love.
Jiwon: FIRST LOVE?!
Yoon sunbae nodded.
JIwon: And he suddenly appears. I mean you meet him at the work place? Out of all place?
Jinmyung: Yes, that's exactly what happened.
Jiwon: Daebak. I can't believe this. So what happened?
Jinmyung: I was confused at first, I had a doubt that it was him, but hhe looked exactly the same as he used to be in high school and there's no way it wasn't him. His smile, his moves, it was all him. I just didn't bother asking until he approached me at the lobby seconds before I went out through the exit door.
Yoon sunbae paused her story and took a sip of the cold beer that's sitting nicely in front of her before continuing her story.
Jinmyung: This is where it got complicated.
Jiwon: Don't worry, we love complicated things here.
Eunjae: Jiwon sunbae!
Eunjae signaled Jiwon to stop making interlude comments
Jinmyung: It was really him. We exchanged greetings, we had small talks and after that he asked me out for a dinner. I really liked him when we were in high school, but now that I have a boyfriend â Jaehwan. I'm taking my relationship really seriously with him, and there's no way I could let any space in my heart available for someone I've long forgotten. We had a really long talk over food and drinks a few nights ago, and he told me his side of the story. This is where it gets complicated, and it's making me crazy.
The four girls surrounding her are so into Yoon sunbae's story that they stay silent. Jiwon who made comments at every moment possible didn't even move her gaze a bit from Yoon sunbae.
Jinmyung:Â He said â he said he liked me too back when we were in high school, and he confessed to me after telling me old stories from high school. He remembered every little detail that I don't even remember.Â
Yoon sunbae again paused her words to take some time to organize her story.
Yeeun: Did you tell your first love-
Jinmyung: His name is Jihun
Yeeun: Okay, did you tell Jihun that you're actually in a long distance relationship with Jaehwan oppa?
Jinmyung: That's what I told him next. And this is what I'm gonna tell you guys too. Please don't be too shocked, alright?
Yoon sunbae continued
Jinmyung: Jaehwan-ssi is going to move to Seoul mid-year, he's opening a restaurant he's been dreaming of making, and it's finally coming to a realization. I told Jihun just until this part of the story, and he's willing to move on from me.
Jiwon: There's more you haven't told him?
Jinmyung: There's more, but I think it's best for me not to tell him. For his sake too. I'm trying my best to respect his feelings. Jaehwan and I are planning to get married.
Jiwon couldn't stay in her seat and jumps off
Jiwon: MARRIED?! What?! Yoon sunbae are you being real?
Jinmyung: I'm serious. We've talked about this several times, but first he needs to settle down in Seoul and of course visit my mom, and perhaps a session to get to know you guys much better?
Eun: Yoon sunbae!
Jinmyung: What?
Eun: You're such a cool person.
Eunjae: I agree.
Jiwon: Me too.
Yeeun: You are.
Jinmyung: Thanks, girls. Do you understand why I said it's complicated? To be honest I don't have any more feelings left for Jihun, but somehow my mind wavered, maybe because I've missed Jaehwan too much already. We've only been calling and texting each other for a while now. Jaehwan is busy managing his restaurant in Busan, and I'm busy at work now that a new girl group is preparing for debut. And suddenly, my first love. Literally my first love, not just a mere crush, showed up at the company, and he gave me all the attention while Jaehwan wasn't next to me. Thankfully I realized my heart is only for Jaehwan... Eun-ah.
Eun looked at Yoon sunbae as her name was called.
Jinmyung: Do you understand what I said about trust now? Can you imagine how sad and disappointed Jaehwan would be if I actually decided to give Jihun a chance?Â
Eun nodded as she agreed with Yoon sunbae's words.
Jinmyung: I know it's not gonna be easy, but I'm gonna tell Jaehwan about this once the time is right. I just don't want to keep things secret from him.
Yeeun: That's the right move, sunbae. It must've been so hard and confusing for you.Â
Yoon sunbae smiled as the burden that's been on her shoulders are lifted. It must've been bothering her so much. Sometimes you need to let out your worries to people you trust no matter how personal it might be, because you'll never know if a positive outcome might follow.
The clock reads 11.25 and the five girls are ready to go back to their rooms to end the day. As the girls take their sleeping positions, Jiwon laid her eyes open and murmured,
Jiwon:Â Marriage? Yoon-sunbae is getting married?
Jiwon shook her head as she brushed her thoughts about marriage, "marriage? What marriage? It's nonsense! I'm still young, I don't wanna think about having a child yet." Despite trying to not let her mind occupied by the thought of marriage, Jiwon's memories keep directing her to that moment when Sungmin caught the flower bouquet at her friend's wedding plus accidentally meeting Sungmin's parents 'What sign could this be?' Jiwon asked herself and shut her eyes soon after, not wanting to drag the thought any longer.
Meanwhile Kang Yina met Dongjoo after the call...Â
Yina:Â Dongjoo-ya, why did you call me this late at night?
Dongjoo:Â I have something I should tell you
Yina:Â Is it serious?
Dongoo couldn't answer Kang Yina's question because it is serious, but he doesn't wanna make her worried or anxious about it.
Yina:Â I asked you, is it serious?
Dongjoo:Â Kang Yina.
Yina:Â What is this? Why are you being all serious about it?Â
Dongjoo:Â Whatever I'm going to say, please don't be mad at me. Okay?
Kang Yina doesn't know what Dongjoo was trying to say by that, but she nodded anyway.
Dongjoo:Â Kang Yina. I like you.
Kang Yina froze on the spot, not knowing what to react to Dongjoo's sudden confession to her. Dongjoo? Her forever friend? Liking her? It was never on Yina's mind.
Dongjoo:Â I know this is very sudden, and you're not prepared, but I have to tell you this sooner or later, I can't let myself hold this for any longer, because I don't wanna put our friendship awkward. You don't have to give any answer to me if you want to, or you can give me an answer, and whatever it is, I'm ready to accept.
Yina:Â Dongjoo-ya... I don't want to disappoint you or anything... but I don't know what to say. Don't misinterpret this. I really don't hate you, no, I like you. I mean, I like you but as a friend. I don't know if I can see you as more than friend just yet. I'm sorry...
Dongjoo:Â Aniya, it's okay. I understand that, you don't even have to apologize. I brought this up, so I should be the one who takes responsibility over it.
Honestly, Dongjoo wasn't expecting Yina to answer him that fast. He thought Yina needed more time to think about how to answer his confession, but it's the exact opposite and he now feels guilty.
Yina:Â But we can still be friends, right?
Dongjoo:Â Of course, nothing changes anything. I'll always be there for you when you need help, and you'll always be there for me when I need help. Pretend I didn't say anything. Okay?
Yina nodded in acceptance of Dongjoo's answer.Â
That night, Dongjoo took Yina home to her rented apartment. The journey was silent throughout, as If there was tense going on between them. Yina shook her head at the thought that her friendship with Dongjoo would experience a turn just because he confessed. That's right. Dongjoo's confession won't change anything. Or will it?
Dongjoo's stepped on the brake as soon as his car approached the entrance lobby of her apartment. He changed the gear stick to neutral before he looked to his right, where Yina is sitting to say something. Before he could utter something out of his mouth, though, Yina said,
Yina:Â Thank you for taking me home. Goodnight.
Dongjoo:Â E... Eo, goodnight.
Yina opened the door and stepped out of the red sedan. She didn't even try to look back or give Dongjoo a friendly wave of goodbye like she usually did. She looked straight in front of her and quickly pulled the glass door of the entrance.
Dongjoo waited patiently as he made sure Yina had securely close the front door, just to make sure. He left the premise as soon as the door closed and Yina disappeared from his sight walking right inside the high-rise building.
Yina closed the door behind her hurriedly, and quickly made her way to the elevator and press the up button. The elevator door opened. She stepped inside, pressed number '12' and laid her back on the elevator wall. She touched her heart that was racing as fast as a formula1 car. She thought to herself, 'what's wrong with me?' but she didn't know the answer.Â
The night went as fast as a bullet that day. A lot of things happened so suddenly without notice. Yina knew she rejected Dongjoo not because she didn't like him back. She liked him back, but she couldn't accept his confession because she was more afraid of losing him if their relationship doesn't work out.
The elevator stopped as the monitor showed number '12'. She got off the elevator and walked slowly towards her apartment door. She pressed a few digits to unlock her door and stepped inside the dark room of hers she left all day.
She slid her back on the apartment door, curling her body as tears trickled down her face...
