Clint, Thor, and Bruce all have chairs at the dining table in the Compound after Age of Ultron. No one sits in them. No one touches them. They are just there for when they return.

One Saturday evening Clint finally makes it for weekly dinner night, and does notice everyone not touch the chair that has “Legolas” taped on it. but he chalks it up to everyone being sentimental and they’ve always had unspoken assigned seats since the tower. But then he sits down and realizes how big of a mistake it was because Nat and Tony have been waiting for this exact moment for months

Tony and Clint had a little friends with benefits thing going on during the Hydra Base Runs period prior to Age of Ultron, and one of the ground rules Tony set was that they call it off if either of them had something more serious. So when Clint reveals his adorable farm family, Tony cycles through denial, salt and avoidance before shoving the whole thing out of his mind to deal with Ultron.

Afterwards of course, he goes back to anger because damn it, Barton, you could have used any number of excuses to drop our thing when you knew I wouldn’t have accepted this and instead you lied to me, what the hell? And they have a huge screaming blow up with all number of regrettable accusations, leading to cutting all ties once neither is full time with the Avengers.

And that’s why Hawkeye was an OOC raging asshole in Civil War.

I know they obviously didn't think about it like ever but Clint being so weirdly defensive and aggressive about his place on the team and taking it really personally whenever that's challenged does actually make a lot of sense when you consider the following:

He was constantly moved from one foster to another as a child. We don't know how many homes he had before the Circus picked him up but it was enough for him to, on page, ask Barney "how long they'd be staying for this time." And then the Circus was also constantly moving around. He never got to experience stability during his most formative years and that fucks with you a lot throughout your life

He has no formal education and no resumé to speak of. This would make it extremely difficult for him to get a job a fact he is no doubt very aware of. He's worked three jobs (four if we count the odd stuff for SHIELD) in his life and they were a circus, the Avengers and then a security job at a tech company that was secretly doing very bad shit and turned out to just be using him anyway

He is deaf. Deaf people, statistically speaking, are far less likely to find employment than the general population and face a lot of ableism in their day-to-day life. In the UK alone a survey back in 2018 reported that around 65% of deaf employees felt isolated at their workplace because of their hearing loss among a list of other experiences. Clint, being the only publically deaf superhero on the team, would feel this too. It would feel pointed. It would feel unfair and very targeted

The times in which the government themselves (Gyrich especially) have stepped in to kick him from the team reads as a lot more malicious with that added context underlying the choices. Again I'm aware this is not something the writers have ever actually thought about but it adds an interesting layer to explore regardless. This is the joy of fandom :] it's free real estate to really dig into the meat of these things and make a feast for ourselves
